MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER COP STORYA spate of murders, deranged scientists and heavily armed mercenaries – little wonder there’s a state of panic at Scotland Yard. Chief Inspector Brian Hooley has a plan and it won’t make him popular. He wants to bring back autistic detective Jonathan Roper.Currently suspended on misconduct charges, his condition, coupled with a relentless work-ethic, makes him a … relentless work-ethic, makes him a unique investigator with observational skills that allow him to see what others miss. But he is also a complex man who doesn’t get social boundaries and plenty of his colleagues just don’t like him.
Hooley doesn’t care about that. He knows Roper is the one to make a difference.
What follows is a roller coaster ride with the veteran cop about to find out what it’s like to be the subject of Roper’s unflinching gaze as his personal habits face intense scrutiny. This special relationship is warmly observed and provides a comic contrast to a darkly compelling story where the pair are pushed to the limit.
Going Underground is the first novel in the crime series, Jonathan Roper Investigates.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT GOING UNDERGROUND
“Engaging and suspenseful. I loved the characters, especially the autistic Jonathan Roper and the way his character was developed. I felt involved and as if I were in the middle of the investigation myself. I couldn’t wait to buy the second book in this series and hope there will be more” nansaidh
“From Chief Inspector Hooley to Jonathan, the characters in this book are totally real and completely believable. The bad guys, the science, the special forces chaps, and everyone involved could be in your city. Great story with twists and dips completely unexpected.” starjumper
“I seldom write a book review but this story was so well written and the characters so well developed that I wanted to support the author. I will be purchasing the second book in this series and look forward to more adventures with these two detectives.” patcats
“JUST WOW. I’m always on the lookout for a new author who writes “old school” crime thrillers…. you know the kind I mean – great characters, well researched, good plot and a twist to keep you hooked. This author ticks ALL the boxes. Jonathan Roper is a great character, very believable to anyone who knows anyone on the autism spectrum but he’s not overplayed. Loved book 1, just bought book 2.” Pat
“A fast paced story, likeable characters, great plot twists and turns. Really enjoyed the addition of Jonathon Roper to the cast. Loved trying to follow his reasoning. A real page turner. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.” Verified Amazon customer.
“Excellent book. The portrayal of the autistic main character was quite good. Being autistic I thoroughly enjoyed reading a realistic expression of how we react to the world. The story was also very good and it kept your attention. Hope to read many more stories about this character.” Susie
“I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story line was very good, but what really kept me engaged was the quirky, but relatable, character Jonathan Roper. Lots of humorous interactions between him and his boss. After the first few pages, I couldn’t put it down. Getting ready to read the next book in the series now. Keep them coming. I love this guy.” BG Lewis
“This is spectacularly good. The autistic detective is a wonderful character and the writing is very well crafted. I hope to see more of these. Great work, Michael Leese!” John

Original hero, with some surprise plot twists.
Loved it!!!
I liked these characters and want to see more of them
I like stories with more action, so this didn’t meet that.
There isn’t enough written about differently brained people, and this book read true, giving you the viewpoint and motivation of someone with Aspergers. It isn’t cute or condescending, but gives a true picture of the way the mind works. My friends daughter has a similar brain, and although she’s a lot more social, she has similar skills, including the ability to read any book she’s ever read in her head. . The story was fast moving, believable while also being cutting edge, and I immediately downloaded the next book in the series.
Fun to think of bigger possibilities for some of the autistic children I worked with at the grade school level. Author defined well the strengths and quirks of his character.
My son has autism, and I really liked the way the author presented both the challenges and strengths of the protagonist’s condition.
Great story
This book has characters you really hate (as you are supposed to). They get in the way. They obstruct. They piss you off. But the protagonists prevail anyway. Good read!
This one was so good, I bought the second in the series.
densely constructed and unpredictable
I love the British police/thriller/spy genre and thoroughly enjoyed Going Underground by Michael Leese. Leese’s autistic-spectrum investigator, Jonathan Roper and insightful DCI Brian Holley develop an engaging partnership as they unravel an evil crime ring. This book is the first in a series, I was happy to learn, and I’ll be reading them all.
Great read!!
great characters and different from the norm. Gets one into the story wanting more. Our autistic hero leads us down roads one wouldn’t expect. didn’t not it to end.
EXCELLENT READ.
Great read! Absolutely love the way it was wrote.
Michael Leese has created a character with autism who is brilliant but very quirky. One man, a colleague, ‘gets’ him and helps him navigate the world as they investigate crimes deemed worthy of the special investigations unit. This is the second book in the series and I eagerly await his next book. If you have an autistic child in your family or in your acquaintences, this will explain a lot.
The concept of a neuro-atypical detective is intriguing, and I was looking forward to reading the book. Unfortunately, the editing was atrocious – not just simple typos but haphazardly-written run-on sentences, incomplete thoughts, and odd word choices. I wouldn’t normally persist with a book this poorly executed but the characters really do interact well together. The story wasn’t outstanding but it served its purpose of showing off the talents of Detective Roper.
I like the incorporation of autistic detective because it shows how marvelous their brains work. It’s a page turner and I cannot wait to read what comes next after “Going Underground”
Good characters, interesting story but not riveting.
