Edgar Award finalist Ben Rehder’s novels have made best-of-the-year lists in Publishers Weekly, Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, and Field & Stream. GONE THE NEXT is the first novel in the Roy Ballard mystery series. About GONE THE NEXT:Meet Roy Ballard, freelance videographer with a knack for catching insurance cheats. He’s working a routine case, complete with hours of tedious surveillance, … complete with hours of tedious surveillance, when he sees something that shakes him to the core. There, with the subject, is a little blond girl wearing a pink top and denim shorts—the same outfit worn by Tracy Turner, a six-year-old abducted the day before. When the police are skeptical of Ballard’s report—and with his history, who can blame them?—it’s the beginning of the most important case of his life.

Good plot. Liked the characters. Good extra twist. Kept my interest throughout.
Witty lead character. Good dialogue. Love the dedication and ingenuity of the lead character in solving the crime.
I liked the story within the story and getting to hear the complete story.
Roy is sometimes very annoying. I yelled at him a lot while I read this book. But you dear author brought him through. Thank you!!!! I hope you keep Mia to help him cooking with great leads. She is a jewel. I didn’t yell at her, not once. He needs her and she needs him. Great book. Judy
The story line was great. What I liked best was the dialogue between the characters was more realistic than other books I have read.
Well put together, a good story, and believable.
Quick read, fast paced and interesting storyline. This book is written from a first person character point of view which is not my favorite, but I got over that after the first few chapters. The main character’s smart aleck verbal style gave interest to his character at first, but after a while it sometimes just became tiresome with every dialogue …
Great book. Kept you guessing. Tragic story, but very well thought out.
Shows true life horror of abduction.
Could not put it down
Since I had lived in Texas i could relate to the location as the story evolved. Plot was very interesting and held my attention.
Well written and I loved the way the ending developed!
There’s enough difference between a videographer and an investigator to make this a slightly different plot. The hero having gone through a child abduction also added a different dimension. I enjoyed this book and the characters who brought it to life.
Very entertaining. Liked the main character. He was funny and tenacious. Good book.
Great read from the beginning to end!
This book was good from the beginning with a surprising ending.
Well written, easy to follow, heart wrenching in parts
great read
Not your ordinary mystery.
If you like a good plot mixed with likeable characters, and wit, then this book is for you.
I loved this book. Ben Rehder is an excellent writer. I felt immediately like I knew “Roy” and loved his sense of humor. The story was both tragic and humorous, making for a terrific read.
The portrayal off the lead character is amazing, the personality and caustic wit fairly leaps off the page,a great read
