… inspired one of Vermeer’s most celebrated paintings.
History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius . . . even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

When I started reading this book I did not think I would like it, but then the characters began to be” real”. Enjoyed it tremendously
Great book. I like most books having to do with the Art world.
A wonderful imagining the facts behind the masterpiece. Great sense of time and place.
A historical novel about the famous painter and day to day life in Amsterdam, this book has mystery and vivid characters. The interplay between servants and masters evolves into a love story set in the fascinating ordinary 17th century customs and scenes.
Along with pretty much everyone who has read this book, I loved it. The feeling that you are there as Vermeer creates his works, particularly this one, is overarching. As an art historian minor in college it brought Vermeer’s times to life.
Read it several years ago with my book club. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
A must read, very well written. Read it a long time ago and it has stuck with me.
Read several years ago and still remember it. It was filled with realism about the artist and his muse plus allowed me to become a companion reader with a local detective who enjoyed the same books.
Very good.
A masterpiece.
Although it has been several years since I read this book, I still remember it fondly and have subsequently read other books by Chevalier.
A truly wonderful novel!
Got a wonderful look inside an era, a country, and a famous painter. Very good reading.
Beautifully written.
Everyone else loved this book so much a movie was made of it, so my quibbles are obviously of little import. I found it to be simplistic and not very interesting.
I really enjoyed the book. I read it several years ago, before the movie came out. I was fascinated by the procedure of creating the oil paints for Vermeer and the definite feelings of attraction between the young girl and the Master. It was so clear that she was helpless in the stalking done by his patron, her position was making me feel uncomfortable for her, and I must say I enjoyed it very much. I think I read it twice and recommended it to others. It made me want to learn more about Vermeer and his work. How few there were!
Loved it,better than the movie!
Tracy Chevalier masterfully accomplishes the difficult job of creating the atmosphere and long ago world of Vermeer.
Historical fictiom well written.
It has been several years since I read “Girl with a Pearl Earring” but I remember being fascinated by the historical data, the setting and the characters. It is a richly written story of a famous painting and the characters that were involved in its making. This led me to read more of this type of genre as well as all of Tracy Cs books. A wonderful read
