Gone with the Wind was the first romance novel I ever read (in High School at SMNorth). I was riveted by Mitchell’s characters and history. Rhett and Scarlett were a perfect match and I imagined readers pulling for them to get together. But alas…
This is one of my all time favorite books. Though, as an African-American, I find parts of it troubling, it’s still the bible of the antebellum and reconstructed south. Scarlet O’Hara is an unforgettable character. Her stubborn attraction to Ashley Wilkes blinds her to true love. The historical aspects of the book, including the Civil War, are …
I can’t believe I waited so long to read this. It was wonderful!
Read this book as part of the Great American Read and I’m amazed I hadn’t read it before now. It was a new slant for me, having Confederate roots, all be it from Texas. It was a wonderful read and now I understand it’s popularly.
I read this book after moving to Atlanta. It was a much better read than the movie was watching. It gave me my first glimpse to the culture and history of the state I was calling home.
Read the book in high school in 1963. Loved it then.
I reread this book every summer in my youth. It remains one of the best books I’ve ever read
This is one of the first great novels that really sucked me in. As the oldest of four sisters, I remember each as my sisters was walking around in a fog. Mom or I would realize she’s reading Gone With the Wind”.
As a younger reader, I was turned off by anything that seemed to be remotely romantic—instead hitting up the fantasy and mystery books. But imagine my surprise to find out that Gone with the Wind isn’t just a romance novel, but an epic look into the Confederate South struggling through the Civil War.
I enjoyed immersing myself into the culture of …
A combination of history, courage and romance.
I have constantly said that my favorite movie of all time is Gone With The Wind, but I have never read the book. After The Great American Read began this summer, I made it my goal to read at least one of the books on the list. My pic was GWTW.
I have not finished it yet, but I have to say it has already exceded my expectations. The depth of …
Classic. My favorite.
My all-time favorite book! So much better than the movie too.
2nd review (read Dec 2019):
Wow. This second time through I gritted my teeth from the moment Scarlett tells Rhett that she doesn’t want any more children until the end, anticipating all the awful things to come. I would never have suffered through the vicarious misery a second time if not for the sequel, “Scarlett,” which redeems all and which I …
Best book ever written
If you want a peak into the antebellum South, that continues through the Civil War and into reconstruction, mixed with a love story, a strong, saucy heroine and a rascal hero, this is some of the best historical fiction you can read. Don’t let the movie dissuade you from reading this amazing, poignant and heart-breaking story. Scarlet O’Hara …
Best book I’ve ever read!
This is perhaps my favorite book. Set in Georgia during the height of the Civil War, Gone With The Wind tells the story of Scarlett O’Hara and the struggles she faces to save her family plantation and protect those she loves.
I fell in love with Gone With The Wind in middle school. It was, is, and always will be one of my favorite books of all time. It is classic and timeless. A story of the beautiful and yet racist old south. The O’Hara family and their lovely daughters are living the good life on Tara Plantation. BBQ’s, hoop skirts, balls, the whole nine yards! One …
