The thing that drew me to this book was how it sounded like there was a lot of traditional mythological elements to it, and it sounded intriguing. I really did like that it tried to incorporate the Japanese mythology to it, but at times it did get a bit overwhelming with how many different things were being thrown at you. In general, it was just a bit… meh. I’m not sure that I could say exactly what it was that fell flat for me. It was a good read, but I’m not all that fussed about carrying on. If I don’t want to jump straight on to the next one then, that’s generally a sign for me.
Wow, what a different kind of story. The inclusion of Japanese folklore is brilliant in this story and the action keeps you turning the pages, until you get to the end and realize you have to wait for the next book to find out what’s next. That’s ok the story is just too good to not want to read the next book. The romance in this one in simmering but its like a spark waiting to catch fire, who knows maybe there will be more in the next book.
I received an ARC of this story and have voluntarily chosen to review it here.
If you’re looking for a faced-paced book full of folklore, this is for you! This book kept me interested the entire time and I couldn’t wait to read what came next. What’s refreshing about this book is it’s not the typical folklore you find in most books today (thank you for this Jasmine and J. A.). While having some knowledge of Japanese folklore, I found myself using the built-in dictionary on my Kindle often. I’d recommend installing one if you have that capability and are not familiar with Japanese folklore.
It will be difficult to write a review without some spoilers, you’ve been warned…

Aika Fujiwara (or Fujiwara Aika for proper form) is a medical student who has taken to running her mother’s restaurant as her mother is ill. While at work one evening, she learns she is a rare kind of shaman (one that hasn’t been seen in centuries) and all the stories told to her as a young child are indeed true.
Enter Raiden and Shota, cousins who are from the Takaoka Shaman Clan. This is where the adventures begin. Kai, an ancient shaman tied together with an evil spirit, has kidnapped Aika’s mother. While making their way to rescue her, Aika, Raiden, and Shota meet unique creatures (The Sea Dragon King, mermaids, talking crabs) while battling others (The Monkey King). During this time, Aika learns more about her powers and how the shaman world works. There are plenty more adventures and creatures, but trying to keep spoilers to a minimum.
I look forward to the next book in the series to see what Aika’s future holds and how the background characters roles play out.
*Note that Jasmine has made it clear this is a reverse harem series. While there is no sex and minimal adult themes in this book, she said there will be going forward.*
I received an ARC in exchange for my review, however, please note I also purchased the book. This is my favorite book by Jasmine so far!
This is the first book that I have read that had Japanese spirit shamans in it and it is rather intriguing!! The story line pulled me right in and made me wish that I could be seeing everything in real life. I can not wait to see what happens in the next book of the series!!
An epic read!
