This book had some great parts. There was a fair amount of scientific background related to child psychosis, but I found it interesting. There is no question, as some other reviewers have pointed out, that Tom is an irritating character. I struggled with Cat’s response to his reaction several times but did stick with the story until the end. The concept was great, but the delivery didn’t quite reach the level I was hoping for as a knock it out-of-the-ballpark psychological thriller. 3.5 stars.
This book was a definite page turner. Unexpected ending. I didn’t want the book to end.
You will Never guess!
That was an edge of my seat, “Why can’t she narrate Faster?!” kind of book! I thought I knew, but I totally Didn’t!
It was ok.
I couldn’t get through this book. I felt no sympathy for the protagonist, and all the other characters seemed out to get her. Too many characters and subplots.
What should you do when a strange child (who is apparently the result of a casual encounter between your husband and a woman he met in a pub) turns up at your home and your husband wants to make her part of the family?
Ruby is an enigmatic pre-teen whose mother has just died in mysterious circumstances. When she joins Cat’s family, strange and disturbing things start to happen. Cat wants Ruby out of the house. But her husband Tom, her putative father, wants Ruby to stay. Cat’s and Tom’s daughter Freya, previously a loving, happy and straightforward little girl, becomes increasingly withdrawn.
So are some children born wicked, or do they have wickedness thrust upon them? What is Ruby’s agenda? Maybe Ruby doesn’t have an agenda and Cat is just being paranoid about a set of harmless coincidences?
This is a nail-biting read that kept me hooked.
A gripping thriller, creepy with twists and turns.
Really enjoyed this story. Highly recommend
I finished this in two days — couldn’t put it down!
Very original plot with well developed and believable story line. The main characters face such an unpredictable, haunting dilemma that
you can’t put it down. Makes you constantly question what you yourself would do if you were in this
scary, convoluted situation.
Good book…unexpected ending
Slow. Never got interested. Finally quit forcing myself to read it.
Kept me reading late into the night.
This book reminds society what lengths a woman will go to protect her child.
Nice story and interesting characters. It was a little hard to believe the development of one character from “good ” to “bad.” But otherwise pretty good.
very suspenseful. hard to put down.
Interesting but just not believable enough. I did finish it but wouldn’t really recommend to others.
Good read that keeps you guessing almost to the end.
I enjoyed this book. It was different because it was set in England so the usual child protective services were different from what I know about in the United States. There were a few twists and turns, but over-all, it was a good read.
Good read, you never know anyone completely even if you think you do.
