On a warm summer morning in North Carthage, Missouri, it is Nick and Amy Dunne’s fifth wedding anniversary. Presents are being wrapped and reservations are being made when Nick’s clever and beautiful wife disappears. Husband-of-the-Year Nick isn’t doing himself any favors with cringe-worthy daydreams about the slope and shape of his wife’s head, but passages from Amy’s diary reveal the alpha-girl perfectionist could have put anyone dangerously on edge. Under mounting pressure from the police and the media—as well as Amy’s fiercely doting parents—the town golden boy parades an endless series of lies, deceits, and inappropriate behavior. Nick is oddly evasive, and he’s definitely bitter—but is he really a killer?

“Absorbing . . . In masterly fashion, Flynn depicts the unraveling of a marriage—and of a recession-hit Midwest—by interweaving the wife’s diary entries with the husband’s first-person account.”—New Yorker
“Ms. Flynn writes dark suspense novels that anatomize violence without splashing barrels of blood around the pages . . . Ms. Flynn has much more up her sleeve than a simple missing-person case. As Nick and Amy alternately tell their stories, marriage has never looked so menacing, narrators so unreliable.”—The Wall Street Journal
“The story unfolds in precise and riveting prose . . . even while you know you’re being manipulated, searching for the missing pieces is half the thrill of this wickedly absorbing tale.”—O: The Oprah Magazine

Brilliant and original.
I read this book over my Winter Break 2 years ago, I left it in the car while my family and I went holiday shopping. My cousin was ‘over it’ quickly and while we waited in line to checkout he went back to the car and waited. When I returned he refused to give me back my book. This book is that good, it is one of my favorites, it actually inspired …
One of the best thriller I’ve read in a long while. You won’t be able to put it down.
An original. This is the one that started the “unreliable narrator” craze. Dark, twisted and funny. You won’t like these people, but you won’t be able to stop turning the pages. I love her writing.
There’s something of a divide among readers of this novel. Some view it as a brilliant exegesis of modern marriage or of dysfunctional relationships while others object to the gimmickry of the different time-perspectives or the “lack of resolution” at the end.
I come down hard on the side of “brilliant.” I admire the cleverness of the two voices …
Is there anyone who hasn’t read Gone Girl? It doesn’t seem like it! This was my introduction to the brilliant mind of Gillian Flynn and it was a doozy! As soon as I finished it, I read her previous books (both of which are really, really good– but Gone Girl is almost perfect!).
Gone Girl examines the marriage of Nick and Amy Dunne– a typical …
Amy is a perfect sociopath. Getting inside her head is a wild ride. Incredible thrilling storytelling.
This is the only book that had ever LITERALLY made me miss my subway stop. And I’ve been reading and living in NYC for very, very long time.
This was one of those books that you needed to keep reading to find out what really happened! I didn’t want to put it down or take to many breaks while reading it. The author pulls you into this story of two perfect people who are anything but perfect. The wife is a total psychopath and the husband definitely has some issues. You just cannot …
Just when you think you’ve figured out what happened, the story takes a 180 degree turn and nothing makes sense. Nick and Amy Dunne appeared to be a perfect and happy couple. But, when Amy disappears on their 5th wedding anniversary all sorts of secrets start coming to light. Did Nick really kill Amy? Or is something more sinister at play? Gone …
What can I say about this book that hasn’t been said? Absolute page-turner. Main characters are both horrible people, but so much fun to read about. Wish I could read it again for the first time!
I have no idea how to rate this book. Parts of it were so compulsively readable I couldn’t put it down. Parts made me so angry I wanted to smack someone. Parts made me want to throw the whole thing in the garbage and walk away. Ultimately, I went with 4 stars because no matter how I felt about it I had to read it to the end to see how it was going …
One of my favorite books. You never know for sure what’s going to happen and is a book that you can’t put down once you start. And the twists are amazing.
I’m in the mood for another thriller like Gone Girl or The Girl on the Train. Any recommendations?
Wow. Utterly absorbing, totally disturbing. The characters are fabulously written, the twists surprising and (to me) unforeseen.
My biggest complaint about it was the fact that the f-word appeared about five times per page and the sexual references were about as graphic and crude as they could possibly be. But it didn’t stop me from devouring the …
I read this book a few years ago and still find myself thinking about Nick and Amy. This is one of my favorite stories of all time. It shows how crazy a person can be and how unaware we are of those around us. I loved it!
Loved this book but was sad at the depths people are able to sink to.
I did have a bit of a time with the reading of the diary – it went on too long, but my daughter told me to not put it down, it would be worth it – she was right. I totally enjoyed the read and suprised by the unexpected twist. The characters are well-established of course, which is very important to the telling of the story.
Bookbub asked me to recommend a book that took me out of my comfort zone. I read lots of suspense novels, but Gone Girl wasn’t my typical romantic suspense book. I tend towards character series (for example, Lisa Gardner’s D.D. Warren series) or stand alone novels where the romance is as important as the suspense. Gone Girl definitely does not …
I read Gone Girl several years ago before I tracked my reviews on Goodreads. As I find books that I need to catch up with reviewing, I am trying to updated them… so this is what I remember about the book, and hopefully I’m not mixing it up with the movie, which I saw afterward too.
I do recall this was one of my early non-reliable narrator …
