Book DescriptionEmily Johnston is GONE. She’s been GONE for more than a week. She’s also the daughter of Harry Starke’s one-time boss and nemesis, Chattanooga Police Chief Wesley Johnston. Harry and Chief Johnston haven’t seen eye-to-eye in a long time, but when Johnston needs help, he knows there’s only one man he can turn to. But Johnston’s jurisdiction ends at the city limits and when Emily’s … city limits and when Emily’s body is discovered in a remote part of the county, Harry has to deal with the imperious sheriff, Israel Hands and two incompetent county detectives. So begins an investigation that will take Harry on a wild ride across Signal Mountain, a case that will include a second murder, two cold cases, sex, alternative lifestyles, and deadly danger for Harry and his friends, until… well, as always, there’s a twist in the tale.

KUDOS for a mystery well-done…
I definitely intend to read more by Blair Howard. This was my first and I thoroughly enjoyed his writing style, wonderful characters, attention to detail, and realistic dialogue. In fact, the whole process of investigation was handled so convincingly that you feel like you are involved each step of the way. The story and action just flows from page to page, intertwining personal relationships and character development with solving crime. I’ve come to like Harry Starke a lot along with Amanda, his love companion, and his investigative team. Although the guilty parties lingered in the back of my mind, I was caught up in the process of elimination and was hooked right up until the end when Harry has his epiphany.
Gone – a review by Rosemary Kenny
Book 5 in the Harry Starke Series starts with young schoolgirls going missing from a private girls school and Harry and Kate are soon involved, in Gone, by the Master of Mystery, Blair Howard.
Why is the Chancellor, Victoria Mason-Jones seemingly not that bothered, although Emily Johnson is the third girl to vanish in just over a year? Why have the local police given up the hunt after the briefest of laid-back investigations? You can be sure the pair, accompanied by amateur sleuth and Channel 7 news anchor, Amanda Cole won’t let the matter drop until the guilty party’s unmasked and brought to justice! Helping Harry break the case by going undercover on her boss’ behalf is Harry’s secretary/PA, Jacque, who enjoys the ‘perks’ of one of Kalliste’s ‘goddesses’ services to the full, although her discoveries turn out to be vital to the case.
When the killer is finally unmasked, seconds before Harry becomes her latest victim, you’ll be stunned and thrilled you bought this great novel…now do all your friends a favour and tell them you’re just ‘wild about Harry’, so they can enjoy this fantastic series too!
Love all Harry and Kate books.
I rec’d this as a free ebook which I started with tepidation because some are not worth the time to read. This isn’t one of those. Well-developed character, great story, twists, turns, deceit, drama that keeps you reading… This won’t be my last Starke book.
This is a very sad story and I feel for Chief Johnstone’s loss of his daughter. As Harry digs up the dirt on Emily’s college, he discovers a prostitution ring, a website called Calista and an alternative lifestyle of intrigue and corruption. What he doesn’t find is Emily’s killer. The twist in this story is that the killer was overlooked, as Harry states, “A Rookie Mistake”. It wasn’t my mistake, because I suspected her from the beginning.
Chief Johnston comes to Harry when his daughter goes missing from an upper class school. Harry and his team along with Kate & Amanda soon find out this is more than a missing daughter. As they dig deeper they find the school ran a secret web site and local security and cops are part of it. Don’t want to spoil this for anyone but you have to read it ! An amazing cast of characters, non stop action/intrigue/mystery and a storyline that will keep you up late !
I was lucky enough to have gotten a free audio book code from the author. I am volunteering to leave this review. Fantastic audio book plenty twist and turns that will keep you guessing till the end. Blair Howard
Police Chief Johnston, Harry’s former boss, has no jurisdiction on Signal Mountain so when his daughter Emily goes missing he asks Harry to look into it. After all, Harry is the best and as he reminds us, he can do things the police cannot. The trail leads Harry into autoerotica, an exclusive lesbian escort service website and several missing person related to Emily’s exclusive school. How can sweet little Emily, as Harry remembers her when she was a child stopping by his desk at police headquarters, possibly be involved in this? Mr. Howard deals with this subject matter well. Both Kate Gazzara and Harry’s new girlfriend Amanda, a news anchor, are involved in this case. I thoroughly enjoy Blair Howard’s books. They are not high literature nor are they heavy on the psychology of the murder. They are good mysteries with a touch of humor and great characters. I see Harry developing as the series goes on. I look forward to more. Tom Lennon, the voice of Harry Starke, did another wonderful job. I will hear him in my head whenever I read a Harry Starke book now.
