Dean Walker lives and works in the small Jersey town he grew up in where he’s a high school teacher and coaches football. In the summers he enjoys being a drummer touring with his band. He likes being single and doesn’t do relationships or commitments. Then he has one unforgettable night with a gorgeous woman named Lainey. He didn’t have her phone number, or even know her last name, so he assumed he’d never see her again. After thinking about her for months she shows up out of the blue and suddenly his life is turned upside down.
Lainey Burrows is a single mom from North Jersey who is a lifestyle blogger with a web series. She has an amazing opportunity come her way, and moves to the small town of Lakeside to redecorate an old house for her show. Then things get interesting when she comes face to face with her hot summer fling who also happens to be her son’s new math teacher. To complicate her life even further she soon learns their night together left her knocked up. Their magnetic connection soon becomes anything but simple when they have to navigate an unplanned pregnancy, and figure out what the future holds for them.
Getting Played (Getting Some, #2) by Emma Chase was a super sexy, sweet story full of humor and heart. It’s a tender, emotional romance about self discovery, and unexpected love. I really enjoyed this book, and couldn’t quit smiling while reading.
What a fun read. I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew it would be good. Emma Chase nails everything she writes, and this was no exception. It was fun, sexy, and entertaining. From the beginning, I was obsessed with Dean,..He’s a playboy and he does it well, he plays lead drummer in a band as something to do during the summer and his a teacher for the rest of the year, but this playboy thing he has going is about to change after a steamy night with Lainey… Dean can’t get her out of his head, and he’s come to the point that he’s ready to settle down. No matter what he is doing, where is he… He can’t get this woman out of his head.
He’s a high school teacher in his home town, and where he grew up, and when he has a teacher-parent meeting with one of the finest students in his class, the last person he expected to see was Lainey, but thats, not the twist… When Deans’ eyes land on Lainey it’s hard to not notice that she has a bump.. and just the right enough time has passed for him to know that the baby is his and he is about to become a father, he was certainly not expecting that.
These two work so well together in my opinion, they both balance each other out, yet they bounce off each other. They are fun, sexy with witty banter. I was in stitches laughing in a few scenes in the book and others I was speechless.
Gah, I love this trope. I am not actually sure why but I do. This book was amazing. It was well written and grabbed my attention from page one, I had already listened to it in audio form with Zachary Webber and Andi Arndt narrating and I LOVED LOVED LOVED it, and actually physically reading the book was just as good. It’s definitely going into my to-be-read-again pile!
READ. THIS. BOOK!
You won’t be disappointed!

I have been a long time fan of Emma Chase…from Tangled till now…
Getting Played is the story of Lainey and Dean.
There are so many wonderful things about this story. Ms. Chase has this amazing ability to write inner dialogue that is quick, hot and funny as hell. Especially the hero’s POV. Epically funny!
I like the fact that both Lainey and Dean are older, not fresh-faced but experienced in life.
Lainey was a young mom and now has a teenager. She has a maturity to her and yet a winsomeness that can’t be defined. She is also upfront about what she wants and what she needs.
Dean is such an enigma! I loved all the facets of his character. He was a player, he owned it and when it was time to step up and be the man he needed to be he did.
The secondary characters were as amazing as the main characters and brought so much more to the story!
The flow of this story is quick but still so full of character and life. I love diving into Ms. Chase’s stories, the worlds she creates are fun, full of life and oh so swoony!
Getting Played left me a blubbering mess with a heart so full it was near bursting from the sheer joy of it.
The book is pure Emma Chase. It’s clever, steamy, entertaining, and – most of all – heartwarming and uplifting at a time when such a story is so desperately needed. It’s real-life without being contrived. The trope is an old classic and one of my favorites, but the storyline itself is completely unique and relatable.
Even more amazing is the cast. I don’t know how the author creates such authentic characters, but I swear they’re so real I could walk outside my front door and talk to them. Actually, I wish I could, because they’re that compelling.
I loved every second of Getting Played, and expect I’ll grow to love it even more each time I revisit.
A good honest to goodness love story. Who would think a one-night stand could lead to forever. That’s what happens to Lainey and Dean. What I loved about this story was that from the minute Dean finds out he is going to be a dad he totally accepts it. There was no denial, no bull just acceptance. From the moment Lainey walked out of their one-night stand Dean felt something. Yes he was a ladies man back in the day, a total player but he never felt for anyone what he now felt for Lainey. Lainey never forgot Dean either after that one night but like Dean they never exchanged names. But when it’s fate nothing will stand in the way. Although Lainey was determined to do this on her own even when she finally did meet up with Dean again, Dean wanted to be a part of it. What happens next is what great love stories are made from and Emma Chase does such an amazing job with these two characters. Dean and Lainey’s one-night stand will last a lifetime.
Ten per cent into the book and the pages were already heating up. It certainly felt like Chase had done a reversal by not holding back on the steaminess when actually, this couldn’t be further from the truth. You’ll know what I mean when you dive into Getting Played, but one thing’s for sure, she managed to get this reader hot and bothered pretty darn quick. Something that’d slipped my mind is that Chase’s bedroom scenes are magnificent. Not sure if I should use this adjective but they simply are. And I could have kicked myself for not having caught up with her books, especially Getting Schooled. Although it’s the first book in the Getting Some duet, I never felt I’d missed out.
‘Dean’s body is a wonderland, and I explore every bit of it. And he plays me like an instrument.’
Now then, apart from seriously contemplating grabbing a fan, my next impression was that there’s so much more to this contemporary romance than meets the eye. I wasn’t wrong. Chase writes with an immense amount of flair, capturing my attention from beginning to end. Bit of advice here; I started the book at daft o’clock which wasn’t such a good idea. Apart from the sleep deficit, trying not to disturb my better half while reading in bed wasn’t easy, either.
“I have this theory, it’s stupid. Life is full of surprises — good and bad. And this one. . . ”
Oops, Dean Walker forgot to ask for her phone number while on a summer tour with his band! Back in Lakeside, his other love is teaching and boy, would I have liked to have a maths teacher like him! He’s really good at what he does and gives his students confidence, even lets them ask personal questions if they earn the privilege. Cheeky monkeys! They don’t hold back once they get going.
“You can ask anything — that’s the whole point. Hit me.”
Yet observing him deliberate over that one night he’d spent with the woman who left without much ado had me grinning from ear to ear. It’s always been the other way round and he can’t quite get around that fact or stop thinking about her. Hmm…just maybe she’s the one who got away, but there’s nothing he can do about it. So, is he a tad big-headed? Well, yes and I was pretty pleased his ego was brought down a notch or two.
‘It happens. When you’re good looking, naturally charming teacher, student crushes come with the territory.’
Lifestyle blogger extraordinaire, Lainey Burrows has an opportunity of a lifetime, doing up a run-down house in Lakeside. Her followers will be in for a treat ‘cause she’s about to show them how to save a penny or two, recycle and watch her refurbishing it. Single mum to a lad who’s older than his years and super intelligent, the poor chap never really fitted in but he does here. His school mates are cool and guess what, his teacher even cooler! Lainey is adorable. Her future pretensions regarding relationships made me kinda sad though. So when the unthinkable happens, her ‘let’s get on with it attitude’ and make the most of a situation she’d never envisaged being in, literally bowled me over.
“You know you’re, like, the best kid ever right?”
“I do okay.”
Please, please don’t read the blurb. I went in blind and it really paid off. The surprise is a game-changer for Dean, no pun intended, and if I’d been swooning over him before, he’s now left me in a right blubberin’ mess! Chase has made her characters come alive in a love story where the dialogue flows with no boundaries, perfect banter in realistic surroundings and romance….this is it! I loved the secondary characters, the family feel-good take on the story is blinkin’ marvellous, and the emotions…WOW! My recommendation. Read it. Bravo Chase and thanks for the Star Wars mention. That tickled me pink!
“Boba Fett didn’t say that.”
“No?”
“The actual quote is ‘He’s no good to me dead.’ ‘Cause he was, you know, talking about Han Solo.”
4.5 stars
I read this without reading Getting Schooled and I did not have any trouble getting into this one although his friends from the first book do pop up frequently in this story. There is even a little connection to one of my favorite Emma Chase characters.
Lainey is a lifestyle vlogger with her own webcast. So she and her gifted son, Jason are moving their lives to Lakeside for her next big assignment. She is strong, creative, independent, likable, and does not like to rely on anyone and risk being disappointed.
Dean is a part-time drummer during the summer and Honors teacher and offensive coach during the school year. He is handsome, funny, caring, and charming. He has a bad rep as a playboy and does not do relationships. He has abandonment issues and does not have much faith in his own ability to be good enough to sustain one.
These two have one extremely hot night that they cannot seem to get out of their heads. But had no way to find the other…until their worlds collided again. I will admit it seemed like it took a bit long to run into each other again, but maybe I was just jonesing for it so badly.
Now they are dealing with something they never expected. Lainey basically sets the rules that Dean will either be ALL IN or ALL OUT. Attachment is scary. The fear of disappointment is real. It’s a small town with lots of people taking an interest in their relationship. These two are both in unchartered waters and not exactly sure where they are going. I loved seeing growth in the characters, especially Dean. I just adored him. And I was dreading the black moment that I figured was coming. Sometimes unnecessary angst that could be corrected by a real conversation does get to me.
And I did get a bit bogged down sometimes in the vlogging and decorating tips and taken out of the story, but with that being said some of the vlog entries were sweet and also allowed more involvement from others.
Overall this is an engaging, funny, sexy, and heartfelt story with likable characters. Their banter and chemistry are fantastic. I enjoyed the small-town setting and getting to know the quirky and unfiltered side characters. They have fun and caring friends and family. I would like to return to Lakeside for more in future stories.
This was scorching love story. Elizabeth @ Carolina Chic’s Read
Lainey is our with her friends a night out from being a mom. She meets Dean, a drummer and they have an instant connection and one night together.
Lainey is a lifestyle blogger and is moving to a new town with her son. Her son is extremely smart, young and is entering high school early. She never imagined running into him again. Or the connection to still be there….
Dean cannot get the beautiful woman out of his mind, so when he sees her in his office during a parent/teacher meeting, he is shocked and his feelings of lust are raging. He wants her, maybe forever.
You are going to love this…5 Stars!
The Narrators were perfectly chosen.
Now, to start off, our love interest, Dean, is good at football, in a band, has a very high IQ, and is a teacher, so that makes this total fantasy, but yeah, sometimes it is good to have that perfect of a guy, I mean I’m reading to get away, right? I guess I didn’t read the synopsis of the story very well, because I didn’t realize she was going to end up pregnant! Because that was a big twist I didn’t see coming. And also, when he offered to just be there for her physical needs if that was all she wanted, and she didn’t want to take him up on it? What? That’s crazy girl!
But I loved the story, it was really good, really sweet, and now, I want to go back and read/listen to the first one. Also, where is the teacher that I can find to hook up with myself as a school librarian?
Simply Amazing!!
This is a great book! I listened to the audiobook and I loved it! Dean is now one of my favorites. You need to listen or read this book it’s so good! This has plenty of laugh out loud moments and moments were it will touch your heart and maybe tear up a little. You may want to listen or read it more than once.
Dean Walker plays in the band during the summer and runs into Lainey Burrow. They have a passionate time together and instant connection. Little do they know that they will be seeing each other in the soon to be future as teacher and parent.
They will have to deal with each other for more than just for parent teacher conferences when they find out their one night leaves to Lainey being pregnant. This is an amazing book, I wish I could give it more than 5 stars.
Audio Review
If you are looking to be entertained look no further than listening to Getting Played narrated by Andi Arndt and Zachary Webb, they did an amazing job bringing this book to life.
Dean and Lainey’s romance is a feel good story, it’s hot, it’s funny and it has all the feels you want in a great read or in my case listen.
This book is a great story and it’s easy to fall for the characters especially when the narration is so natural. This book will certainly make you smile, it will make you swoon and it has more than a few laugh out loud moments, it’s a book I highly recommend not only for the brilliant writing but also for the perfect narration. Emma Chase books always leave you with all the feels and Getting Played is no different and it’s going on my best reads if 2019
This is a beautiful love story that thankfully is low on drama! The story of how a one night stand ended up being everything! The narrators were great and really brought the story to life!
I loved Dean and Lainey! And Jay!
A hook-up resulting in missed opportunity and surprises. A couple who can’t get over the memories of that amazing night. A surprise meeting at her son’s school. And the surprise of a lifetime. This is where it all began. The feelings swirling in heart and brain. It brings a man to his knees with discovery and regret for all that went before. To bring the fear to the surface along with the most rewarding hope. The passion that goes beyond love. The family you never dared dream of. The love of a lifetime.
And these narrators brought this wonderful, sexy story to life.
I enjoyed everything about this book. Dean and Lainey are simply perfect. Their chemistry is undeniable, the relationship they develop is beautiful. There were some bumps in their journey, but it was a fun, humorous, and heartwarming ride to go on with them.
4.5 Stars. The narration was 5 stars for sure. I really love Emma Chase and read pretty much everything she writes. I was so excited to read Dean’s story in this series. I am a sucker for a boy becoming a man and growing up and realizing when he finds a love he cannot live without. My only complaint is that Dean got around a little too much in his hayday and it made me a little cringey. When he was in a room and was asked how many of the women he had slept with, he said two thirds. Two thirds of the women in a room full of people from his hometown? No. I just have to draw the line somewhere because it is obvious he didn’t. That being said, I loved how as soon as he met Lainey he realized she was the one and straightened right up. I couldn’t have done with anything but loyalty from him at that point. This book was a light fun listen and I highly suggest a listen because Zachary Webber is always a good idea.
***AUDIBLE REVIEW
There’s nothing like an Emma Chase romantic comedy, and the fact that Zachary Webber and Andi Arndt narrated Getting Played, bringing Lainey Burrows and Dean Walker’s perspectives to life made this story even better because the banter between Lainey and Dean as well as Lainey with her sisters and Dean with his nerdy math students, Lainey’s son included, and his fellow educators were expertly brought to life by the narrators’ voices, making these scenes hilarious and captivating.
Lainey is definitely my kind of heroine. She’s an independent single mom who has a kickass career as a lifestyle blogger, giving tutorials and advice about anything and everything. I love how self-sufficient she is and while, in some ways, she was forced to be once her son’s father didn’t want anything to do with them, it’s clear that she likes doing things on her own, but that doesn’t mean she wouldn’t mind having someone in her life who would make things just a bit easier for her in all facets of her life.
Lainey’s relationship with her teenage son, Jason, is amazing; they love each other unconditionally and support one another in everything. Their bond is something all parents would want with their kids, and I loved listening to their interactions and the way Jason defends his mom with everything that he is.
Dean is quite the sexy book boyfriend. He’s a teacher and football coach during the school year and a hot as hell drummer during the summer. And while he has quite the playboy reputation in his hometown of Lakeside, it doesn’t mean that he’s incapable of a monogamous relationship, he just needed the right woman to come along and knock him on his ass and Lainey definitely does that and then some, especially when they meet up again in a rather unusual and life altering way.
I absolutely loved EVERY SINGLE THING about this story; the main and secondary characters, the small town setting, the brimming sexual tension between Lainey and Dean, and Dean’s evolvement into exactly the man, lover, and father that Lainey, Jason, and their baby want and need!
5 Poison Apples
Audiobook review:
Loved, loved, loved!
Swoony and sexy and funny and SO GOOD.
Narrators were PERFECT.
I loved it and it was just as great as the first book in this series. I can’t recommend it enough. The narrators were fantastic. It was a funny, sweet, and sexy love story.
If I could turn back time…
I’m pretty happy with my life now but a few years ago, I couldn’t help but over-analyse all my past bad decisions. If I could turn back time and give myself a bit of advice, I wouldn’t be going back to right my wrongs, I’d be going back to tell myself to look forward.
Pretty philosophical, hey?
I guess I just couldn’t help but feel sorry for the main characters in the story, Dean and Lainey and how they were pigeon-holed because of their past. Lainey for having a child young and out of wedlock, and Dean because he was a player and broke a few hearts. They both learnt from their lessons and tried to live their lives not repeating those mistakes. Dean is very straight with the women he sleeps with and never makes promises he can’t commit to. Lainey has made a good life for her son and herself, trying to never rely on others for their happiness. Unfortunately for Lainey, even taking precautions, it seems as if history is repeating itself.
I really enjoyed listening to Getting Played. Both narrators do a really great job and I found myself connecting with the characters more because of their storytelling ability. They are both so easy to listen to and I never struggle to understand them or identify when the characters change. I will definitely listen to more from Andi Arndt and Zachary Webber in the future.
Emma Chase has treated us to a cute and sexy story set in a small town. The characters are original, funny and full of heart. Lainey’s son Jason, was smart, sweet and very loyal to his mother. Dean’s students (including Jason) were entertaining and I loved that the nerdy kids were portrayed as pretty cool and not the butt of jokes. Both Lainey and Dean’s families were great and I loved their obvious connection.
I’ve really enjoyed the Getting Some series so far and I really hope there will be more in the future.
I love this book. Lainey and Dean are such great characters. I felt like I was right there while everything was happening. The is the first book by Emma Chase that I have read or listened to. She made all the characters seem so real. It was funny, witty, sexy and hot. I wasn’t ready for the book to end.
