In Gone for Soldiers, Jeff Shaara carries us back 15 years before the momentous conflict he has so brilliantly chronicled, to a time when the Civil War’s most familiar names are fighting for another cause, junior officers marching under the same flag in an unfamiliar land, experiencing combat for the first time in the Mexican-American War. In March 1847, 8,000 soldiers landed on the beaches … soldiers landed on the beaches of Vera Cruz, led by the army’s commanding general, Winfield Scott-a heroic veteran of the War of 1812, short tempered, vain, and nostalgic for the glories of his youth. At his right hand is Robert E. Lee, a forty year-old engineer, a dignified, serious man who has never seen combat.
In vivid prose that illuminates the dark psychology of soldiers trapped behind enemy lines, Jeff Shaara brings to life the familiar characters, the stunning triumphs and soul-crushing defeats of this fascinating, long-forgotten war.

I have read almost every book written by Jeff. Great historical novels.
No one writes war like Jeff Shaara. Years ago, I devoured the father-son Civil War trilogy Gods and Generals, The Killer Angels, and The Last Full Measure and easily ranked the father, Michael, who wrote The Killer Angels, and the son, Jeff, who wrote the book ends among my favorite authors. Great work from Jeff Shaara and his forey into the Civil War novels!! He is the greatest Civil War and American military history author for fiction genre based on actual objective facts that transpired both domestically and on foreign soil! Shaara is one of my most favored writers, whether fictional or non-fiction! I read all he’s written …
Shaara has done a wonderful job in the telling of a little known period of American history. A small ‘footnote’ in our nation’s development and the events that shaped several individuals that would go on to play larger roles in the Civil War.
I love all Jeff’s books, I love U.S. history, and love the way you are made to feel like you are there and hearing Americans from the past talking to each other. Talking about history like it is happening right now.
