MORE THAN JUST ANOTHER COP STORYA spate of murders, deranged scientists and heavily armed mercenaries – little wonder there’s a state of panic at Scotland Yard. Chief Inspector Brian Hooley has a plan and it won’t make him popular. He wants to bring back autistic detective Jonathan Roper.Currently suspended on misconduct charges, his condition, coupled with a relentless work-ethic, makes him a … relentless work-ethic, makes him a unique investigator with observational skills that allow him to see what others miss. But he is also a complex man who doesn’t get social boundaries and plenty of his colleagues just don’t like him.
Hooley doesn’t care about that. He knows Roper is the one to make a difference.
What follows is a roller coaster ride with the veteran cop about to find out what it’s like to be the subject of Roper’s unflinching gaze as his personal habits face intense scrutiny. This special relationship is warmly observed and provides a comic contrast to a darkly compelling story where the pair are pushed to the limit.

WHAT READERS ARE SAYING ABOUT GOING UNDERGROUND
“Engaging and suspenseful. I loved the characters, especially the autistic Jonathan Roper and the way his character was developed. I felt involved and as if I were in the middle of the investigation myself. I couldn’t wait to buy the second book in this series and hope there will be more” nansaidh
“From Chief Inspector Hooley to Jonathan, the characters in this book are totally real and completely believable. The bad guys, the science, the special forces chaps, and everyone involved could be in your city. Great story with twists and dips completely unexpected.” starjumper
“I seldom write a book review but this story was so well written and the characters so well developed that I wanted to support the author. I will be purchasing the second book in this series and look forward to more adventures with these two detectives.” patcats
“JUST WOW. I’m always on the lookout for a new author who writes “old school” crime thrillers…. you know the kind I mean – great characters, well researched, good plot and a twist to keep you hooked. This author ticks ALL the boxes. Jonathan Roper is a great character, very believable to anyone who knows anyone on the autism spectrum but he’s not overplayed. Loved book 1, just bought book 2.” Pat
“A fast paced story, likeable characters, great plot twists and turns. Really enjoyed the addition of Jonathon Roper to the cast. Loved trying to follow his reasoning. A real page turner. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.” Verified Amazon customer.
“Excellent book. The portrayal of the autistic main character was quite good. Being autistic I thoroughly enjoyed reading a realistic expression of how we react to the world. The story was also very good and it kept your attention. Hope to read many more stories about this character.” Susie
“I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The story line was very good, but what really kept me engaged was the quirky, but relatable, character Jonathan Roper. Lots of humorous interactions between him and his boss. After the first few pages, I couldn’t put it down. Getting ready to read the next book in the series now. Keep them coming. I love this guy.” BG Lewis
“This is spectacularly good. The autistic detective is a wonderful character and the writing is very well crafted. I hope to see more of these. Great work, Michael Leese!” John

I like Sherlock Holmes and this reminded me of his way of deduction
I enjoyed the concept , brillanient use of exta ordinary people .
I thought it was good. It portrayed a different view of a person with autism. It showed that there is a good spot for them in society.
Enjoyable read. Liked the new type of detective. Good story that flowed well. I’m looking forward to the next one.
I’m looking forward to reading more.
intriguing protagonist, interesting setting. Good story
I love British police procedural stories and this was very very good based on the brilliant but awkward “consultant” working with the police. Fast paced, with twists and turns like a mountain road……………….
GOOD
I enjoyed this new type of character that Michael Leese has introduced in Going Under Ground. The two detectives seem to balance each other while working together to solve a very difficult crime. I look forward to reading the next book.
I read the first short chapter and was gobsmacked by what happened….so I snuggled in to read more.
Jonathan Roper is autistic and working with the British police under detective Hooley. He is back and on a case of the missing Sir James….a very rich, widowed gentleman that retired and started donating his money to charities.
Jonathan may not be able to “read” people but he is excellent with clues. Hooley is his mentor, helping Jonathan deal with people and situations. Their partnership is unique and very real.
All of the characters are quickly but realistically portrayed. The case is a like a thinking maze of many small clues but all the more interesting as Jonathan explains his boxes of colors…all in his head….where he deciphers the clues.
The case becomes intense as people go missing, a torso is found, Jonathan is threatened and the bad guys seem to have inside information. The descriptions of the homes, the people and their lives takes you there…you are sipping the tea, looking at hidden rooms, fearing the unknown, and hoping to solve the case.
Cancer treatments, cell research, offshore companies, military, all take part in this mystery and flow together and meld into a tight plot. You root for Jonathan and Hooley and are gasping as something from that first chapter is introduced into this case.
May the author continue the relationship between Hooley and Jonathan Roper!!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had a unique story line and a very original concept in a leading character as an autistic detective. A truly brilliant piece of work. I look forward to reading more of this author’s work.
