Margaret Lashley has created a truly believable central character in Val Fremden. Her life is a mess but she doggedly continues onwards. The author likens her heroine to Stephanie Plum by Janet Evanovich, a tough comparison to make and one which too many authors are already using. Margaret pulls it off though, winding together a mystery with a hearty helping of humor. I loved it, and read the whole thing in one sitting which included taking a bath and staying in it until it went cold to finish the book. Get this book now and you will have a whole series to power through.
Cozy Murder and Red-Neck Humor
I loved this book. While it in keeping with the prequel, it is filled with Red-Neck humor of the Florida kind. This author weaves an intricate plot filled with unforgettable characters. I would have never guessed the ending, at that was the best part of all!
I laughed so hard I almost peed my pants. My family asked why are you laughing so many times the 4 year olds think it’s my actual name. I even found myself laughing out loud when just remembering a line Val would say or a turn of phrase used in the books.
It’s really great how much better you feel after laughing a good 5-10 minutes.
A hug for the soul
I have read a lot of good books lately. This one tops it all. Mostly I read humorous books. I don´t read sad at all. That said. And I might not be able to say this without spoilers! One part of this story is so sad it is traumatic. And I have no idea how the author is able to write traumatic in a way that is also one part hopeful and uplifting. What ever it is, it is beautiful. Tragically beautiful. But that is life for you I guess. So yes, this is so very far from the books I usually read. Have no idea how I found this book, but am glad I did. While the story is advertised for it´s humor it is more about the underdogs in life. So more about kicks to the gut. The humor in the story is of course good, but far from the best part of it. In many ways this is the best self help book you can read, it has heartwarming acceptance of self, shows you strength in all it´s glory and will teach you to breath. This is also a seriously awesome mystery, with turns and twists that will keep to glued to the book till the end. And then wanting more. The storytelling is flawless and the characters perfect in their humanity. The story is that gripping it had caught me before I realized the story wasn´t a comedy. And I don´t do serious. Can I recommend the story more?
A fun read with original characters. Great way to spend a few hours.
A really delightful book. Margaret’s characters, her plot development, her twists and her great humor were all impressive. Glad One was fresh and innovative. Original and very engaging. Loved it.
Loved this first book in the Val Fremden Mystery series. Great mix of mystery, humor, and romance. Great characters, great mystery, and great humor to lighten things up. Look forward to more of this series; sure hope to see more of Val, Tom, and the pals she’s nicknamed the three stooges, Winky, Jorge, and Goober.
A hilarious fun romp.
Crazy zany characters to fall in love with. Comic writing style full of laugh-out loud sarcasm. Fantastic ending. Great series kickoff.
Great read! The ending blew me away. Looking forward to reading more about Valiant’s ironically funny and charmed life
Oftentimes, humor is the best medicine.
A must read. I found myself laughing aloud many times. Make sure you read the whole series. You will get some laughs along the way.
If you are looking for a fun, light mystery read then you must read this book. I love mysteries and sometimes I want something that isn’t so suspenseful and this hit the mark.
A thoroughly enjoyable read. Loved it and the test of the series.
AMAZING. What a great story. I love the characters. Can’t wait to read more about Val. She is terrific
I got this book on a whim, and I’m glad I did. Val, the main character, is not your usual 20 something, drop dead gorgeous person, but in her late 40’s. This in itself got me interested. But, it’s also one of the funniest books I have read. I like Janet Evanovich a lot, but Stephanie keeps doing the same stupid things, as well as indecisive regarding Joe and Ranger. Margaret Lashleys books, as well as her newsletter, and Facebook page, are hilarious and the people are realistic and believable, making real time/real world decisions
Do yourself a favor pick up one of Ms Lashley’s books. I guarantee you won’t want to put it down..
I laughed so much reading this, it was great!
I am planning to read the entire series. So far, I have read 4 of them! I enjoy the little life lessons embedded in the books. They are humorous too. Some scenarios may seem “far-fetched”, but that makes the books even more fun to read if the reader will open her/his mind. I like the setting of the books too (St. Petersburg, Florida and the Tampa Bay Area).
A delightful unique read I think you’ll enjoy. I look forward to reading more by this author!
This tale is full of twists and turns. The characters are vividly described. I liked them all – except the villainous ones, of course. The plot is carefully crafted. This story really makes you think. The Florida senior citizens you meet are not the usual ones. There were several laugh out loud moments. Very enjoyable.
