MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER COP STORYA spate of murders, deranged scientists and heavily armed mercenaries – little wonder there’s a state of panic at Scotland Yard. Chief Inspector Brian Hooley has a plan and it won’t make him popular. He wants to bring back autistic detective Jonathan Roper.Currently suspended on misconduct charges, his condition, coupled with a relentless work-ethic, makes him a … relentless work-ethic, makes him a unique investigator with observational skills that allow him to see what others miss. But he is also a complex man who doesn’t get social boundaries and plenty of his colleagues just don’t like him.
Hooley doesn’t care about that. He knows Roper is the one to make a difference.
What follows is a roller coaster ride with the veteran cop about to find out what it’s like to be the subject of Roper’s unflinching gaze as his personal habits face intense scrutiny. This special relationship is warmly observed and provides a comic contrast to a darkly compelling story where the pair are pushed to the limit.
Going Underground is the first novel in the crime series, Jonathan Roper Investigates.
Buy this brilliant, fast paced thriller today. But be warned, don’t start reading if you want an early night.
If you like Sherlock, the Mentalist, Elementary or David Baldacci’s Amos Decker, you will adore Going Underground and Jonathan Roper.
WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT GOING UNDERGROUND
“Engaging and suspenseful. I loved the characters, especially the autistic Jonathan Roper and the way his character was developed. I felt involved and as if I were in the middle of the investigation myself. I couldn’t wait to buy the second book in this series and hope there will be more” nansaidh
“From Chief Inspector Hooley to Jonathan, the characters in this book are totally real and completely believable. The bad guys, the science, the special forces chaps, and everyone involved could be in your city. Great story with twists and dips completely unexpected.” starjumper
“I seldom write a book review but this story was so well written and the characters so well developed that I wanted to support the author. I will be purchasing the second book in this series and look forward to more adventures with these two detectives.” patcats
“JUST WOW. I’m always on the lookout for a new author who writes “old school” crime thrillers…. you know the kind I mean – great characters, well researched, good plot and a twist to keep you hooked. This author ticks ALL the boxes. Jonathan Roper is a great character, very believable to anyone who knows anyone on the autism spectrum but he’s not overplayed. Loved book 1, just bought book 2.” Pat
“A fast paced story, likeable characters, great plot twists and turns. Really enjoyed the addition of Jonathon Roper to the cast. Loved trying to follow his reasoning. A real page turner. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.” Verified Amazon customer.
“Excellent book. The portrayal of the autistic main character was quite good. Being autistic I thoroughly enjoyed reading a realistic expression of how we react to the world. The story was also very good and it kept your attention. Hope to read many more stories about this character.” Susie
“I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story line was very good, but what really kept me engaged was the quirky, but relatable, character Jonathan Roper. Lots of humorous interactions between him and his boss. After the first few pages, I couldn’t put it down. Getting ready to read the next book in the series now. Keep them coming. I love this guy.” BG Lewis
“This is spectacularly good. The autistic detective is a wonderful character and the writing is very well crafted. I hope to see more of these. Great work, Michael Leese!” John

Jonathan Roper is autistic and it’s really hard for him to make friends, but I like how he assembled the strange clues to make sense of this crime. With Detective Chief Inspector Brian Hooley of Scotland Yard, helping Jonathan they are a good team and sometimes a difficult colleague.
I wasn’t sure if I would like to listen to this audiobook but gave it a chance and I’m glad I did.
Incredible story/series!! Nothing like it!! Anxiously anticipating his next book!!!!
I have finished the first two books in this series and am 1/2 way through the third. I just found out that there is a fourth and ordered it. I really enjoy that the Autistic Detective’s behaviors are not made to seem silly. I also like the way that he has bonded with the other detective, while still keeping a distance. I hope that Mr Leese keeps writing.
DCI Chief Inspector Brian Hooley and Jonathan Roper (autistic, Sherlock Holmes kind of character) solve a baffling case involving cancer research and live extending research
Kept interest going. Would read another book by this author
I have only found 2 books and a short story by Michael Leese. A wonderfully original concept and two very engaging characters. Going Underground was the first book in the series and upon finishing it I immediately read the second book followed by the short story. I learned a few things about English police procedurals. I loved the balance that DCI Brian Hooley provided for autistic and brilliant Inspector Jonathan Roper. This was a fast moving story and a very enjoyable read.
One of the best books I’ve read this year and I have read many. Jonathan Roper is a unique character and the interaction between he and his mentor made the book work for me. I also loved the second book and am keeping my fingers crossed for more.
I love the characters in this series, one of the best.
I like the premise of the autistic detective, but I had a hard time keeping track of the characters. They weren’t well defined.
Excellent read- highly recommend!
Very well done
Enjoyed this book and look forward to the the next adventure with Roper
enjoyed very much.
It’s good to read about heroes on the autism spectrum and how their coworkers navigate their assets.
I am a big Sherlock Holmes fan and Roper has those same quirky insights into finding clues and putting together the puzzle.
Great plot line
A VERY ENJOYABLE AND SMOOTH READ. JUST ENOUGH TWISTS TO KEEP THE STORY MOVING WITHOUT HAVING TO THINK BACK ON WHAT WAS HAPPENING BEFORE THE STORY TOOK A NEW TURN. ONE OF THE MORE ENJOYABLE STORIES OUTSIDE MY NORMAL READS.
Pretty good story, but needed editing. Lots of typos, etc.
Extremely intelligent young man with no social skills is called back to the Met (Metropolitian Police) to help solve a murder. Along the lines of Monk.
A very interesting premise, creating a character who has a medical condition that doesn’t give them superpowers but does make for creative plot twists. Well drawn descriptions of the “underworld”. Definitely keeps moving and, while I usually figure out the plot by mid-book, this one threw me a curve.
I love the Roper character and the setting of this book. England is one of my favorite vacation spots and when I get to recognize locations, it is a fun addition to the read. The development of a character who is on the autistic spectrum is a great addition to the mystery and drama.
