Agent Kevin Herriman wants praise from his boss, who’s also his best friend. He’s working his first case as lead, but things aren’t going well. Not only does he consider it far from exciting, it also comes with a strong-willed female civilian who might be mixed up in exotic animal smuggling.Carlie Noblett lives determined. Dealt a sight impairment at a young age, she’s fought for what she’s … what she’s wanted. Now a substitute teacher who works at a pet shop part time, what she wants is romance and a little adventure. Except a run-in with the swaggering agent isn’t what she had in mind.
When the suspected smuggling operation morphs into something more evil, Kevin’s got his hands full trying to solve a case that’s bigger than he imagined. Just like the bright flit of a goldfinch wing, so is love when it makes an appearance and worth the high cost—if it survives.

BEAUTIFUL BIRDS
GOLDFINCHES is the fourth book in the Unlikely Partners series. This would stand on its own without having read the previous three in the series, but I always recommend reading a series in the order of release.
I’m going to start by saying that my husband and I are birders. We have feeders and bird baths in our yards and spend a lot of time and money cleaning them and filling them. We can tell you what kind visit on a daily basis and have even given names to a few of the regulars, like the Red-Shouldered Hawk that likes to wash in our bird bath. His name is George. I only wish we had goldfinches visiting us on a regular basis!
Carlie and Kevin are both downright annoying characters. She has a chip on her shoulder that just never softens. Since we have enough of that in the news right now, I’m not interested. If she had matured and grown as a person, I’d say it was a good thing. Without that qualifier, she is not my kind of character. Kevin is no better. He starts out as a workaholic and in the end he was more than willing to put her in a cab with a “see ya later” when he was busy with his job.
They may have solved the crime, but they did not grow as people or as a couple. Therefore, three stars for mystery solved and none for romance.
Note: While I received this book as a gifted ARC via Booksprout, my opinions are my own and are given freely.

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this author since this is my first book by her. Kevin and Carlie are opposites in every way. Kevin is investigating a case involving animals going missing. Carlie works for a pet store. What ensues is much more dangerous than anticipated. Thee characters are well developed and engaging and the storyline had suspense and drama that kept turning the pages.

This is the fourth book in the Unlikely Partners series. I have loved this series so far and this book did not disappoint! Ms. Sookoo is an amazing storyteller and she has given us another story filled with mystery, suspense, and drama. The storyline was captivating and captured my attention right from the beginning. Kevin was finally given the lead on a case and learns that it involves a pet shop, of all things. At first he thinks it’s a joke but later learns that exotic animal smuggling is involved. Carlie works part-time at the pet shop and works with Kevin to bring down the smuggling ring, which turns out to be something even more evil. Kevin then must work to protect both Carlie and the animals and keep them safe – and maybe find love in the process! This was another well-written story that had just the right amount of mystery, romance, and suspense to keep me guessing. This is a great book and series, and I definitely recommend you give it a try – you won’t be disappointed!

I just love this series!! In this book, Kevin Herriman gets his first lead on a case after Mitchell gets promoted and he thinks it is a ho-hum case that will not showcase his ability as an agent or likely to further his career in any way. He has no idea where this particular case will take him or who he will meet in the investigation that will change his life in a very major way!! Enter Carlie Noblitt who suffers from a rare progressive eye condition that has left her with minimal eyesight and is likely to cause the total loss of her vision in the future. Carlie is a wonderful character who is independent and yet needy at the same time. She is well aware of her limitations and is willing to admit that she does need help at times all the while wanting to retain her individuality at all costs. This does lead her to make a rash decision or two or three that puts her in the cross-hairs of the villains.
I was a little disappointed in Mitchel who seemed to have become just like the supervisors he had disliked so much in the earlier books before he received the injury that essentially ended his fieldwork and netted him the promotion to supervisor of his own teams. I wanted to shake him and ask him where he had misplaced the rebel we had all fallen in love with, in the first three books of the series!
If you have been putting off reading this series because it is a contemporary suspense series and not historical romance like so many of the other books written by Sandra Sookoo, do not let that stop you from picking these books up! You will be missing out on an excellent series full of action, drama, danger, romance, and witty humor with feisty heroines and dedicated FBI agents willing to give their all to solve the case and protect those they come to love more than their own lives!!

Love probably isn’t at the top of their minds as she works to pay expenses and he works to put specialized thieves away
Sometimes love happens despite best intentions
