A fun paranormal with a bit of mystery and a cast of incorrigible supernaturals.
R. J. Blain is my favorite Rom Com and/or paranormal author, so it’s no surprise that I loved this book. Its start in a funeral home seems like it would be depressing, but it’s funny as heck! Anwen’s dialog with Mr. MacGregor is delightful, and things only get better from there. We meet some wonderful new characters, and catch up with some old favorites. [The devil rubbed his hands together. “I’m in a mood tonight, so call me Lucy…”] And of course we have a villain who adds to the expected body count with no regrets from anyone. There are several gems sprinkled around, such as the discussion of agnostic versus atheist versus heathen. And as always there is plenty of snark and sass to go around, plus a heroine who ends up taking no crap from anyone, including archangels or the devil. This book has several mentions of characters and events in Whatever For Hire, so your reading pleasure will be increased if you’ve already read that, but it’s absolutely not needed to enjoy this book. All I can say is, treat yourself and buy this. I rarely re-read books, but this is on a re-read list already!
I didn’t care much for this book. Slow start not funny but I felt I had to finish
Kept my interest till the end. I felt like the characters were almost believable. When I read the last page it left me wanting a sequel.
R J Blain is just one of those authors who makes me laugh out loud. This is Book 14 of the Magical Romantic Comedy series, although it easily stands alone. The heroine Anwen, who works at the local funeral home, can talk to the dead, and has her hands full with uncooperative and mischievous corpses who’d rather cause a ruckus than lie down in their coffins. Thrown in a hotter than hot supernatural of unknown origin who’s been on ice for a few decades?, centuries?, milleniums? (take your pick as it depends on who knows him), and a helping hand from Lucifer (who’s really not a bad guy), a few of his heavenly archangel brothers, and a few other supernaturals, and maybe the world might get saved. Spoiler alert: If you’ve read any of the previous books in the series, you finally understand about the headless angels.
I really enjoyed this book. The humour and snark were the best!
I love Blain’s “magical rom com with a body count” series, I’ve read about half of them and although this isn’t my favorite, it’s still good and I recommend it.
I do like that our main character isn’t perfect, but that she has character, and she stands up for what she believes in. Which isn’t herself, at first. Is it just me, though, or are our MCs getting younger and younger?
Something that was strange: our MC talks about being a smoker in the first chapter (not my favorite vice to read about, admittedly), but she mentions she can rarely afford to smoke. We have one scene with smoking, and then the habit – and any mention of it – are dropped for the rest of the book.
Her honey rock habit got thoroughly discussed, though.
Speaking of thorough – I’m not sure how the devil is getting any of his “real” work done, as much time as he spends doing good deeds, but I love his character, and I love his wife, Darlene. Looking forward to reading her story.
One of her Magical Romantic Comedy (with a body count) series. Lives up to expectations.
This is a great book in R.J. Blain’s best series. I just love these books “with a body count.” Characters include Satan’s wife, a dragon, ghosts, and nightmare parents. I really enjoyed it.
I enjoy reading about supernatural characters, impossible worlds, and strong woman. This was entertaining, quick to read and much better then watching TV. I could see it as a series show because the book had lots of action and humor. I will enjoy reading more of this series.
Anwen had a hard life growing up in her mother and father’s home. She quilts school early as she had no money for college and went to work. She figured if she couldn’t go to college why not? There were days when she came home from school and she was locked out of her house because her parents weren’t home. There was many a night when Anwen had to spend sleepless nights outside where ever she could find a place to lay her head.
Anwen found a job working in a funeral home where the dead talk to her. There are many rules that the dead or ghost have to abide by. If the ghost breaks any of her boss’s rules then Anwen will not be paid. So it is Anwen’s job to keep the ghost quiet which can be a nightmare to do at times and with some ghost in particular.
Anwen is in for a bad day when one of the ghost Old Man McGregor is not inclined to follow the rules. Anwen has a hard time trying to convince Old Man McGregor to keep quiet so she can get her to pay. Old Man McGregor is like but it is so much fun to scream and break the rules.
Grave Humor is a hilariously humorous book whose title serves it well and has numerous meanings tied to it. Anwen is a wonderfully quirky, funny, and witty character who will have you rolling with laughter. I just loved the little sayings at the beginning of each chapter. Grave Humor will have you in tears but more than likely they will be tears of joy and not sadness.
Grave Humor has a little bit of all sorts of characters, for instance, it starts out with a ghost, and then you are introduced to a vampire. It has pixies, angels, demons, succubus plus a few more. Oh, and there is also a very handsome man in the freeze in the basement. Anwen had her eye on this handsome dude from the moment she saw him. The way Anwen described him I bet her tongue reached up and slapped her brains out.
Grave Humor grabbed my attention from the first page and never let go until the last page was turned. I have a feeling that Grave Humor is going to be with me for a long time to come. Once I picked up Grave Humor I could not put it down. I would so love to see Grave Humor on the big screen.
I highly recommend Grave Humor to anyone looking for a fun and humorous book to brighten up the day. One-click your copy today to begin a humorous adventure.
I really enjoyed this book and will keep rereading it.
love it and she is on my auto buy list
I just love how this author writes. Laugh out loud funny in places! Just what you need to brighten your day.
RJ Blaine just KEEPS ON getting better!!!! Wonderful story and a great plot line with some great twists!!!! LOVED IT!!! Couldn’t stop reading until I was finished!!!!
When I finish an RJ Blain book I’m always filled with a cloud of happiness. Each book ends with a potential of so many hilarious new things and whether those come to fruition or not it’s the potential that leaves you high on happiness. Grave Humor is definitely one of those happiness more potential books. I love how all of the books in this series can intertwine.
Anwen is such an amazing lead. She’s full of kindness, loyalty, compassion, and sass. She gives as much as she gets. Eoghan, at first, comes across as arrogant and mean. I’m reality he is arrogant, but he’s super sweet to Anwen. Of course we see more of a favorite character, Lucifer. We finally get more than a passing glance at his wife as well! I’ve fallen in love with all the reoccurring characters, as well as the new ones.
Grave Humor gives us so much laughter as well as a great mystery. RJ Blain is an amazing storyteller who defines original in her stories. You’ll not find another series out there to compare it with, and I love her a little more for that!
4 Cranky Stars
I honestly don’t know how to review this book. It was quirky and interesting I can say that. It is book ten in the series but they are meant to be read solo so you shouldn’t feel lost. I kind of did at times like there was more to this town and these inhabitants that showed up at Anwen’s house or maybe they aren’t at all part of a backstory so who knows. You can safely jump in if you like so buckle up here goes my review.
Anwen is a woman with no good parents who rather partake in illicit hobbies than be a parent. She has been on her own for some time just trying to make ends meet. She isn’t a magical being like some citizens of her town, but she pings radars. She just thinks she’s an anomaly with an addiction to honey rocks. She works at a funeral home where the dead just up and have a walkabout and ooz on the furniture then there is a vampire and a species of unknown origin in the basement. You can imagine what happens next I’m sure because poof the vampire and the unknown or antique as she calls him wake up and boy does her life change. Suddenly she’s flush with money and a new job and Lucifer himself just shows up out the blue in her house if she says his name. Then there are headless angels that somehow talk, a funeral director with a vendetta, a cranky neighbor, a snow leopard person, a dragon and yeah, I’ll stop here. Her life takes on a new meaning and she’s lusting after Eoghan (the antique). Did I mention we have a virgin alert? Nope? Ok cool so there is that as well. Anwen will soon get answers to her purpose and his soon enough.
See like I said quirky. It almost felt like a history lesson in a religious lesson inside of an anatomy lesson, so I got lost a few times. I also couldn’t keep track of who was talking because of how it was written. It did have some funny moments when she mentioned a punchline and the angels literally thought she wanted to line up people and punch them which they were onboard to do. It did start to pick up toward the ends and I liked the background characters as well. All in all pretty interesting I suppose if you like quirky paranormal books with humor in them.
I love everything that RJ writes, but Grave Humor is so much fun! It does play upon aspects of a previous book that she wrote, Whatever for Hire, but you don’t have to read it first (Of course, after reading Grave Humor, you will want to pick it up and read it as well!)
Despite the author’s signature snarky humour and twisted flawed characters, this turned out to be a surprisingly philosophical examination on the nature of death, death myths and the afterlife. The author has a true gift for analysing philosophical or social justice issues in a way that is accessible and understandable to the average reader. I quite enjoyed the varied depths of this novel and I want the next soon.
R. J. Blain’s Grave Humor (Magical Romantic Comedies #14) is a charming tale. In this story, funeral home employee Anwen Nash meets immortal Eoghan Olin. Her life will never be the same again. This novel takes place in Sunset, Alabama. It is a world full of magic.
Grave Humor was an amusing read. R. J. Blain’s writing style reminds me of Shelly Laurenston. I consider that a good thing. It was entertaining reading about an immortal who was in hibernation and now experiencing the modern world. I enjoyed the plot. It was full of conspiracy and interesting twists. I appreciated her use of religion and mythology.
This is the first book that I have read by R. J. Blain. I did not realize this book was part of a series when I started reading it. I could follow the book with no problem, but I am curious about the previous books in the series. I plan on checking out the other books in the series. I recommend this book to people who enjoy humorous paranormal romances. I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.
