He’s effortlessly talented and intelligent—spending his summers playing drums in the local band and the rest of the year teaching high school in the same Jersey town where he grew up. Shel: Let me tell you about reading Emma Chase novels.
Shel: You pick one up with enough time to read a chapter and it’s never enough time, ever. So then you find yourself trying to negotiate with your schedule to see if there’s any way possible that you can ignore everything in your life until you can get to the end. You’re reading at every moment, sneak reading when you should be working, and putting off today what you can do tomorrow to get back to the book and to the HEA that you know is coming. Court: That is an 100% accurate description of how my day reading this book went!
Shel: This is my experience with every Emma Chase novel and since it had been a while since I’ve read her, I foolishly thought I’d be able to dole the reading out this time. HAHAHAH. Nope. Getting Played is addictive and impossible to put down. Lainey and Dean’s story is heartwarming, sexy, fun, and funny. It includes many of my favorite things–unexpected surprises, moments that’ll make you laugh until you shake the bed, characters you actually would like to be friends with, and an oh shit moment that sucks but isn’t drawn out too long, and secondary characters we’ve met before and are so happy to see again. Court: YES! I really liked all of the twists and turns that was their journey in this story. I liked their characters and had fun in both of their heads. I too am ashamed to admit it has been way too long since I’ve devoured her books, and I have to say I regret it. I need to find out if there’s been anything I’ve missed out on because Emma Chase books are such a joy to read every single time.
Shel: I love this couple and this cast of characters and I am hoping against hope that we get more stories from this crew. Court: I am too. Even if it is in the form of Grams and the Widower Anderson, I’ll take it… 😉 lol!
“Getting Played” is a sweet romance, with all the feel good moments. It is the story of Dean Walker, a math teacher and football coach, and Lainey Burrows, lifestyle blogger, life coach and single mother. Overall, I enjoyed these characters and the way they fell into a relationship. Their scenes were filled with sweetness, sexiness and emotion. The unexpected string in their relationship comes in the form of a positive pregnancy test. You can tell they have a lot of chemistry from the first meet. They connect in a moment and eventually hook up, resulting in an accidental pregnancy.
Their one night stand wasn’t supposed to be more than a wonderful memory, but Dean can’t stand the idea of another man raising his kid. Dean is an absolute sweetheart, he is funny, charming, thoughtful and it was a lovely change to have a sensitive and tender hero rather than an alpha hero battling his emotions. He isn’t mad or unhappy about the baby. I also loved his perseverance when it came to Lainey.
I loved to see Dean and Lainey getting to know each other better. Their fake relationship felt more and more like a real one. The author portrayed the evolution of their relationship in a realistic way. Their blossoming romance was believable. I was able to see them change throughout, both as individuals and as a couple. The romantic aspect was done really well, Dean and Lainey were great together and I enjoyed their playful banter.
What I also loved about the book were the supporting characters. Lainey’s family is adorable and hilarious, and her relationship with her son was so cute.
I’ve been waiting to read Getting Played for a while now. A romance with a one-night stand resulting in pregnancy and the hero turning out to be the heroine’s teenage son’s teacher? Sign me up! Getting Played was a refreshing take on the one-night stand and surprise pregnancy. There’s no drama between Lainey and Dean. When Lainey discovers she’s pregnant and has no way to contact Dean, she just gets on with her life. She’s already a single mom to a teenage son so she know she can do this again. And when she runs into Dean again, she’s straightforward about offering him a place in the baby’s life, if he decides he wants one. While there is drama to their relationship and misunderstandings, it’s dealt with natural and in a way that I enjoyed. While Getting Played has familiar tropes, it deals with them beautifully and in a way I appreciated.
Getting Played is a book I read in one sitting. I just couldn’t put it down. I loved both Dean and Lainey from the start. I’m also always excited when a main character of a book happens to be a blogger. That’s something I always enjoy and I loved getting a glimpse of what she loved to do.
Dean Walker is a teacher and coah during the school year, but trades his geeky side to be a rock star during the summer. I loved that there was more than one side to him. He loves being with the band, but trading that to be with his students is something he loves. Dean definitely has a place on my really long book boyfriend list. The way he was with his students was amazing and I was grateful that played a part in this story.
Lainey is a strong woman and was able to build a career out of her blogging. That’s amazing and so creative. She’s a single mom to her teenage son and their bond was something that really stood out in this book. Lainey was really there for him and it’s clear he knew that she was there for him. She has a fun family and the descriptions of all of her sisters made me laugh out loud.
Lainey and Dean have chemistry and they’re proof a one night stand can change your life. Getting Played shows us that when things are meant to be, it will happen. A pregnancy on top of everything definitely made this story interesting and gave it many laugh out loud moments. Seeing the sensitive sides of these characters was really heartwarming.
If you’re looking for a feelgood, heartwarming romance that will make you laugh out loud, definitely pick up Getting Played. The main characters are amazing, but the side characters really complete this story. And fans of Getting Schooled will be happy to get a glimpse of the characters we got to know in love in that book!
I loved “Getting Played” by Emma Chase because it was sweet, sexy, and laugh-out-loud funny. I found Dean’s feud with Lucy (“Lucifer”) the cat and the antics of little Will (Garrett and Callie’s toddler son) to be particularly comical. As Dean learned, you really shouldn’t swear in front of little kids if you don’t want them to repeat those words!
This story also featured wonderful main characters in Dean and Lainey. Despite his reputation as a shallow player who was afraid to commit, Dean turned out to be an incredibly loving, caring man who looked out for Lainey and her son Jason as well as his grandmother and his students. The way he treated his students was wonderful, and I especially liked how he made them take time to be kids at the end of each class. Even if it was only five minutes a day, I can see how that downtime could make a world of difference in their often hectic lives. The students themselves were very endearing, and Dean’s interactions with them showed that he would be an excellent stepfather to Jason and father to his own child.
As for Lainey, she was a great mom and I loved that she was so passionate about her career. I was also very excited by the fact that her sister Erin was Drew Evans’s assistant from the “Tangled” series. It felt a bit like an Easter egg included in the story for longtime Emma Chase fans. It was great to catch up with Erin and her boyfriend through their interactions with Lainey, as well as with Garrett and Callie from the first book of this series.
Overall, “Getting Played” is another winner from Emma Chase and I can’t wait to see what she writes next. (Might I suggest a story for Garrett’s brother, Connor?)

In staying true to Emma chase’s style this book was a fun filled laugh out loud book that will have you running the gambit of emotions. Her character’s Dean and Lainey were so well developed and real that the romcom movie plays in your head as fully developed characters melting your heart as you watch their story unfold.
Their meeting was definitely a meet schemxy type. They were flirty, endearing and smoking hot. Definitely leaving an impression on them both. Never expecting the One night to turn onto more. Well that is until the summer time drummer ends up being Lainey’s sons teacher! Cue the shocked gasps and wait for it…. The unexpected surprise that Lainey has to share with Dean.
From beginning t end this book is a fun read that had me giggling all the way through. I wasn’t surprised as all the books I have read by Emma give me the greatest of feels. Getting Played met that expectation and exceeded it, setting the bar for my ROM COM’s.
I received a free copy of this book from the author.
I love reading Emma Chase books. She’s so creative with her characters. This book features a genius school teacher who’s also a drummer in a band. He’s easy to look at too! It also has a single mom who works from home as a DIY blogger.
These two are an interesting pair. They meet, initially, as a one night stand. Then – oops – hot drummer guy is her sons teacher at his new school. They have a swoon worthy connection but it isn’t until he really earns her trust that their relationship blossoms into more than just the one night stand.
I enjoyed reading Dean and Lainey’s love story. They have a lot going for them and her perception and attitude toward things is a welcoming change from some of the books I’ve been reading. I hope you enjoy this book as much as I did!
I received an ARC. I so love and adore this book. A one night stand that changes both characters life forever. All the characters were perfect! The chemistry between Dean and Lainey was off the chart. They’re irresistible. Dean was AMAZING. We all need a Dean in our life. Lol Him wanting to be there for Lainey and Jason was very swooning. He made me swoon right and left. Lainey was such a sweetheart. As a single mother, she didn’t let anything take her down. Always supporting Jason. I highly, highly recommend this book. u2063

Getting Played was AMAZING!!!! I just love everything Emma writes, her books just have this magical touch that you need.
I’ve been dying for this book and it seriously did not disappoint. I loved Lainey so much, as a single mother all she wants to do is work hard and make sure her son is happy.
Dean, I FREAKING LOVE HIM!!! He was so alpha yet so caring. I loved how he didn’t let anything keep him from what he wanted. Lainey and Dean were FIRE, the chemistry was off the charts. I loved Deans friendship with Jason, I loved how Dean took care not just of Lainey and their unborn child but also of Jason.
This book is a must read, plus we see what’s been going on with Callie and Garrett(boy do I miss them)
I have a soft spot for single parent books and this one is the reason why. Light-hearted and sweet, this small town rom-com is just what I need. Steamy and swoony. LOVE!!!
I loved the writing and the characters, the intimate moments are great and the story overall has a bit of everything from angsty moments to laugh out loud ones.
It’s an quick fast paced read and heartwarming story.
This was such an amazing story! I loved Dean and Lainey and this adventure they were on together. It was so entertaining, sweet, and sexy! Loved it!
Getting Played is a sexy, funny, low-angst, heartfelt romantic comedy about a one-night stand that turns into the sweetest forever, when single-mom, Lainey Burrows, discovers that her steamy summer fling – Dean Walker – is also her son’s new math teacher. It’s a swoony, feel good story that focuses on a small town, family, and the amazing surprises life throws our way.
One wild one-night stand was all it was supposed to be…
Getting Played by Emma Chase is sexy, sweet, and a heartfelt treat. I loved this book!!! I’m originally from New Jersey, and I have friends that are teachers or play in rock bands like the characters in this book. Fun fact: I used to play drums. I’ve had a Dean-like character break my heart and a friend or two like Lainey. This story was relatable for me on so many levels. Maybe I was feeling a bit nostalgic while reading Getting Played since I was just making plans with my NJ crew. Nah, it’s this book! I felt like I knew these characters. I laughed out loud so many times, and my heart is bursting from the ending. One-click worthy!Getting Played (Getting Some Book 2)
This was the perfect, swoony, funny, feel good story!
A sexy, funny, whimsical romantic comedy from Emma Chase! A must read!
Getting Played was one of my most anticipated reads of the year. I absolutely loved Getting Schooled, so I couldn’t wait to read Dean’s story. To say that I was not disappointed is an understatement. Getting Played was everything I had hoped for and so much more. It was so much fun to read. It was super cute, witty, sexy, and even a bit emotional. I loved Dean, Lainey, and all the secondary characters that add so much to the story.
Getting Played is a feel good story that melts your heart and leaves a smile on your face. I highly recommend! Emma Chase has once again written a story that will make you laugh out loud and fall in love. I can’t wait to read what she releases next!
Review by Lys
I absolutely adored this book! I am not familiar with Emma Chase, but you betcha believe that I will be now! This book has the essentials that I love- a great story with an interesting twist, intricate characters that you understand and can see yourself in their shoes, and lots of feels!
What happens when you throw caution to the wind and hook up with the super hot drummer for the band you just saw and then wind up pregnant weeks later? Even better you find out the sex god is your kid’s teacher and happens to be a HUGE commitment-phobe……….. *insert evil laugh*
All in all, I am a huge fan of Getting Played. The story was fun and light-hearted but also with so many feels. If you enjoy accidental pregnancy romances with fun twists and turns and great characters- this is your book!! 4.5 outta 5 stars!
PS: Thank you to Social Butterfly PR and Emma Chase for allowing me an advanced copy of the book to read and review honestly!
I mean, the cover says it all. 1-click alert, amirite? Emma Chase gives us Getting Played, book 2 in the Getting Some standalone series (you don’t need to read book 1 but if you want to, it’s called Getting Schooled). This is low-angst and sexy—a single mom and her steamy-summer-fling turned her-son’s-new-math-teacher. Yikes! Happy reading 🙂
What a fun plot! Lainey is a single mother who has built herself a career after becoming a teenage mother. Landing a life-changing contract, she decides to have one night of fun before her work starts, and it’s there that she meets Dean, the insanely hot drummer of the band playing at the bar. One thing leads to another and they end up having a one-night stand. But in true Lainey fashion, one night ends up leading to a lifetime when she finds out she is pregnant. Unbeknownst to her, work has brought her to the same town that Dean lives in, and it becomes one of the funniest storylines where they can’t track each other down yet live in the same town and never see each other. When they finally find each other and realize who each other actually is, as well as the pregnancy, Dean takes it as a sign that his life has changed and does anything in his power to prove his feelings for Lainey and that he’s not there just because of the baby. But when Dean’s past comes back to haunt him and threatens the relationship he is building with Lainey, will they be able to recover and have the relationship and family they both wanted? This was such a fun storyline, especially with Lainey’s career in blogging. Can’t wait to get the next installment in this series!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
