Guarding His Midnight Witness is very much an intrigue and mystery-esque-like story and the author does an amazing job of twisting and turning events; it kept my interest so well that I forgot to go to sleep. I read it straight thru.
I could just picture Jack McTavish asking himself: Do nice guys ALWAYS finish last??? Okay, okay, so he has made some “poor” decisions in his life AND he’s recovering from being shot on the job but still… Does he have to feel like a dead man walking?
We met Jack in a previous book in the series – no worries, GHMW is a standalone – and I have been curious about his character ever since. I won’t give any spoilers and I can’t even begin to tell you the storyline but here’s a bit about this book that I loved: Jack McTavish is just back at work after being shot, as I said above. The bullet just missed his heart, he flatlines twice, even once in recovery. He’s not sleeping, probably has PTSD…all the great bells and whistles! As a detective, Jack gets sent to check out a call with a young (twenty-something) deputy named Bowie. If you have ever watched a Hitchcock movie, the same type of hold-your-breath story comes into play with this call. Greta Renault is an extremely talented artist but when Jack and Bowie show up to check out her story, something just isn’t right about it. Bowie thinks she’s “kooky” but Jack thinks…he doesn’t know what to think. All he knows is that meeting her is going to shake up his life – and he’s not sure if it will be a good thing or a bad thing.
Jack and Greta get to know each other during the investigation of that first call, and it was at times chilling, surprising, and even hilarious. Most of all, it was loving and genuine (with Jack and Greta); both of them are conducting a dance where they don’t quite know the rules but are dancing anyway. The attraction is fast and deep – they are made for one another. There are many twists before the ending that I never saw coming. Great read, great characters, great ride! Highly recommend this book and the series.
I have loved each book in this series but Jack and Greta were amazing. Jack is back from a gun shot wound. His first case is a women’s call to the department about seeing a murder. He doesn’t know wether it’s true or not.
He will keep an open mind.
Greta is an artist, and now has to make Jack trust her. Make him believe she’s telling the truth.
This book had me turning the pages, and holding my breathe. So good…buy to see what else happens..
I loved the nod to Hitchcock Rear Window especially as this held the suspense just like it, you know Greta appears flighty but she also has this determined quality to her and like Jack you know she believes she saw something. I felt torn about what she saw but the further in you get the more you know something hinkey is going on but what did she really see and also what is she haunted about. There are plenty of twist some which leave you aghast, betrayed, heart broken and elated, then there is the attraction between Greta and Jack … yeah good luck fighting that one! This is definitely a page turner that has you laughing, chewing your lip and needing to know who was murdered, will love win and what really happen to Greta years ago!
Exciting twists and turns will keep you on your toes in the latest from Anna J. Stewart! With book four in her Honor Bound series we get to catch up with Jack McTavish as he gets back into the swing of things and faces a possible murder. I really enjoyed GUARDING HIS MIDNIGHT WITNESS!
Jack is determined to do right by his first case when he gets back to work, but he’s not sure his caller truly saw what she thinks she saw. He sets out to investigate on his own to find out.
Greta seems so sure, but as she shares some of her past, we’re not sure whether to believe her thoughts or not. She’s an easy character to sympathize with.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a mystery with danger mixed in as a couple who has instant spark finds their way closer to each other.
I am such a fan of Anna J. Stewart’s books, and this one was another wonderful treat!
Greta Renault is a very talented artist who is preparing for her first official show of her paintings at the Camellia Art Museum. Greta owned the building where she lived and was the only occupant. She had been working on a piece for her art show when she looked out her window at the Fremont Complex building across the street. What she saw horrified her. A man had just been murdered. She called 911 but when the police arrived Greta questioned if she should have. When the police officer and the detective arrived Greta told them what she saw. Officer Bowman clearly didn’t believe her. Detective Jack McTavish might have believed her. He, at least, came back to follow up. Part of the problem was that the man Greta saw committing the murder is a well-known business man with very influential connections. Yet the handsome detective stuck with her and promised to get to the bottom of things.
Detective Jack McTavish has been off the job for eight months after having been shot and almost dying on his last case. The call to Greta Renault’s apartment was his first case upon returning to duty. There was something about Greta that had Jack taking her story seriously. He was sure the murderer realized the murder had been witnessed by her. Her life was probably in danger. She needed protection for sure and he was the man for the job. Their attraction to each other was strong but Jack knew he had to keep his mind on the case and Greta’s safety, No easy job!
Guarding His Midnight Witness by Anna J. Stewart is the fourth book in her Honor Bound series. This story had plenty of action and suspense. The main characters, Greta and Jack worked well together to gather the evidence to solve the case. Greta insisted on being part of the investigation. She fought the relationship because of her family history. Fortunately Jack
In this 4th book of Anna J. Stewart’s Honor Bound series, we meet Greta Renault, a woman with a secret past. When Greta places a 9-1-1 call claiming to have witnessed a murder, Detective Jack McTavish is the one who responds to the call. Jack’s lieutenant figures this is an easy case for Jack since he just returned to active duty, after near death, just months ago. The claim of a murder, but there isn’t be a body, and a prominent citizen is supposedly the killer – this can’t really be a case to be taken seriously, can it? Jack decides to pursue this, but has to do so on the QT so that the reputation of those involved isn’t destroyed if this really is just Greta’s mind playing tricks on her. Soon Jack involves Vince, Simone, Allie, Raven and others that we’ve met in the previous Honor Bound books.
As Stewart throws twists and turns into this story, even right up to the end, it will keep you turning pages just to see what will happen next. Is Greta crazy? What’s her secret past? Will Jack solve this alleged murder case? Can you, the reader, survive the suspense???
I loved this story and can’t wait until we find out who the next story will involve.
Guarding His Midnight Witness is another great addition to the Honor Bound series! Greta’s character was interesting, and the mystery surrounding her kept me wondering what would become of her case. I loved Jack and Greta’s story from beginning to end, especially the epilogue.
Returning to your job as a detective after months of rehabilitation for an almost fatal gunshot wound to the chest, Detective Jack McTavish wants to let everyone know he’s back and ready to get back to business. His only problem is the rookie he’s been partnered with, Bowie, and the first call they pull. An artist, Greta Renault, who thinks she’s seen a murder.
Following up on the 9-1-1 call, Jack’s gut tells him she’s absolutely seen something, but when no body is forthcoming, Bowie wants to close the case as unfounded and note that the RP is crazy! Jack has other ideas.
What do you do as an artist when people think you’re not all there? How can you get them to believe what you know you saw? As Jack and Greta get to know each other more intimately, he realizes that someone is setting Greta up for a fall. As the pace of the story begins moving at lightning speed, Jack and Greta realize they must rely on themselves, but when a Greta’s attorney betrays her, is it too late?
I loved this book. Lots of twists and turns, and OMG, the epilogue…What a revelation!! Don’t peek though…the book is worth a full read!
While I’m a huge fan of all of Anna J Stewart’s books, my very favorite ones are her romantic suspense stories. While not technically marketed as part of the Honor Bound series, many of us readers who devoured those books have been dying, and patiently waited (sort of!) for Jack’s story. That patience has been rewarded.
Greta is a very interesting character who I took to right away, but some might feel the same as Jack’s temporary partner, Bowie, felt upon meeting her. She’s definitely eccentric…almost flighty in a way that artistic characters are often portrayed. But Greta’s life is filled with secrets, trauma and self doubt that affect all areas of her life. Her backstory is fascinating as well as heartbreaking, but I felt more inspired by her than I felt pity for her.
Greta and Jack had that electric chemistry straight out of the gate. To me, that’s something more powerful than love at first sight. You don’t need to necessarily be looking for love to make that connection with someone.
With its nod to my favorite Hitchcock movie, Guarding His Midnight Witness is a book I know I will both recommend and remember for its engaging characters, twisting plot line and wonderful storytelling.
I loved the idea of an offbeat heroine! When our hero, Jack McTavish is called in to checkout a mysterious 911 call, he interviews the witness and Greta says she “thinks” she saw a murder but her train of thought is constantly diverted and she is always leaving the room or loosing her train of thought so Jack and his partner (who thinks she’s kooky), almost write it off to a psychotic loony! But, Jack’s gut has never steered him wrong and although he’s just coming off rehab from a gunshot wound, he decides to follow through on this case without a shred of evidence! Greta knows there is something different about Jack than other people she’s met but with her “dark” background, she can’t get close to him. However, she has to make him believe that she really did see a murder! So many interesting things to love about this book and I especially loved that characters from former books in the series came back! Such an enjoyable story to read! Greta is indeed a different heroine but that’s what made it interesting!
Anna J Stewart turns in an enjoyable romantic suspense for Harlequin Romantic Sspense in Guarding His Midnight Witness. It’s a terrific mystery and suspense.
Detective Jack McTavish is called to a routine 911 emergency call on his first night back at work after 8 months recuperating from getting shot to the chest and nearly dying. The reclusive, eccentric Greta Renault is an artist, a painter and somewhat of a recluse, who has witnessed a muder. Or has she? The plot is an entertaining mash-up of the classic films Gaslight and Rear Window and it grabbed me right from the start. Sparks fly between Jack & Greta as both sense something complementary in the other. Jack is a good guy who wants to make a good impression with his first job after rehab. For a while it looks like he’s the only one who believes that Greta saw someone get murdered. But he really sticks his neck out when the murderer turns out to be a wealthy businessman who has so far kept a squeaky clean image.
Greta is attracted to Jack but because she harbors a secret fear, feels they have no future together. Can Jack convince her otherwise? Can we get enough support to stop the bad guy before he executes his plan and silences Greta?
Anna J Stewart is a new author for me. But I’m going to look up some of her back titles and read more about some of the fascinating characters that make cameo appearances in this book. Jack has an interesting group of friends.

Really enjoyed this book. Kept me interested from start to finish. Could not stop till I was done. That’s the kind of book I like one that keeps you involved. Makes you feel like you just can’t put it down.
Greta is an artist who thinks she witnessed a murder in a building across from her apt building. But because of her past history she isn’t sure if she actually saw someone being murdered. She calls the police but because she is a little eccentric or Kooky as the one Officer called her, she isn’t sure they believe her.
This is one of those books that you can tell too much on and give too much away so let me just tell you this I wouldn’t want you to miss out on such an awesome book as this so I think you need to try it.
