The New York Times bestselling novel by the author of Remarkable Creatures and The Last Runaway Translated into thirty-nine languages and made into an Oscar-nominated film, starring Scarlett Johanson and Colin Firth
Tracy Chevalier transports readers to a bygone time and place in this richly-imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer’s most celebrated paintings.
… inspired one of Vermeer’s most celebrated paintings.
History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius . . . even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

Sad but true happenings of the time. Was so I,pressed that I even bought a hand bag and shoes with the girl with pearl on them. Have many people ask about the origin of the girl with a pear earring. Loved the movie as well
I didn’t know much about painting or the painter. This book vividly painted the times, the people, and the culture. The book was so good that the movie mostly stayed true to the book.
A great book! Interesting & informative.
Good book
How often have you looked at a picture and wondered what the story was behind it? Tracy Chevalier has done just that in this book. “The Girl with the Pearl Earring” comes to life as we read the story of the girl in the picture and the artist who painted. This is indeed an unusual storyline, and I loved it.
Anytime i can appreciate the characters through the author’s eyes it means to me that one – the author is good and two- i trust that the facts also can be believed.
Excellent story. Felt like you were there.
I enjoyed the story line very much! It was an easy read.
This was an excellent book that I still think about occasionally.
Classic, don’t miss reading
Read this a while back but enjoyed the story.
Nothing else she has written is as good.
I loved it.
I learned a lot about Vermeer
It has been some time since reading this but it was one that was difficult to put down.
Not enough There there.
A most enjoyable fictional look into the past and the story behind this famous painting and painter.
Well done. Loved this book.
I aslo have seen the movie, several times. As one who trained to be an artist but had to turn to the everyday world to provide for a family, I’m always on the look out for anything to do with the great artists. Vermeer gave an intensity of observation that benefits the viewer long after they have turned toward more pressing things. The book was also an exercise in intensity of observation of a facinating time in history when the world was subject to astonishing concepts such as the value of flowers. Yet as mad as the dutch were over tulips mankind still is capable of astonishing duplicity ala Bernie Madoff and the world wide craze for bundled mortgages. Flim Flam is alive in the world.
loved reading about what may have really happened.
