A Remarkable Woman. An Unforgettable Love Story.
When Dinah Hudson leaves China in 1901, she hopes to leave behind dark memories of violence and sudden death, as well. Spending time with her sister in San Francisco will be just what she needs to help her forget China’s murderous Boxer Uprising. Dinah’s life in California takes an unexpected turn when renowned reformer Donaldina Cameron enlists … Donaldina Cameron enlists her aid in rescuing young Chinese girls smuggled into the U.S. for slavery and prostitution. For Dinah, the venture soon becomes a passionate calling.
But every calling comes with a price, and for Dinah Hudson that price may prove very high indeed.
Because not everyone shares her zeal for freeing enslaved girls, especially not men that profit from human trafficking. Men that hide behind position and power. Faceless men that live in the shadows. Ruthless men that allow nothing and no one to get in their way. Truth is that every man in Dinah’s glittering but treacherous San Francisco world, whether a wealthy financier or a virile policeman or a brash entrepreneur with the face of a Greek god, is suspect. Dangerous. Even deadly. A determined woman must learn that when her heart gets in the way of her good sense she should ignore deceptive emotions and stay focused on the cause. It’s either that. Or die trying.

I didn’t read the first few in this series, but it did not interfere with my enjoyment of this book. It stands alone with a woman who has lived as a missionary kid in China until rescued safely from the Boxer Rebellion. Because of her language skills, she gets involved in helping women who have been caught up in the San Francisco sex trade. The …
My first read by this author. Interesting, held my attention. Emphasis was on Romance, history was secondary. Christian element was an important part of the story.
Good read
I learned a lot about the history of my favorite city, San Francisco, and the plight of Chinese girls there. The characters were interesting and the danger real.
Well written. I love books where I can learn something. I had not considered human trafficking during this time period.
On my ten-best book list. The language in the book is compelling and begs to be read aloud in place.
An American missionary in China is traumatized in the Boxer Rebellion. Dinah survives and escapes, then makes her way to her sister’s home in San Francisco. On the docks there, she recognizes a face from China: a young Chinese girl who appears to be a captive in a group being trafficked. Can Dinah find her, and rescue her?
Her investigations …
Interesting story, great descriptions. A satisfying conclusion. I really enjoyed this book
Historical adventure of an era & topic not usually found in books. Great read.
I loved this book
Very interesting characters and a story well told
An awful lot of words and thoughts and not much plot. Tedious.
Dinah survived the Boxer Rebellion in China in 1901 and then traveled to San Francisco to live with her sister and brother-in-law. When Dinah arrives at the docks, she sees a young Chinese girl that she recognizes, and this is how Dinah learns about the slave trade and prostitution. Dinah volunteers at a home where girls who have been rescued from …
Every book this author writes makes me research and learn more about the time period and events that take place in her excellent and beautifully written stories. Her books are awesome page-turners…Haven’t read one that I haven’t thoroughly enjoyed. I guess my only complaint is that I think her book covers are sometimes (not always!) …
I really liked it.
I didn’t like it. It just wasn’t my type book.8
I love this haunting book about the gold rush days of CA. The Chinese characters were memorable. I like books that cover many years in the lives of the book’s characters. I plan to read it again!
Boring. Too descriptive
Excellent read I enjoyed all of the characters and the writing kept me interested and informed while entertaining me.
