One of Purewow’s “Best Beach Reads of Summer 2018”Winner for Best Book of 2018 of the Fresh Fiction Awards!New York Times bestselling author Kristan Higgins is beloved for her heartfelt novels filled with humor and wisdom. Now, she tackles an issue every woman deals with: body image and self-acceptance.Emerson, Georgia, and Marley have been best friends ever since they met at a weight-loss camp … since they met at a weight-loss camp as teens. When Emerson tragically passes away, she leaves one final wish for her best friends: to conquer the fears they still carry as adults.
For each of them, that means something different. For Marley, it’s coming to terms with the survivor’s guilt she’s carried around since her twin sister’s death, which has left her blind to the real chance for romance in her life. For Georgia, it’s about learning to stop trying to live up to her mother’s and brother’s ridiculous standards, and learning to accept the love her ex-husband has tried to give her.
But as Marley and Georgia grow stronger, the real meaning of Emerson’s dying wish becomes truly clear: more than anything, she wanted her friends to love themselves.
A novel of compassion and insight, Good Luck With That tells the story of two women who learn to embrace themselves just the way they are.

I loved this book so much! Very realistic, very real. I’ve experienced the difference between the real world and the skinny world. Very well written. I loved the characters. This book made me laugh out loud and shed a tear. Wonderful read!
This is one of my favorite authors & this didn’t disappoint. Made me cry, was very realistic and as a “fat girl” most of my life, hit home. Amazing as always
A compassionate, funny, bittersweet, and touching story of three friends on their journeys to accepting themselves. There’s a bit of romance, but mostly this is a story about friendship and learning how to love yourself.
This was my first book by this author, and it won’t be the last. I loved the topic; I loved the characters and how they interacted with one another. It was a heartwarming, yet a little heartbreaking, story that kept me page-turning. I always love the addition of a dog too.
Loving self shines through this book. Higgins is a master at this.
This book was in my to-be-read file for way too long. I finally read it! Kristan Higgins is such a good writer.
When I first started reading this book, it made me pretty uncomfortable because I am a heavy person myself. Some of the experiences these women had were what I have experienced myself. Part of the book was somewhat sad, but the characters were extremely witty and charming and per typical Kristan Higgins, I got quite the laugh at a number of things.
I loved the characters in this story about childhood friends who bonded at a fat camp. Kristan Higgins does an amazing job of peeking inside the lives of each woman and using a little humor to keep the pages turning.
An excellent story written very sensitively about the physical, emotional and social difficulties of women (and men) who are overweight. The interactions of family and friends are so realistic, the characters could be your close friends. I definitely recommend this book.
I don’t care who you are, you need to read this book. Georgia, Marley, and Emerson maybe fictional characters, but they have a lot to teach us.
The focus here may be primarily weight and body image issues, but the over arching messages of acceptance and self love are important for everyone to hear.
Personally, I related most to Marley. I could see little bits of myself in her and cheered for her when she fully embraced her own value and started putting herself first.
I could also see myself a little bit in Georgia and was incredibly proud of the way she embraced her emotional evolution.
Ms Higgins took these two characters and the shake up of losing their friend to craft a powerful narrative about how to stop treading water and truly start living.
Incredibly well written,Good Luck With That is an emotional book – that made me cry a couple of times. Emerson’s journals showed a heartbreaking view of her life while Marley and Georgia dealt with their own issues. Ms Higgins is an author whose work I pick up expecting to enjoy it. This fits the style I anticipate from her and takes it up a notch in terms of emotional impact.
Loved it. I was totally involved with characters and wanted things to work out for them.
Loved it, one of my favorite authors
My heart was not ready for this book. Maybe I should have read some reviews beforehand but honestly I don’t know if I would have continued and that would have been a tragedy. I’m not sure how I found myself breaking and rebuilding at the same time. Crying and then laughing with those tears in my eyes. From friendships, to loss, from self-hate, to self-acceptance, from heartbreak to real love. This book was beautifully written and needs to be read by everyone.
This was not an easy read. The author wrote from the heart and it showed. Lots of hard-hitting truth in this book. An excellent read.
I meant to review this book ages ago. We read this last fall as an interim book at our Barnes & Noble book club (before it went monthly). We picked it because the premise spoke to many of the women in the club. They were all glad we did.
Kristan Higgins manages to pack A TON into this novel. Not a word is wasted. It’s a wonderful story of learning to love yourself as yourself as well as learning to live for now rather than for “someday when you’re perfect”. I loved it and so did the rest of the book club.
I absolutely adored this book beyond what words can express! The characters are so in-depth, amazing, and HUMAN. The author nailed everything in this book from the peer pressure of society, the depression caused from it, and the dreams to be better than what is already there. Given the time, I would have finished this book in a single sitting. This has definitely become one of my favorite books and I’m going to hunt down more of this author’s work because of it. The entire story just hits you on a personal level so well that you find yourself wanting to shout “yes! That’s exactly how I feel.”
I had my chance for the last six years with my amazing fiance, but a fatal motorcycle crash a couple of weeks ago took away the love of my life. This book also helped to get me through this extremely difficult part of my life as I raise his young son. I will be taking more from this book than most because of this fact. I am so happy Georgia and Marley got their happy endings. That they stood up for themselves and fought back against the too-judgmental world. It gives women back the courage they were born with that gets suppressed by society.
Needless to say, this book comes highly recommended.
Love all of Higgins’ books!
As a petite woman I was never aware of the trials and hardships of larger women. Kristen Higgins made these characters so real and true to life that some parts were painful to read, but in a good realistic way. She really got to the heart of the matter and made me realize that for so many people food is as addicting as heroin and just as damaging. I recommend this book to anyone looking for a heartfelt story.
Just adored this book.
I loved this book. Last year I read a book by Roxane Gay called Hunger which related a number of the same self image problems found in this book that can lead to serious eating problems such as obesity. Two friends, Marley and Georgia, are stunned by the death of their friend Emerson whom they met at a camp for overweight teenagers. Prior to her death, they visit her in the hospital and are shocked to see that she is huge and dying. She hands them a list they created at camp and asks that they complete the actions they always wanted to do. Fulfilling the items on the list makes them move out of their everyday lives and come to terms with their bodies and who they really are. I have always been overweight myself and many of the feelings and experiences these characters had are ones I have had.
