Edgar Award finalist Ben Rehder’s novels have made best-of-the-year lists in Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Field & Stream. GONE THE NEXT is the first novel in the Roy Ballard mystery series. About GONE THE NEXT:Meet Roy Ballard, freelance videographer with a knack for catching insurance cheats. He’s working a routine case, complete with hours of tedious surveillance, … complete with hours of tedious surveillance, when he sees something that shakes him to the core. There, with the subject, is a little blond girl wearing a pink top and denim shorts—the same outfit worn by Tracy Turner, a six-year-old abducted the day before. When the police are skeptical of Ballard’s report—and with his history, who can blame them?—it’s the beginning of the most important case of his life.

I loved his characters. And the way they related to each other and their humor.
Loved it.
The plot of the story was excellent but what I really enjoyed was the character of Roy Ballard. Quirky and unpredictable, his reactions somehow changed the very tenor of the story.
The thrill and action were perfect till the very end and the twists and turns kept me hooked.
If you can handle foul language, then it’s a good read
Great story about Ray Ballard who is an Insurance Investigator who uses photography. One of his jobs led to a missing girl investigation. Couldn’t stop reading.
I like all of the Ben Rehder books. They are page turners, and keep the action moving.
Characters very humanistic. Writing provided good visuals of place. I could ‘feel’ the surroundings as I read. @000000001
Great beach read. Light and breezy. Fast-paced. If you like goofy main characters who appear as if the cards are stacked against them, but come out as winners in the end, you’ll enjoy this book.
A very entertaining read – you won’t regret it.
enjoyed
Writing doesn’t get much better than this. Solid.
Good short read
First read for this author. I struggled. The concept started interestingly enough but within a few chapters, it became too unbelievable a story line to continue. So I deleted it.
I really enjoyed my first book by Ben Rehder, Gone the Next. It’s a very intriguing descent into a great story. I read this book quickly over three days. It’s easy to picture the main character, Roy, other characters and settings as the story developed. I particularly liked the thread that wasn’t solved until the end. Highly recommended.
Roy Ballard investigates possible insurance frauds. What started out as a routine investigation becomes a case of a kidnapped girl. It really hits home because many years ago his own daughter was kidnapped. The case becomes very personal. There are many surprises in the plot and you won’t want to quit reading.
Roy works to discover insurance fraud. On one of his stakeouts, he sees a little girl who fits the description of an abducted one. He goes to the police, but they don’t believe him, mostly because of his past. So he takes it upon himself to see if it is her. Every parents nightmare, his included. This book will keep you entranced throughout …
This book was action packed, suspenseful and unpredictable. The hero was quite a loveable guy
whose romantic incursions were too earnest and unproductive.
I found this to be an enjoyable read. The characters were enjoyable along with the story line. I recommend giving this author and book a try.
This was a great mystery. There were twists and turns, The writer did a great job..
