Thomas Prescott returns in a smoldering thriller of murder, treachery, and revenge.
His love life in shambles, retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott returns to Seattle, the very place he fled from after his parents’ deaths nearly a decade earlier. Just as Prescott is getting settled in, he sees a body … settled in, he sees a body floating in the private cove behind his boyhood home. It’s a woman. But not just any woman. It’s Ellen Gray—the governor of Washington—who has been missing for the past six weeks.
The lead suspect in the governor’s murder is her husband, famed defense attorney, Adam Gray. But unlike the Seattle Police Department—where Thomas was fired from several years earlier—Prescott has his doubts about Adam’s guilt. Ignoring direct orders to stay away from the case, Prescott soon finds himself drawn into the heart of the investigation.
Working side-by-side with SPD detective, Erica Frost, Prescott uncovers a sophisticated conspiracy linked to a new breed of killer. In his pursuit to catch a madman, Prescott’s investigation will take him from the state capital to the snow-covered peaks of the North Cascades and for the first time in his career, Thomas finds himself both the hunter…and the hunted.
The books in The Thomas Prescott Series can be enjoyed in any order, so grab Gray Matter and get started today.

Not the first I’ve read by Pirog, but so far the best! I just finished Gray Matter, bought the box set with books 1-4 and came straight to review.
Thomas Prescott returns to Seattle for respite only to find the body of a missing governor. While ordered to stay away from the case by the very police department that fired him years before, it’s not …
My first introduction to Nick Pirog’s detective Thomas Prescott and his sister Lucy with her narcoleptic pug dog Baxter. The search for a serial killer who are targeting women in Main, always takes a dire, but often funny turn where Baxter sleeps his way into the case, imperiling Tom, and those he loves. Sarcastic and fascinating, I had to start …
Nick Pirog’s books are always a joy to read. The protagonist here, Prescott, doesn’t take himself too seriously, and the back & forth between him and his sister is realistic sibling banter. He also treats his animal characters with respect, which I greatly appreciate. My only complaint is that the text has a LOT of typos. Normally when that’s the …
I really enjoyed the dialogue of the main character and his wit and strength and courage.
I found the first of this series on Book Bub. Before I finished I had added all of Nick Pirog’s books to my Kindle. Great humor mixed with horrible murders. Recommending it to all my reading friends.
Really enjoy the way he writes.
I really enjoyed this book! The characters were well developed, each with their own flaws and assets. I have never laughed so hard while reading a gruesome mystery. The murders were indeed ugly and the suspect list unusual. There were twists and turns right up to the last page! Loved it!
I started out enjoying this book, but it is set in the Seattle area, where I live – usually a plus for me. However, it appears that no research went into this writing, and a simple search would have shown that the geography (river sources, national parks, etc.) were misrepresented. That soured me on the rest of the book so I quit reading it.
This book is entertaining. The main character is a hoot. Funny one-liners on every page.
Oh my word. How I can laugh during a murder mystery is beyond me, but I actually cackled several times from this book. I also bookmarked several pages that just tickle my ribs. That being said, good plot, a page turner as you can only expect from Nick Pirog.
I love reading Nick Pirog’s books. They are especially “witty” and wonderful mysteries.
Great book by one of my favorite authors. LOVE all of his books!!
Love all Nick Pirog books and characters.
Love, love, love all Pirog books. He has a hilarious style of writing!
Finished it in 2 days. Another good read by this author.
The protagonist in this has some past tragedies to deal with and decides to go home to the house he inherited from his parents several years before. It is a police detective novel, in a way, but difficult to describe without giving too much away. The story haunted me until I had to finish it. Everything came together in the end although I did …
I really enjoy the Thomas Prescott series. It is murder mystery at its best with humor mixed in. I have already started the next one.
This was a fun and entertaining read. Kept me guessing. A good Who dunit book.
Not your ordnary thriller! Fascinating twists and interesting information on unusual topics. Excellent!
Here is another character that I have fallen in love with.
Thomas is having a real bad time goes back to his home town and things do not exactly get better.
I could not put this book down.
