But when the dark-eyed beauty responds to his ad, he cannot resist offering her more than … than just a contract to provide him with an heir to his fortune. The use of telegrams was nice. Loved the snowy buffalo herd. The coward stuff was a little wearing. The idea was not really something I think would ever be considered. The very real possibility of dying in childbirth made the idea of a surrogate something maybe more modern than the story. But then again women and men desperate for children is a …
Whew be prepared to cry. This story is so well written that you get pulled into it. And it’s so emotional. I sobbed. I felt though, that the ending was a bit rushed!
Rebecca Hagan Lee has given us a Civil War era story full of depictions of how hard it was for widows and single women of the time. The overwhelming responsibility, the feelings of helplessness, the determination, and sacrifice needed to survive was sometimes unfathomable. That’s where our heroine Faith finds herself. With all the drama and angst …
Good book.
I could not put the book down. I was captivated from the start and held in its grips until the end. I look forward to reading the next book.
Really brought out the plight of women after the civil war
I could totally see something like this happening back in that time.
Faith agrees to marry a stranger and bear him a child for money. The civil war has just ended and her family is destitute. She goes out west to his home. This is a good story of developing relationships and building trust.
I can’t imagine being desperate to do this for money. Guess I am lucky.
Great story,a little sad but happy ending.
You wonder if he’s ever going to get with it. Excellent view of the early problems with alcohol abuse and how it was treated.
Read first few chapters and just put it down. Not interested. Could not like the Hero enough to try to read more.
Well developed characters, great as a stand-alone, but had a hint of future stories featuring the minor characters.
Easy read that could not put down!
Enjoyed reading this book, the characters were interesting and the story plot was very good.
Totally enjoyable!
I would really give this 2 1/2 stars. The H& h drove me nuts with their failure to communicate. What the h was prepared to give up, rather than risk her pride, I can’t imagine it. All comes out okay in the end. The middle is pretty good, but the near end was beyond the belief the author had given us in these characters.
I liked this book and read the others that followed in the series and enjoyed them as well.
It was a good read. Not the most realistic, of course, but it made for a delightful story about post-civil war people and problems in the south.
Easy read couldn’t put book down .
