The New York Times bestselling novel by the author of Remarkable Creatures and The Last Runaway Translated into thirty-nine languages and made into an Oscar-nominated film, starring Scarlett Johanson and Colin Firth
Tracy Chevalier transports readers to a bygone time and place in this richly-imagined portrait of the young woman who inspired one of Vermeer’s most celebrated paintings.
… inspired one of Vermeer’s most celebrated paintings.
History and fiction merge seamlessly in this luminous novel about artistic vision and sensual awakening. Girl with a Pearl Earring tells the story of sixteen-year-old Griet, whose life is transformed by her brief encounter with genius . . . even as she herself is immortalized in canvas and oil.

I couldn’t put it down! Fast read. Very interesting. Fictional story based on facts.
It was an ok book. I prefer a faster paced story. Did like the ending.
We will never know the actual story behind this painting, but this story is very plausible and very informative about the artist and the times
The author’s style of writing puts you right there with the characters in the book. Great read !!!!
So atmospheric; great insights into the mind of an artist and life in 17th century Netherlands
Interesting story based on a painting
Beautifully written, very well researched
Another great history lesson.
An okay book but I don’t see it as the best seller it was/is.
Loved descriptive passages of life of lesser known characters from life of well known artists.
As lovely and atmospheric as a Vermeer.
I enjoy Historical Fiction and found the book fascinating to read. Have recommended it to several people.
Enjoyed recommend
Great story
Wonderful and unforgettable. I have read all of Tracy Chevalier’s books. You learn about history and every book has a romantic aspect.
Beautifully written!
This author brings the period and people alive. Hard to stop reading once you begin.
The book is about a Dutch painter, his life, his family and his paintings. It is interesting to read about the time in history during which the artist lived and worked. It also gives the reader a clear sense of how this (and other) artists made a living, as well as the living conditions under which they had to survive. My book club looked at art books to see what other works this artist had painted. We even travelled to art museums to view his works, as well as some of his contemporary artists. The descriptions of their family life was interesting to learn about, knowing that painters who were his contemporaries might have lived their lives in similar situations … Excellent!
Spellbinding!
This creates the world of Van Meer through the eyes of a young girl. Beautiful writing and extraordinary character building.
