On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

“Absorbing . . . In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage—and of a recession-hit Midwest—by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first-person account.”—New Yorker
“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages . . . Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”—The Wall Street Journal
“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose . . . even while you know you’re being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

After watching the film I picked up the book and read it in a day, I instantly regretted watching the film first. This so twisty and unpredictable so I give it 4 out of 4 stars
What an amazing story, thought I knew where it was headed then WHAM!
The ending was lame. Great buildup throughout the book, but the end was a let down, like the author didn’t know what else to do, or how to finish, or really wanted to set up a sequel at the cost of the first book.
I loved this book but felt somewhat let down by the ending.
This book made me curse out loud a few times. If you like nice neat endings tied up in a little bow, you’ll get it… sort of.
Like the book. Hated the movie, very different.
Waste of my time
an absolute roller coaster ride a terrifying end you never saw coming
As is typical, I prefer to read a book before seeing the movie. This book kept me fully engrossed, sometimes even flipping back to re-read a section. The author writes in a way that super glues you to the story. Read this one in one sitting, which I often do – but even if I had planned only a short time reading, I don’t think I would have been …
I enjoyed the suspension of the story as I read.
I also liked the writing style and character development. Definitely a page turner.
Guessed the ending. Disappointing.
Amazing, heart pounding, excellent page turner.
Gives new meaning to the expression: “Marriage isn’t a word; it’s a sentence.”
I never enjoyed this book at all. The writing was well written but it was a poor story. Nobody will learn anything from this book, sorry I read it.
Because I make my living writing novels, I try to read the most current things buzzing the business. It’s part of the job. Not because I want to follow trends, but I need to understand what’s going on.
This was hot several years ago. If it had not been for the buzz I wouldn’t have gotten past the first ten pages. The male lead wasn’t someone I …
Good book and a twist in the end.
Didn’t like it. None of the characters are redeemable.
Enjoyed the many twists and turns right up to the very end
Hated it, hated the deviousness.
Good but not as good as Flynn’s earlier books.
