Everybody dies. Nobody leaves . . . Award-winning author Scott William Carter returns with his tenth novel, a spellbinding tale of a man who bridges both sides of the great divide. After narrowly surviving a near-fatal shooting, Portland detective Myron Vale wakes with a bullet still lodged in his brain, a headache to end all headaches, and a terrible side effect that radically transforms his … transforms his world for the worse: He sees ghosts. Lots of them.
By some estimates, a hundred billion people have lived and died before anyone alive today was even born. For Myron, they’re all still here. That’s not even his biggest problem. No matter how hard he tries, he can’t tell the living from the dead.
Despite this, Myron manages to piece together something of a life as a private investigator specializing in helping people on both sides of the great divide—until a stunning blonde beauty walks into his office needing help finding her husband. Myron wants no part of the case until he sees the man’s picture … and instantly his carefully reconstructed life begins to unravel.
“Carter’s writing is on target.” – Publishers Weekly
“The Sixth Sense meets Spenser For Hire in Scott William Carter’s magnificent Ghost Detective.” – Michael J. Totten, author of Taken
“Scott is one of those rare writers who can and does cross genres, and do it well. You never know what kind of story you’ll get from him, but you do know that it’ll be good.” – Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Hugo award-winning author of The Disappeared
From the author of The Gray and Guilty Sea and Wooden Bones, comes this riveting novel of a man cursed with a terrible gift. In a world where everybody dies but nobody leaves, Myron Vale is the rare individual who completely straddles both sides of the great divide. His strange ability resulting from a gunshot to the head while serving as a Portland police officer, a few years later he recovers to forge a new life as private investigator catering to both the living and the dead. With its memorable characters, taut prose, and spellbinding story, Scott William Carter’s Ghost Detective will haunt you long after you finish the final pages — a promising launch to what will hopefully be a long-running series.—FRP

Fans of police procedurals with a paranormal twist will enjoy this book. The style and tone of the book reminded me a bit of the original Night Stalker series, but not as graphic or violent.
This was a very interesting story because most stories I have read or watched about on television can tell the difference between real people and ghosts when first seeing them. Myron Vale is a police man who survives a near fatal shooting and has been in a coma for a long time. When Myron wakes with a bullet still lodged in his brain and a …
Great book. Very original and quite different.
The Sixth Sense meets Spenser For Hire in Scott William Carter’s magnificent Ghost Detective.
I’m always fascinated with ghost stories. But a ghost detective? That’s another level. It’s fun how the author paints the world of spirits. Nothing really new they’re just like the common people living with us.
A good supernatural read. I enjoyed everything about the book.
I absolutely devoured this twisting, surprising and enigmatic page-turner. I liked the character development, the unexpected surprises and began to glance about at my every-day world for passing shadows.
The second book is equally interesting. I enjoy the creative twists and turns, wondering which way the plot will twist next. Cheers!
Intriguing. Good Story.
Something different. I enjoyed reading and thinking about the character and his situation.
will read over and over
A very good read. Very different and well written.
Started it and for some reason put it down. It felt too contrived.
Good story but got confused with time line
Too far-fetched – hard to keep up…
A mind bending; in a fun way; original, thought provoking book. Story had me shaking my head and wondering what this author thinks of all day. The author has brought to life complete with emotions, smells and purpose for existence, a universe we normally only wonder about.
It was a fresh take on life after death — life during death, perhaps. The detective could see ghosts after an injury. The ghosts were not particularly friendly, although a few — Elvis, for one — were friendly, and even helpful.
This was a fun read that kept me engaged. While another reviewer disliked the story line about Myron’s wife, stories are about people, and this part of the story rounded out the character of the ghost detective. I enjoyed this unique blend of noir detective meets paranormal investigator. The sprinkling of humor was a wonderful counter balance to …
I liked it because it was fun and unique. It’s hard to explain but I think anyone that gets it will enjoy it.
Myron Vale is a man with a special talent. He sees ghosts and can talk with them, all because a 38 caliber bullet it a special place in his brain.
The story is interesting and fun to read, so why did I rate it a 3? There is a problem with inconsistencies. First I noted that our Author has found the only existing glock with a safety that can be …
Odd but rather sweet story. I did however enjoy the style of writing. Easy read after a hard day at work. Curl up and enjoy
