An island beset by the Sea God’s wrath. Once a mighty kingdom, now six provinces torn apart by treacherous barons. In one province, two young lovers strive to stay together when all else prises them apart.
Lissane and Erun must survive to guide their people through the coming storm. The odds are stacked against them. Erun, dreamer and fool, is chosen for a dark path, whilst Lissane is given away … given away by her father the baron to wed the brutal son of a rival ruler. Meanwhile, at the far side of the world, a sorcerer has freed the fire demon, Ashmali, setting off a chain of events that could ultimately bring about Gol’s long foretold ruin.
Caught between rising seas, civil war, and approaching fire, the continent’s time is fast running out. Gol is book one in the forthcoming Legends of Ansu series. Within lies an epic tale of love, hatred, vengeance and destruction. In Gol, the high courage of a few individuals is all that stands against the will of fickle gods and the treachery of men.

This a very entertaining and hard to put down story. There are twists and turns, and so many unexpected things that keep you on the edge of your seat. The characters are wonderful and really jump off of the page.
This was a real page turner. I didn’t want it to end and yet I wanted to get to the end. This author has a great imagination and wrote so I could envision what was happening.
Could hardly put it down. I needed to see what was coming next,
Gol is the story that happens before the events in the Legends of Ansu. There is a lot of world building with many characters whose lives you come to be invested in. They are living through a time of great change, namely the Fall of Gol. It is tragic, brutal, and emotive. It’s epic high fantasy set during an apocalyptic event. Thankfully, the author uses plenty of dry humor to lighten the mood.
As the story unfolds, we meet Lissane Barola, the only child of Baron Barola who isn’t cruel and selfish. Her brothers are a terror and the Baron isn’t any better. She’s a maturing teenager who has fallen in love with a poet a couple of years her senior. At first, I really didn’t like the poet Erun Cade. He starts out as a whiny boy who wants to enjoy life without having to do anything useful. Then things take a turn and Erun is forced to grow up. I fell in love with the mature Erun. My favorite secondary character, who I wanted to read more about, was Red Torrig. He was a very interesting character and so well described that I could picture him well.
I listened to the audio version. It was nice to hear how names are meant to be pronounced. The narrator, Andrew McDermott, did the story justice, although Erun’s petulant voice didn’t change enough as he matured. I also own the eBook as it was free for a short time on Amazon Kindle. This is adult fantasy and not appropriate for sensitive readers. Trigger warnings: there is torture and rape.
Wow I love this! Mr. Webb took the time to write a well written lengthy novel instead of some 300 pages or less book and in doing so wrote an epic fantastic tale with a unique world, well written characters who have you feeling their emotions, twisted plots that keep you wanting to know what is next, epic action and war, some brutality, loyalty and love. I definitely will read the next book in this series . I am truly impressed!
At times I was lost but I think that it was more from the names and which country they belong to. The beginning to each part moved slowly due to all the set up of the events to come. I found that the book and people drew me in and I was invested in the stories and characters.
It was tragic, bloody, earthy, poignant with flawed characters, well described settings strong themes and nothing but disaster in the horizon.
If you like darker themed high fantasy, a complex well woven plot, then you will enjoy this.
Could not get into it.
It was a vile book that needed a mind flush after reading it. The story line would have been just great without all the porn. I could not finish it. Ick!
nope nope nope
Really liked the book, but the author needs to learn to use punctuation, because it was difficult to read.
Great underlying plot and story line. However, the language is a bit coarse with rather blatant sexual treatments and an expressed disregard for any level of commitment to ones partners. It’s too bad because this would have been great without those as distractions.
This book was very long…too many subplots
I was entertained by the story and the characters.
