Andrew, the Duke of Harrow, has returned to his Oxfordshire estate after years away in Vienna on a diplomatic engagement. He left England after losing his beloved wife in childbirth. But his children consider him a stranger, and the new governess disapproves of him. In hope of restoring his family, he has invited a German baroness who may become the new Duchess of Harrow, and her brother, as his … brother, as his guests. Andrew’s plans do not go to order. Were there three attempts made on his young son William’s life, or are they a string of amazing coincidences? Why would anyone want to harm William? Andrew finds himself working with the governess to discover the truth while keeping his son safe, and disconcertingly, comes to depend on Miss Harrismith, as his respect for her deepens. When the truth finally becomes clear, Andrew faces his feelings, but then finds his chance of happiness snatched away.

Another good book by this author!
It is impossible for me to hear “governess” and “Duke” without immediately thinking of Jane Eyre, and there are plot elements in the second half that have echoes, particularly when Jenny leaves in haste in the middle of the night (although for quite different reasons), but the first half of the book, which was my favorite, reminded me of “The Sound of Music,” which is an entirely different governess-falls-in-love-with-employer story. If you enjoy historical romance (1820s England), I recommend it!
Jenny Harrismith takes the position as governess to the absent Duke of Harrow’s children. When the Duke returns with a potential bride, Jenny encounters too many accidents that happen to the Duke’s son. Along the way, she and the Duke begin to see each other in a different way. Great story.
Andrew is a duke, a widowed, busy, important leader of men. Since his beloved wife’s death two years prior, he has spent little time at home with his two small children at his country estate.
Miss Jenny Harrismith is governess to the duke’s two young children, and she is as fond of them as they are of her.
Andrew has decided he wishes to curtail his diplomatic duties, find a wife and return to the country to raise his children. So he invites a widow to his home to determine if they’ll suit.
The story evolves into a mystery that involves a threat to Andrew’s family, and an unexpected attraction between he and his governess, Jenny. The two band together to protect the home and those in it only to be consumed with longing for each other. Jenny too has her own secrets.
Can each address their pasts, their social differences to have a future together?
I enjoyed this story and the cast of characters. I have read this and the previous stand alone books in this series and am looking forward to the next.
Miss Jenny Harrismith, the daughter of an impoverished Baron from Yorkshire, has been the governess to the children of the Duke of Harrow. The Duke has been in Vienna on diplomatic business for the crown for years and his children hardly know him. When he returns home, he brings a German baroness and her brother with him as guests. However, things do not go as planned and many strange occurrences begin to happen. Jenny finds that the guests are rude and are more involved in what London Society can offer. As a plot the hurt William, the Duke’s son, develops, Jenny finds herself working with the Duke to unravel the plot. Who is the cause of this intrigue and why is it happening? A mystery in the making for a great page turner.
A wonderful story that has a little bit of it all. Mystery, suspense, adventure and an unexpected attraction between a governess and a Duke. What could be more entertaining? Jenny Harrismith is the governess to the children of Andrew, the Duke of Harrow. After his wife died, he had to get away and took a diplomatic position in Vienna and had become a stranger to his children. But he finally decided it was time to come home and take care of his responsibilities.
Jenny had left home after an ultimatum from her father, a baron, and had been with her two wonderful charges for the past year. When Andrew finally returned, he brought with him a German Baroness with the thought he may ask her to be his wife. But he is impressed by Jenny who he can tells loves his children who in turn love her.
Then the adventure begins and draws them together. It seems his son is being target by someone trying to kill him and their only concern is to keep him safe. But a lot begins to happen and they can only count on each other and those close.
Maggie Anderson has written an amazing story that pulled me in from the first page and I was eager to find out what happened. Sit back and take some time because you will not want to put it down until the end!! Although part of a series, this can be read as a standalone. I highly recommend this entertaining tale!
What a wonderful story! Andrew returns to his estate after being away for years as a diplomat. Andrew. Brings home a woman he is thinking about marrying. Eager to get to know his children again, he is impressed by how much his children love Miss Jenny. As he gets to know her he realizes how much she loves them. Drawn to Jenny he can’t help compare her to the woman he is possibly going to marry. When someone attempts to kill his son Andrew and Jenny must work together to keep the children safe. This was such a sweet story, but I found it to be a lot more. Loved both Andrew and Jenny’s characters. I loved the mystery and love how Maggi Andersen’s other characters from her books make appearances. I have enjoyed reading her other stories and throughly enjoyed this one. I definitely recommend book!
