Lisa Tawn Bergren offers young readers ages 3-7 a newly-published and wonderfully enchanting Bible storybook. GOD GAVE US THE BIBLE: 45 Favorite Stories for Little Ones tells familiar Bible stories in a short enough but easily understood manner so that young children won’t get restless and lose interest in what is being read. With the adorable, full-color illustrations by David Hohn, Ms. Bergren tells each story through the ‘voice’ of Mama Bear, with interruptions from Little Cub and her friends asking questions about the story Mama Bear just read to them, just like little children do. Her answers to their questions are Biblical and easy to understand. The hardcover copy is heavy and the inside pages are printed on thicker paper, making it able to hold up through many years’ worth of page-turning, I wish it had come with a bookmark ribbon to be able to find the stopping place easier next time the book is read. I highly recommend this adorably endearing Bible story book to anyone who enjoys reading to their youngsters.
I received a complimentary copy from the author but was under no reviewing obligation and this is my honest opinion of the book.
I know some parents might be seeking an excellent book for their children. Are you seeking a way to identify Gods story to little one? Well this book, God Gave Us the Bible as a few favorite stories. It a good one and well done.
The stories are brief but mean full. They may allow the children asking some questions about the bible or the meaning of the story. This book retains characters that display this though animals with a Mama bear and a few forest animal kids. I like this concept and could understand it. The stories are not in depth of the Bible, but it gives the children or animal kids in the book to ask about a b meaning of a word or prase. Mama explains them try to provide them an answer that they would understand.
The pictures are effectively put together. I enjoy looking them, and they did tell the story. I was able to read this book in one sitting. I had to take a break when I was going an appointment. I finished the same day as I started it. If I did not have to go any where and launched this at home, I would completed reading it in one sitting.
This book does teach you some lessons and the story of Christ though the eyes of little cubs. Parents should think to put this on their bookshelves for their children or grandchildren. Good for children of juvenile readers.
God Gave Us the Bible: 45 Favorite Stories for Little Ones is an abridged bible anthology written as a narrative by Lisa Tawn Bergren and illustrated by David Hohn. I received my copy of the book God Gave Us the Bible: 45 Favorite Stories for Little Ones by Lisa Tawn Bergren free as part of the Waterbrook & Mutnomah Launch team for an honest review.
My first thought the day that it came in the mail was…charming. The beginning of the book uses adorable animal illustrations to create a setting of a mama bear hosting a sleepover for her little cub and his friends. She calls them into the house for a story and reads to them from her bible, telling them that God’s word is actually our story because He gave his word to His children because He loved them, the same way He loves us, His children, today.
I am pleased with the entire book, but I particularly like the way that Bergren relates the bible as a book for all ages at the start of her story instead of just jumping into the bible stories with no other introduction than the bible chapter names. With her illustrations and soft beginning, the book is more enticing for young readers.
I have read many other children’s abridged bible story collections and often they fall short in two ways. either they are too short without enough details or they go overboard with vocabulary and plot that is so deep that a child might as well read the original text. Bergren has found a happy medium with her format. She tells enough of the story to be factual and accurate while adding in some commentary that covers thoughts and observations a child might have when hearing God’s word.
Another part that I liked about her book is how she defines certain bible vocabulary that children and even some adults that are not well versed in the bible might find confusing. For example, on page 108, Bergren explains the word parable this way, “”What’s a parable?” Little Moose asked.” “It’s a kind of story that Jesus used to help his followers understand truth,” Mama said “And it helps us understand God better too.”” That way not only does the child gain information, so does the parent. There are several excerpts like this throughout her book.
Another example is on page 115. Here Bergren explains the story from Luke 18 where Jesus teaches the lesson that to enter the kingdom of heaven you must be like a little child. Little Pup asks the mother bear what it means to be like a little child? The mother bear responds “”Well, what are kids like? Most are curious, open and loving, right? Full of faith and joy like you,” She said. “Kids trust that things will work out. It’s harder to be like that when you’re a grown-up. Jesus’s reminder is a good one for us adults.””
Finally Mama bear explains who God’s word is really a neverending story because it is the living word that lives on through Jesus and the Holy Spirit that puts it in our hearts.
I wholeheartedly recommend Bergren’s book and encourage anyone with young children, grandchildren or any other little ones in their life to share God’s message through a wonderful book.

God Gave Us the Bible, 45 Favorite Stories for Little Ones is a 159 page hard cover book for children up to age 8. Author Lisa Tawn Bergren and artist David Hohn have done a remarkable job bringing the Bible stories to little ones. This book is adorable and has a multitude of wonderful stories to teach children.
The book has Mama Bear telling stories from the Bible to Little Cub and his friends, moose, owl, skunk, raccoon, wolf, goose, and otter. “I want to share a story with you. The best story ever!” Mama begins with creation and goes through to Jesus’ death and resurrection ending with Paul’s spreading of the gospel. All of the stories are told so that they might be understood. The children even interrupt Mama to ask questions. How true to form!
Stories are told and explained so that children will understand them. The illustrations are delightful and children will certainly enjoy them. This book is made to teach young ones the Bible on their level. It is a remarkable offering that will become a favorite “read that story again” book.
One of my favorite things about this endearing book is that Mama Bear reiterates that these are true stories that actually happened. It is vital we teach this to our children and this book is an excellent start. I also loved the mix of Old and New Testament stories.
I am in love with this book! Every child should be given one. Unfortunately that won’t happen. It would make a beneficial addition to Sunday School Classes and Christian Schools and Daycares. This would make a treasured shower, baby, or birthday gift, and don’t forget Christmas. It gets a 5 out of 5 star rating from me. A copy was provided by the Publisher but these are my honest thoughts.
