#1 New York Times and Globe and Mail bestselling author Candice Fox delivers a compulsive new crime thriller with Gone by Midnight. Crimson Lake is where people with dark pasts come to disappear–and where others vanish into thin air… When Sara Farrow’s son goes missing from a locked hotel room, she frantically turns for help to Crimson Lake’s unlikeliest private investigators–disgraced cop … Lake’s unlikeliest private investigators–disgraced cop Ted Conkaffey and convicted killer Amanda Pharrell.
Just the sort of twisted puzzle that gets Amanda’s blood pumping, the disappearance couldn’t have come at a worse time for Ted. He has just this one week with Lillian, the daughter he barely knows…but the clock is ticking for the lost boy.
Amanda and Ted’s search dredges up the area’s worst characters, and the danger they uncover could well put Ted’s own child in deadly peril.

OMG!!! Best one yet!!! First and foremost, I have to say this, I LOVE AMANDA!!! The chemistry (and I don’t mean romantic and/or sexual – they are professional partners) is sooo hilarious. Not only was this the best installment of the series but, also the funniest one too. There were sooo many times, I found myself LMAO!!! Ted and Amanda are the perfect partners for each other with their own character flaws and defects and quirky idiosyncrasies that are so amusing when they’re together.
While Ted and Amanda’s partnership is chockful of entertainment, the crime story in this one was darker and more sinister than the first two books. I love this series and I can’t wait to read the next book. OOOHHH WEY!!! Loved the ending: war between the bikers and the cops!!!
First in the series I have read. A friend won it from Goodreads and loaned it to me. I loved Amanda. She had me cracking up. Even though I hadn’t read the others, I was able to follow along bc she revisited somethings so I was not completely lost. Now, I have to read the other ones.
Ted Conkaffey and Amanda Pharrell are pulled into the search for missing 8-year old Richie Farrow. While on vacation with 3 other couples, Richie disappears and his mother Sara, who has followed Ted’s podcast has asked for his assistance in the search. Ted and Amanda search leads them to 2 different suspects. Then, Constable Joanna Fischer, who was best friends with Pip Sweeney, has an ax to grind with Amanda. Joanna blames Amanda for Pip’s death. This is the 3rd installment of the Crimson Lake series. This is a fast paced read. I really have enjoyed this series and writing style. I would recommend this series
Last year I won the first two books from Booklish.com, so was thrilled the author had written another. The books should really be read in order.
Ted Conkaffey’s ex wife is finally going to allow him to have their 3 year old daughter Lillian come to visit with him unsupervised for the first time. But timing has not been good for Ted and he is called on by a distraught mother, whose son has disappeared from a locked hotel room with three other boys inside. His partner, quirky Amanda Pharrell, quickly deduces that the boys had found a way to get out of the room and back in for room checks. She also deduces many other things, that the local police do not want to hear from the two infamous PIs. Some of the police are so closed minded, that they would rather hurt Ted and Amanda, then find the missing boy. Ted’s only other friend is the county morgue doctor, Dr. Val Gratteur, who ends up watching Lillian. The characters in this page turner are intriguing, the plot twisted, the writing brilliant and there is a very real surprise at the end. One take away- never leave a CCW in your car, it should ALWAYS be on your person.
Great new author. If you love James Patterson, then read this book. Alot of twists and turns will keep you guessing to the end. Very interesting characters and very good storyline. So pick up this book and hold on tight for the ride of your life.
I have the first two books of this series in hardcover. So when I saw Candice had the new book coming out, I jumped at the chance to request this from Macmillan/Tor so I could read it, and I’m so glad I did.
As far as the storyline of the missing boy, Richard, Fox gives us the perfect setup. Four young boys are left alone in a hotel room, with their parents downstairs eating and drinking. With only an hourly check-in, the boys are definitely not going to stay put. So when one goes missing, the mother hires Ted to find her son. Of course, Ted is going to work with Amanda on this one, even if the police chief wants her to have nothing to do with it.
In this book, Ted gets to have his daughter Lillian for an entire week, which is a huge adjustment for him. But he also has a case involving the missing boy, so he needs to find the right balance of work and parenthood. It’s a role he hasn’t had in a while, but he relishes having his daughter under his roof.
I adore Ted and Amanda; they make a fantastic team as they both have gone through something major in their lives. Amanda’s quirky character is fun, and she’s incredibly perceptive. She doesn’t have the typical reactions when she figures things out, and it makes her that much more a lovable character. I love how Fox creates these wonderful setups that make you question everyone. She has wonderful characters who you cheer on because things are always going wrong for them. I absolutely love this series and Gone by Midnight is a fantastic addition. Well done!
I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Absolutely fantastic! I’ve managed to read this series out of order but it is still fabulous and you know what the back story is so you won’t be “lost”. Superb writing with believable, relatable characters. I definitely recommend this book! Enjoy!
