Thomas Prescott returns in a smoldering thriller of murder, treachery, and revenge.
His love life in shambles, retired homicide detective Thomas Prescott returns to Seattle, the very place he fled from after his parents’ deaths nearly a decade earlier. Just as Prescott is getting settled in, he sees a body … settled in, he sees a body floating in the private cove behind his boyhood home. It’s a woman. But not just any woman. It’s Ellen Gray—the governor of Washington—who has been missing for the past six weeks.
The lead suspect in the governor’s murder is her husband, famed defense attorney, Adam Gray. But unlike the Seattle Police Department—where Thomas was fired from several years earlier—Prescott has his doubts about Adam’s guilt. Ignoring direct orders to stay away from the case, Prescott soon finds himself drawn into the heart of the investigation.
Working side-by-side with SPD detective, Erica Frost, Prescott uncovers a sophisticated conspiracy linked to a new breed of killer. In his pursuit to catch a madman, Prescott’s investigation will take him from the state capital to the snow-covered peaks of the North Cascades and for the first time in his career, Thomas finds himself both the hunter…and the hunted.

When the lead character Thomas opened his mouth to speak, I thought to myself…a wiseguy…..yuck. But this ex-cop has much more to him than sarcasm…a non hero, determined, moral, and very stubborn. Thomas becomes involved in the mystery of Ellen Gray, the dead governor of Washington. The death perplexed him, a puzzle, and the fact Erica is a …
The writer (and as a result the main character) has a dark sense of humor that I share and enjoyed while reading.
You won´t be talking about the depths and knowledge you gained from this book, but you will have several ours of entertainment reading it.
Any book by Nick Pirog involving Thomas Prescott is a great read. There is always a few chuckle points in each book, but they are mostly due to the main character’s (Thomas) personality.
This book started out so depressing that I almost quit after the first chapter. I’m glad I kept reading because the story soon captured my attention and kept it all the way to the surprise ending. Great main character with such a different personality that I laughed at his remarks all the way through the book.
Thomas Prescott is witty and sarcastic, and uniquely Nick Pirog…I will definitely be reading more!
This is the best in the series. A convincing story. Good characters. Mister Pirog writes with ups and downs. When he tries too hard to be funny, he is sometimes like a drunk uncle at a party. You just barely tolerate him. But I must say, he restrained himself, in this book.
Excellent murder mystery. Great characters.
The first the book that I’ve read by this author but not the last. Loved the writing, the humor (sarcasm), and the twist in the plot. Highly recommend.
This is a well written book that utilizes so many witty cliches and turns of phrases that give our main character a big personality that bursts off the pages. The Murder mystery has the twists (without the overused trope of misdirection) that keeps you guessing. I really enjoyed this mystery for all the right reasons. The tension is palpable at …
Enjoyed this book. Some was very funny. Probably should rate as 4 stars as several parts were unrealistic. Cars not driven in 8 years will not start, especially a Range Rover, as the batteries will long be dead. Eating old food not realistic either. Interrogating any lawyer without showing identification is a little preposterous. There are …
A good read but not one to remember.
Was leery due to some negative reviews, but I found it an excellent read!
Agree that the lead character is not exactly a ‘beloved character’; quite the contrary, but through all his many faults, he does have some redeeming values. A page-turner to be sure, with plenty of twists & turns. Recommend!
This book is about a retired detective who finds a body on the beach near a house he is trying to get ready to sell. It turns out the body belongs to the Governor and it sets off a political firestorm. Her husband is the main suspect because of his questionable alibi. It turns out one of his clients killed her.
Thomas could have been a little less of a smart mouth and I still would have enjoyed it as much.
A great story which ticked many boxes with intrigue and kept me turning pages to the very end.
I never saw this end coming. This was a really good story! I hope you enjoy you enjoy this book because I sure did.
Thomas Prescott is an entertaining hero. Makes you laugh while he is in the middle of investigating murders. Very different story line.
Some doubtful forensics, but an overall interesting read.
Excellent read!
Wow, what a convoluted but satisfying read!
