Everybody dies. Nobody leaves . . . Award-winning author Scott William Carter returns with his tenth novel, a spellbinding tale of a man who bridges both sides of the great divide. After narrowly surviving a near-fatal shooting, Portland detective Myron Vale wakes with a bullet still lodged in his brain, a headache to end all headaches, and a terrible side effect that radically transforms his … transforms his world for the worse: He sees ghosts. Lots of them.
By some estimates, a hundred billion people have lived and died before anyone alive today was even born. For Myron, they’re all still here. That’s not even his biggest problem. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t tell the living from the dead.
Despite this, Myron manages to piece together something of a life as a private investigator specializing in helping people on both sides of the great divide—until a stunning blonde beauty walks into his office needing help finding her husband. Myron wants no part of the case until he sees the man’s picture … and instantly his carefully reconstructed life begins to unravel.
“Carter’s writing is on target.” – Publishers Weekly
“The Sixth Sense meets Spenser For Hire in Scott William Carter’s magnificent Ghost Detective.” – Michael J. Totten, author of Taken
“Scott is one of those rare writers who can and does cross genres, and do it well. You never know what kind of story you’ll get from him, but you do know that it’ll be good.” – Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Hugo award-winning author of The Disappeared
From the author of The Gray and Guilty Sea and Wooden Bones, comes this riveting novel of a man cursed with a terrible gift. In a world where everybody dies but nobody leaves, Myron Vale is the rare individual who completely straddles both sides of the great divide. His strange ability resulting from a gunshot to the head while serving as a Portland police officer, a few years later he recovers to forge a new life as private investigator catering to both the living and the dead. With its memorable characters, taut prose, and spellbinding story, Scott William Carter’s Ghost Detective will haunt you long after you finish the final pages — a promising launch to what will hopefully be a long-running series.—FRP

Clever writing, weaving plot with revealing mini-stories. Kept me reading non-stop!
Poor Myron. An ex-cop with a bullet lodged in his brain now a private investigator serving both the living and the dead. He was semi-coping until a client brought him a picture of the man who had put that bullet in his brain.
I actually liked this book overall, though i’m not sure i’d read another in the series.
It’s a very different (and rather unpleasant) world view with the after-life being forever present. I would have appreciated some humor in this dark tale. The worst was the time-switching, very unfriendly to the reader… at least label the time period if one …
Very different!
You will want to read the whole series.
I’ve read other books by Mr. Carter in his Oregon Coast Mysteries and enjoyed them, so I thought I’d give this series a look-see too. This has action, some romance ( between Myron & Billie& Alesha) but not too much to spoil the plot) and paranormal activities. If you’re not a fan of ‘ghosts’ then this won’t be your cup of tea. However, it is a …
The book was interesting, and I was involved enough to want to keep going despite some slowdowns and confusion. I was not a fan of the way the chapters switched back and forth to different time-frames; it slowed me down almost every time a new chapter began as I had to once again get my bearings. It was worse every time I put the book down for the …
Loved it
This book takes a different take on life and death
Captivating story filled with interesting characters. Some unexpected twists make for an enjoyable read. I look forward to reading more from this author.
it was strange and a bit hard to get into, but the story was good enough to keep going, with the end totally worth the effort
A great start to the rest of the series. Fun and easy to read.
Fun read.
Interesting premise. Likeable characters. Well written.
Thoroughly enjoyed this unusual detective story. Good development of the main character. Sometimes darkly comic. Would definitely read more in this series.
Nicely done! And very original. I did get a bit confused at times as to if I was reading the current plot or the backstory.
A unique concept for a detective book. Interesting character development. A little longer than it needed to be for my taste. Will be reading more in the series.
Something totally different with a twist. Great characters as well as story line.
Incredibly unique story line. Interesting characters, both the live and dead ones. Hard to put down. Would definitely recommend.
It was interesting but lagged a bit….
