Since its original publication in 1936, Gone With the Wind—winner of the Pulitzer Prize and one of the bestselling novels of all time—has been heralded by readers everywhere as The Great American Novel.Widely considered The Great American Novel, and often remembered for its epic film version, Gone With the Wind explores the depth of human passions with an intensity as bold as its setting in the … bold as its setting in the red hills of Georgia. A superb piece of storytelling, it vividly depicts the drama of the Civil War and Reconstruction.
This is the tale of Scarlett O’Hara, the spoiled, manipulative daughter of a wealthy plantation owner, who arrives at young womanhood just in time to see the Civil War forever change her way of life. A sweeping story of tangled passion and courage, in the pages of Gone With the Wind, Margaret Mitchell brings to life the unforgettable characters that have captured readers for over seventy years.

This is one classic that everyone should read in their lifetime. It’s long but well worth it! I enjoyed learning about the main characters Scarlett and Rhett over the course of this book. There are so many quotable lines from this book…great writing.
Reading a classic is like digesting a rich, finely crafted meal. Margaret Mitchell was ahead of her time. I wish more people would voluntarily read this book, instead of being scared off by the sheer number of pages. Granted, it is a hefty novel but it is a full-course meal worth consuming.
While to many, this book may seem daunting, I really enjoyed reading this book while in High School. I had never seen the movie, and of course the book is always better. This is an amazing book that includes love, hate, sorrow, growth, family, struggle, triumph, history and so much more! The characters seem to almost leap off of the page at you …
I read this book until 5 am. I couldn’t stop reading it. It was a wonderful book.i read most of the books I read from start to finish. I usually read 2 books a day. I just love to read and my Kindle is always in my purse if I’m going somewhere. I did the same with books. I hate wasting time waiting in lines so I read.
I try to reread this book every few years! What’s not to love about it?
This book is such a rich portrait of the pre/post civil war south from the perspective of a white southern strong willed girl. It is very interesting to watch her grow up and learn from the consequences of her actions.
This is my one book to bring on a desert island. There is no stronger recommendation than that.
GONE WITH THE WIND is my go-to escape novel. I can open it to any page and dive right in. I’m always astounded by how Margaret Mitchell was able to create a protagonist who we should all hate…but we end up rooting for her. As happens so often, the book is much better than the movie. And the movie is awesome!
WhenI read it I am transported and lose touch with present day.
I do not like to re-read books. I like to read a book and then see a movie but after that I want to move on to something else. This is one of the few books I have read over and over. I am from the South and I love this book. Scarlett O’Hara is my favorite female book character of all time.
Surprisingly many generations of people have seen the movie, but only a fraction have read the book. Take the time to read this grand epic. Margaret Mitchell did an amazing job with this antebellum novel. I could feel Scarlett’s terror as the “yankees” get ever closer to Atlanta. You realize that she throws away happiness with both hands while …
I imagine everyone who is reading this post saw he movie first. But although I loved the movie and have it on DVD, it doesn’t compare to Scarlet’s adventures in the printed form.
Will always be one of my all time favorite books. I read Gone With The Wind while traveling from Portland, Oregon to Australia. It’s a big book but I completed on my return trip and was sad when it ended.
I loved this book so much after I read it that I re-read it again and again, and I even started collecting old editions. It’s Southern storytelling at its juiciest with a protagonist who is as much villain as heroine, kind of like the period in our history that serves as the setting.
Classic tale of love during the Civil war.
I fell in love with Rhett and understood Scarlet.
This book is a classic. Everyone should read it. Not because of the history, which is interesting, but also because it brings a part of history to life that is overlooked in class.
Phenomenal. Timeless characters put this classic in my top five favorite reads.
This is one of the GREAT books of English literature. I read it the first time (that’s right “first” time) when I was fourteen. Even at 1,000 pages, I’ve read it twice more besides seeing the film upteen times. The story of a Georgia planter’s family in the days as the slavery was drawing to a close is a real eye opener. The reader is faced …
Even though I was born and raised in the South, this book took a while to get into. I didn’t identify at all with characters. That lifestyle was so out of the world com!pared to today. But I was determined to find out for myself what was so special about this book. I was transported and lost in time. This is one of those books that you find …
