A dense black cloud boiled up in the southeastern sky. It rose high and fast, like a time-lapse movie of the birth of a thunderhead. But it was no rain cloud. Wholly black, it reached up and loomed over her, blocking out the sun. Somehow she knew it was Death coming at her.
Pre-med student Coral is on a vacation in Idaho when something terrible happens. The black cloud is followed by a wildfire … is followed by a wildfire and searing heat that lasts for days. She survives deep in a cave but emerges days later to find the world transformed, a world of blackened trees, an ash-filled sky, and no living creatures except her.
So begins her desperate journey: to find water, and food, and other survivors…and the answer to the mystery of what happened.

One of my favorite post-apocalyptic books/series. It’s so realistic and scary, but lots of interesting information on survival if–God-forbid–we’re ever faced with that type of scenario.
I was bored reading this book, the first installment of the Gray series. I went into this excited to learn what caused The Event, as Coral calls it. I got 150 pages of survivor with constant knowing starvation. If I wasn’t so close to the end, finishing this book, I wouldn’t have. I’d move on to something else on my TBR list. I hope others liked & got more from it than I did.
I truly enjoyed this book.
It was something I could see happening.
Loved this series. Great character development. This was an original story line that really got me to thinking, what if?
Not bad. Characters weren’t very endearing
I really liked this series. Some of it was a bit repetitive in that they were always looking for food (as that is what one would do when trying to survive), but overall the pace moved well and it was an enjoyable read. All three books really need to be read to get the full effect
well written you felt like you were there in the book with her, couldn’t wait to read the next book in the series
I want next two books, but will not pay $10 for an e-read
Great story! Strong characters!! Already read the second in the series and starting on the third. I already know I won’t want it to end!
A fairly decent book, but too short! I don’t like it when authors write a short book then expect you to buy all the sequels when they could have made it into one book! I don’t have the $ to spend.
Our world after – something – causing everything to be filled with ash. One woman and one man try to find civilization.
It was easy to get lost in this world. Even though it was three volumes, I was wishing for a fourth by the time I finished.
Similar to most post apocalypse fiction in the expected results of a catastrophic event, but the female lead character is different from most of the genre. I also like the fact that the character is successful because of her ability to think things through and not v=because of a military or prepper background.
This book (I read the series) was a real page turner. Aside from the infrequent editing errors, it was a thought provoking and entertaining read if you want to escape!
This offering introduced me to a now-favorite author. Have read most of his books, working on the rest.
I really liked it but wish it could have been one longer book instead of cut into three shorter ones.
Loved this book. I would have given it 5 stars if there weren’t so many grammatical errors. A good book is one that I cannot put down and that was the case with Gray. I plan to look into other works by this author.
Very creative story plot. I’m reading the second book.
A original end of the world type of story.
