It takes nerve and skill — as well as heart — to write mysteries like this. ‘Glass Houses,’ along with many of the other Gamache books, is so compelling that, for the space of reading it, you may well feel that much of what’s going on in the world outside the novel is ‘just noise.’” —Maureen Corrigan, The Washington Post
When a mysterious figure appears in Three Pines one cold November day, Armand Gamache and the rest of the villagers are at first curious. Then wary. Through rain and sleet, the figure stands unmoving, staring ahead.
From the moment its shadow falls over the village, Gamache, now Chief Superintendent of the Sûreté du Québec, suspects the creature has deep roots and a dark purpose. Yet he does nothing. What can he do? Only watch and wait. And hope his mounting fears are not realized.
But when the figure vanishes overnight and a body is discovered, it falls to Gamache to discover if a debt has been paid or levied.
Months later, on a steamy July day as the trial for the accused begins in Montréal, Chief Superintendent Gamache continues to struggle with actions he set in motion that bitter November, from which there is no going back. More than the accused is on trial. Gamache’s own conscience is standing in judgment.
In Glass Houses, her latest utterly gripping book, number-one New York Times bestselling author Louise Penny shatters the conventions of the crime novel to explore what Gandhi called the court of conscience. A court that supersedes all others.

I LOVE the inspector! The story is very well told with good dialogue and chemistry between the characters.
Inspector Gamache and his working companions face seemingly insurmountable challenges with internal police corruption. This intense drama is tied skillfully to the homey, quirky small town in Quebec where the Inspector and his wife live. Cozy. Twisted but very satisfying plot.
I have read all Louise Penny’s Inspector Gamache books and especially like this one.
Not only does Louise Penny create compelling stories, but her writing and style are among the best out there. I enjoy the development of the characters book by book. This one was a bit darker than the previous novels, but no less in quality.
The latest in her Gamache series. If you havent read any yet I suggest you start with her first Gamache book Still Life. You will not be disappointed.
Another nail-biter in the fabulous Armand Gamache Series (# 13)! If you plan to read more than one of these delicious Louise Penney novels (and you definitely should!), they are best read in order, because of parts of one building on the previous book. I could never choose which is my favorite because I’ve loved them all! I’m eagerly awaiting (and have pre-ordered # 14).
All of these books are wonderful reads and Inspector Gamache is a great complex character.
Love the Gamache series!
Superbly written.
Because of the two time periods it was difficult to keep up with. Had to read it a second time to understand.
Best yet in the series.
Another Inspector Gamache quality offering; a favorite!
Louise Penny never disappoints.
I love following the recurring characters in all her novels. Her characters evolve and change. I love the village and all its inhabitants. I also like the continuing fight against corruption in the police world.
this writer can’t write books fast enough for me to be eternally happy. I have read all the Inspector Gamache books and absolutely am in love with Penny’s writing style
Louise Penny can do no wrong, nor write any wrong!
I love the characters in Louis Penny’s books. The location is magical and having worked on the Canadian-Vermont border dear to my heart.
First one of her books that I didn’t enjoy or finish. The pace was too slow and she’s overdoing pushing her liberal agenda. Spare me.
Classic Louise Penny. She gets better with each new book. Clever, funny, deep, intrigueing. Wonderful, lovingly watm deep, intelligent characters.
L. Penny is one of my favorite and this book did not dissapoint
