In the latest thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, homicide detective Eve Dallas investigates a murder with a mysterious motive–and a terrifying weapon. Pediatrician Kent Abner received the package on a beautiful April morning. Inside was a cheap trinket, a golden egg that could be opened into two halves. When he pried it apart, highly toxic airborne fumes entered his body–and … entered his body–and killed him.
After Eve Dallas calls the hazmat team–and undergoes testing to reassure both her and her husband that she hasn’t been exposed–it’s time to look into Dr. Abner’s past and relationships. Not every victim Eve encounters is an angel, but it seems that Abner came pretty close–though he did ruffle some feathers over the years by taking stands for the weak and defenseless. While the lab tries to identify the deadly toxin, Eve hunts for the sender. But when someone else dies in the same grisly manner, it becomes clear that she’s dealing with either a madman–or someone who has a hidden and elusive connection to both victims.

Don’t care how many she writes with the same characters, they are all enjoyable, interesting, and cleverly done.
Have read every one in the series, and sometimes re-read them.
What a milestone, book 50 in the Death series. A series I love and re-read all the time.
This one has an interesting plot and most of the usual characters. The death delivery is different but investigated by Eve, Roake and Peabody with the same in-depth procedures as the other books. A good read…
I’m a fan. If you haven’t read the series, I’d say begin with the first NAKED IN DEATH and keep going. Terrific main characters and a rep company of secondary ones; each has an arc over the fifty ( !!) books. Set in 2058 and onwards New York with a lot of good world building. Be advised: at times the crimes and themes are grim. The one in the first book is one of the grittiest. GOLDEN is easier. Set in 2061, it’s also entirely of today.
Love this entire series. Even though it is set in the future which I normally would not care for, I eagerly wait for the next in the series to come out. Great characters, plot builds, and very well written.
I can’t believe I’m reading my fiftieth book in this series and never bored.
I loved that I had no idea whodunnit for at least 75% of this book. The author wove all the threads together flawlessly solving this crime. Eve and Roarke still make me sigh, the look, the touches, the little things that show their love and passion. Another brilliant tale in this series, I want more.

As always, JD Robb delivers an outstanding story. I almost hate to see another one come out because I know that I will be up all night reading. She has amazing story lines that are complete page turners
Love all the JD Robb books.
I voluntarily offered to review this book with no obligations and my opinions are honest!
This was a great book !
It all started with a golden egg.
A very lethal golden egg.
In a race against time, Eve has to find the rest of the golden eggs.
Because, you can be sure that there are definitely more than 1 egg.
Love this book.
You can’t go wrong with any of the “In Death” books.
It has all the ingredients that you need for a great book!
I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I recommend this series rocks!! I love the characters in this series. Start reading today!
Love JD Robb
Book 50 and still in love with this series.
Though more sedate and calmer than some previous books, I still had to read it in one sitting, staying up late to do so. This was more to do with the characters than the actual plot story.
Following along was fun as Eve and Peabody chase down information that they know is not right but needs to be done anyway to tie off loose ends.
Very sad and emotional having such innocent deaths. Especially as they turn out to be done by someone very unemotional with the weakest of reasons.
I loved how compassionate people acted in this book to the bereaved families.
Agreed with Eve that Grant deserved worse than what she gets.
Mr Mira was as usual a real sweetheart.
Once again I enjoyed my fix with the In Death crew and loved how Eve and Roarke had quality time together.
These two are truly a solid and strong couple, even with Eve still feeling unbalanced on the monies side of things. The scenes with the pond and the tree show how Eve is maturing into a more rounded person. She still has that edge I love but she is also more open and more able to acknowledge her friendships.
I would just like a bit of dangerous Roarke back every now and then. THE FEAR OF ROARKE when he puts someone in their place, has been absent for a bit too long.
Love her sparring with Summerset, long may they continue.
I would just like more growth and change with the other characters, especially Delia and Ian. (Peabody and McNab). I would settle for Nadine and her rock star going somewhere.
Interesting in that Eve is not having nightmares with the dead talking to her in this book.
Read through my library.
J. D. Robb does it again!
Eve Dallas is my favorite literary character.

Happy 50th Book Birthday, JD Robb/Nora Roberts
It is rare for a book series to get to 50 books. It is even rarer for me to love book 50 as much as book one.
However, that is definitely the case with Golden In Death.
Darling Eve and her Roarke are back, as big and bold as ever. You would think by book 50 that I would be able to have a chance at picking the killer – but nope, even though I had an inkling this time, I was not sure of the whos and whys until Dallas revealed all.
I loved, that even though I love the secondary characters that have come to be family, this time around we are focused on Eve and Roarke – heck, the lovely Mavis only got a mention in this one!
You would think that after all these years and all these stories, I wouldn’t be surprised by the cause of deaths in NYC, however I was as surprised as a first time reader – again.
And now I want to go back and read this series from the beginning – again.
Thank you Ms Roberts for giving us my favourite literary couple.
There is nothing but excellence in the Death series. I’m never disappointed with the characters or the plot. I can’t imagine how Roberts does this. I’ve enjoyed every book in this series and who wouldn’t enjoy Eve, Roarke and crew. Can’t wait to read the next installment.
In typical JD Robb fashion, Eve and Roarke’s 50th (how did that happen?) criminal investigation was full of mystery, intrigue, red herrings, what just happeneds, and the family that Eve and Roarke built.
I’m always amazed how Robb keeps the In Death series fresh and relevant, and Golden is no exception, and I really want to know if her search history is being closely monitored. The murder weapon in this particular book is unique and uniquely terrifying, and the thought of it coming to fruition could cause nightmares.
Working with Peabody, Morris, Feeney and the rest of her team, Dallas leaves no stone unturned, and friends outside the department are drawn in as usual.
Now if I could just have Roarke and an autochef while reading, life would be perfect.
Another great book I have read all 50 in death books by J D ROBB and they are the best thing that I have ever read
Golden in Death is the 50th book in JD Robb’s in Death series featuring the dedicated NYPD lieutenant Eve Dallas and her charismatic Irishman Rourke. When paediatrician Dr Kent Abner is found poisoned by some unknown toxic substance Eve will have her work cut out solving the apparently motiveless murder when, on the surface, the victim had no secrets and was loved and respected by all who knew him. When another body is found, seemingly unconnected to the first will Eve, with the help of the ever stalwart Peabody, finally see a pattern in the deaths?
The plot itself is a story of revenge and intrigue as to where the killer will strike next. The story flows steadily with each step laid out so you can see Eve’s thought process as she gradually puts the pieces together building up to the final confrontation with killer where a game of cat and mouse ensues as she tricks them into revealing all with their lawyers mere bystanders – I’m beginning to think JD Robb has as much use for the legal profession as Eve does. While the plot is slightly dark there is still the humour running through that I have come to expect from this series namely when Eve tries to figure out popular sayings. This one being the meaning behind the phrase ‘get the lead out’.
I have followed this series since the beginning and one of the things I have loved the most is seeing all the characters develop and grow over fifty books. Eve has gone from a solitary loner with possibly only 2 people in her life that she would actually call friends to being a married woman surrounded by a multitude of people from all walks of life who she has come into contact with mainly due to her career. All of whom love and care for her, something she still seems slightly bemused about whenever she thinks about it. We’ve seen Peabody go from a uniformed cop to an aide to a detective in her own right all the time emulating her trainer and she probably has one of the best dialogues in the book when she puts one of the suspects in place for insulting her lieutenant. The baby-faced Truehart and his partner Detective Baxter who I would be quite happy to see get their own book to name but a few.
All in all this book is a fitting tribute to 50 JD Robb novels but if I’m being really honest I have to deduct half a star and that’s because there was no appearance from one of my most favourite characters ever – Mavis!!!!
In this, the 50th book (not counting the odd novella or two) in the long running In Death series, JD Robb shows her amazing ability to keep this series vibrant and oh so very readable.
When a much loved doctor is killed after opening a golden egg he received in the mail and getting a dose of killer nerve agent, Eve and Peabody are assigned the case. They explore every possible option looking for enemies, disgruntled former patients, anyone who might have a motive to kill the doctor. It isn’t until a second Murder occurs that Eve and Peabody catch a break. There’s a link between the two murders. In both cases, the spouse of the victim worked at a prestigious private school called Gold Academy. Several years before the Academy had undergone a major reorganization and purge of staff and students because the previous administrator had run the school like her personal playground. She pressured teachers into sex and possibly also students. She let the rich kids run rampant through the school and never defended the less financially secure students. After she left several of the ringleaders were transferred out to other schools. Eventually Eve comes to understand that this period of time was the crucible in which a twisted plot of revenge was fired up. Someone from that time who thought they could “get away with murder” in their entitled lives now think they can actually do so in real life.
As always, Robb does an amazing job of making the victims real and their families suffering so very difficult to witness. As the story goes along the comparison of those families and their relationships contrasts sharply with the utter lack of humanity in the potential murder suspects. Bringing some of our favorite characters from the past like Charles and Louise in as friends of the first victim adds to the feeling of sorrow. Actually, the supporting characters are one of the strongest parts of the series for me. As each book goes by more people are drawn in and we start caring about them so that when they show up in the book we feel like we know them. I think it’s a testament to Robb’s writing skills that she can keep adding new characters who quickly grab us as readers and who we are happy to see in the next book.
I am a long-time reader and listener of The books in the series. I own all of them In print, digital, and audio form. I reread the entire series every couple of years and still enjoy the books. I keep fearing for a book to come out that tells me the series is losing it’s steam but that is definitely not happening in this book. When I read the books I hear the voices from the amazing Susan Ericksen’s Audio version in my head. I can’t wait to listen to this one.
Bring on # 51!
This was so good! I hate to admit that I have not read a single book in this series before picking up this one. I was a little worried that I might be a little lost jumping into a series at the fiftieth book. I am happy to report that this book does stand on its own and I didn’t feel lost at any point in the story. I am sure that if I had read the previous books in the series, I might have had a deeper understanding and appreciation of the character relationships but the mystery in this book was solid and kept me glued to the pages for the entire book. I really enjoyed the time that I spent reading this book.
The story opens with Dr. Kent Abner receiving a package that would quickly end his life. The package contained a golden egg filled with a nerve gas that killed him within minutes. Lt. Eve Dallas has quite the case on her hands. It seems that everybody loved Dr. Abner and there just aren’t a lot of leads. She keeps asking questions and checking everything hoping to find something. When a second murder occurs, the pieces finally start to come together.
This mystery really kept me guessing. This was a very suspenseful novel and I had a hard time piecing things together before it was revealed within the story. The story definitely took some twists and turns that I didn’t expect and I loved the fact that everything seemed entirely plausible. I also really liked Eve’s approach to solving the case. She doesn’t seem to miss much and is very dedicated to getting justice for the victims.
I really liked the way the book was written. I thought that there was a really great balance between the case and Eve’s personal life which made her feel very real. The pacing was very well done and there was never a point where I felt the desire to set the book aside. I thought that the descriptions were very well done and I almost felt like I was seeing everything Eve was as she worked to piece the case together.
I would recommend this book to others. I thought that this was a very smartly written suspenseful story filled with great characters. I am very glad that I finally decided to give this series a try and now have plans to go back to the beginning and read more of Eve’s adventures.
I received a free ARC of Golden in Death by J.D. Robb from Macmillan in exchange for an honest review.
