A sexy opposites attract, single parent romance!New Orleans firefighter, James Reynaud’s true love is hanging out in the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street and playing piano with some of the best musicians in the city. But driving his cute, bookworm neighbor Harper Broussard crazy is right up there on his list of favorite things. The buttoned-up linguistics professor across the hall is a little older, … buttoned-up linguistics professor across the hall is a little older, a lot smarter, and way too good for him. And she knows it. But wow is she beautiful when she blushes.
She’s equally gorgeous when she’s saving his butt. Because now things just got serious. A baby has been, literally, dropped off on his doorstep and to say he’s in over his head is an understatement. Not that Harper knows anything about babies either. But at least they now have something in common.

First, I have to say a huge “THANK YOU” to author Erin Nicholas for adding this book into the Boys of the Big Easy series! I probably say this every time I review one of her books, but this may be my new favorite! Fun, hot, firefighter and college professor…YES PLEASE!!!
From the moment Harper Broussard got the first knock on her door (located across the landing from James Reynaud) and she gave him an assignment to write a research paper…their “relationship” began. Not like a “relationship” relationship…but like a friendly neighbor one, because, you know…a relationship with the hot firefighter was definitely not in the plans for the professor.
“Life is what happens when you’re busy making other plans.”
They had each other’s backs and keys to each other’s apartments…
“I’m coming over.”
“You’d come over if I have a girl tied up in bed?”
…and a plant…and a lizard…and a dog…and a BABY???
“I just got home and found him.”
The story of this playboy-firefighter-pianist and the planner-college professor is hilarious, full of banter, and so freaking enjoyable to read!! It is a delicious mix of serious and humor, heat and heartache, and finding ones strengths and weaknesses. The storyline is perfection, the characters (we even get to revisit the other Big Easy boys and girls!) are SO great, and the heat…YEP! It all blends to make it a book you will love to read! It can be a standalone, but it is nice if you know the other characters from the rest of the series when you dive into this one…5 Stars, baby!
This was a good read. The writing flowed well, the only part that was a little confusing was the beginning. It’s kind of a time hop, but only lasts for the 1st chapter. I liked Harper at first, and I thought she was going to be a good fit with James. While I can understand that being thrown into the situation they were in would be surprising for anyone, Harper jumped to conclusions that pretty much lead to all the drama. She did get better toward the end of the story, but it took a while for her to get out of her routines. James was a great hero, and I loved that he always took care of everyone. They did have great chemistry, and I was excited to see them get their HEA.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
What a wonderful story! I highly recommend this book. This can be read as a stand alone book but I would recommend reading the entire series
Hot sexy fireman and jazz musician James lives across the hall from university professor Harper. Although he is very much attracted to her, he thinks she is so out of his league. Fate has intervened a number of times when he has had to ask for her help with a plant, a bearded dragon and a dog and they become closer especially as co-parents of the dog.
Harper is trying hard not to fall for the man that she sees as a real life romance-novel hero. Although she loves that he wants to help everyone and everything she doesn’t want to be another notch on his bedpost. Just as things between James and Harper begin to heat up, a baby is left outside his apartment door. As James and Harper work together to try to find the baby’s mother Harper has to deal with her jealousy over the number of women she thinks James has in his life while she is falling even more for him.
This is such a fun entertaining story with lots of humour especially the baby poop scene! You have to fall for James as he takes everything in his stride, finds humour in it and at the same time flirts unmercifully with Harper, while at the same time getting more attached to his son.
The story did have a surprising ending that I was not at all expecting, but it made for a good finale as the new family is formed.
4.5 Stars
I’ve been waiting for this one and it was worth the wait. I loved James and Harper. This book has such a fun light feel to it. It’s exactly the type of book I needed right now. I just loved the humor in this book. I couldn’t put this one down. James and Harper have been building the sexual tension and just when they are ready to make the move life throws them a curve ball. I loved watching them navigate learning to care for a baby. Loved this book so much. It’s one you shouldn’t pass up!
Whenever this talented lady’s new words get released into the universe, everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, in my life screeches to a halt, and my eyes, heart and soul greedily soak up every word. My apologies to the book I was in the middle of reading and ditched, to the other books that had top priority and got pushed aside, and to my bed that I left cold and alone for a night.
The Boys of the Big Easy is one of my all-time favorite book worlds, so I was eagerly anticipating returning there with James and Harper’s story and, oh baby, it really delivered! Take one hunky, younger, firefighter/musician with an unrepentant grin, and a brainy, introverted, scholar able to induce librarian and professorial fantasies at a single glance, and add the twist of a surprise baby to knock both hero and heroine off their stride, and I’m SOOO there!
With the impeccable comedic timing and perfect balance of humor, heat and heart I’ve come to expect from this writer, James and Harper’s story is the cherry on top of this sundae dessert series. It’s always extra delicious for me when the hero is the first to fall, and watching James as he jumped through Harper’s hoops, and then seeing him with baby Isaac, well, I was a big ol’ puddle of swoon. And I’d be lying if I said the younger man/older woman trope wasn’t a lot of fun.
If this is your first introduction to this series, it’s a great place to start, since these books stand alone. But I’ll warn you. You will fall in love with all of these Big Easy characters, and they’ll make you want to read every one of their books. This story is fun and flirty, and witty and humorous, yet poignant and moving. Your emotions will love the workout they get and your heart will be left smiling once you finish this delightful, touching, phenomenal, feel-good read!
Getting Off Easy, like all Erin Nicholas books, has hilarious dialogue, heartfelt moments, relatable characters, and a great romance.
James and Harper are neighbors who are attracted to each other and their banter and flirting were so fun. When James finds a baby on his doorstep, it’s Harper he turns to for help caring for him.
I absolutely loved James. He is a firefighter who also plays jazz music, but the best part of him is how kind and generous he is. I have read the entire Boys of the Big Easy series and James has become my favorite of all the guys. Not an easy feat as I really enjoyed each of the books.
Harper is smart, thoughtful, and also kind-hearted. It was really cool seeing her correct James and tell him that language and the name of something matters.
The story moves at a good pace and the baby is adorable. If you are looking for a sweet, spicy, and entertaining read, I would definitely pick this one up. This book is a standalone, but I highly recommend the entire series and all of Erin’s books, especially the Boys of the Bayou.
Thank you to the author for providing an ARC for an honest review.
Sweetly sexy, laugh out loud fun, emotionally thrilling journey filled with heartwarming ahhh moments. Really enjoyed this action packed adventure filled with exciting and engaging charters, witty banter, heart tugging twists and undeniable passion….. excellent reading!
Getting Off Easy is one you won’t be able to put down! Two people brought together by the mystery of who abandoned a newborn baby at their door, will lead to so much more. Filled with anticipation of who the mystery baby mama is and whether or not Isaac is James’s son, will have you turning the pages just as fast as you can read. I haven’t been this anxious about how everything will turn out for the characters, in a long time. I loved Harper and James together, their banter and chemistry make for a wonderful romance, and I can’t wait to read this story all over again. Definitely one of my favorites in the Boys of the Big Easy series!
Every visit to the Big Easy has been so much fun!!!
I loved meeting James in Nice and Easy and was so curious about his professor neighbor. I love reading about opposites so much because there’s always a sense of exasperation with each other because of the differences. James and Harper are so different but they rise to every occasion. Need to keep a tree alive, raise a dog, take care of a random class pet? These two will figure it out and get it done. So what happens when a baby shows up on James’ doorstep? They figure out how to work together and get it done.
There were parts of this story that were predictable but it was still one of the funnest books I’ve read in a long time. I have loved all of the characters in this series. Erin Nicholas has such a talent for connecting you to every character in every book so you just can’t wait to visit again and see HEAs for everyone you’ve met. I definitely want to return to this amazing group!!
Lawd have mercy!!!! The south is hot and getting hotter by the book. Plus the humor is just perfect!!! Only Erin Nicholas can create these characters who become family, both to each other and to us. We love meeting them, watching them grow and change and then they feel like a part of us.
James and Harper have been on the fringes of other stories and we were just waiting. Totally worth the wait!!! If you ever have a question about what new series to start, easy answer….Any of Erin’s. But the Boys of the Big Easy is a favorite.
I have been waiting for this book since the scene in Nice and Easy (the one before this in the series) where the guys are discussing erotic romances and then James gets on the phone with Harper. That phone call was so intriguing, and we could only read one side of it! I had to know what that story was going to be, and it did not disappoint in any way.
The first chapter alone had me laughing and dying to read the rest of the story. James and Harper have the most wonderful banter and chemistry. I think I highlighted half of their conversations. So much fun! But the best part is how they bring out the best in each other. They make a great team, something that I have always thought about my husband and me. It is easy to feel the love and respect between them. And did I mention the chemistry? They manage to get in some pretty great sexy times considering that they are taking care of a newborn.
I loved seeing peeks of previous characters (waving at Caleb) who popped up to help James and Harper. I also held on to a tissue for the last two chapters of the book when things got really intense. There were some sad tears and some happy tears. I won’t be forgetting this book any time soon.
I was introduced to Ms. Nicholas’ words last year and so far I have loved her writing.
When the opportunity to read an early copy of Getting Off Easy presented itself I quickly jumped at the chance.
I LOVED LOVED LOVED James and Harper’s story. From the beginning this story captured me. Their flirty banter, steamy moments, and just their willingness to care for everything from plants, lizards, dogs, drunk girls, and a baby just makes their story fun, cute, and even with an occasional feel thrown in the mix. Hands down my favorite so far of Erin Nicholas’ books. Absolutely a must read!
Well Erin Nicholas has done it again! Another hot, dirty talking book boyfriend! Wow, I mean there are not enough words to describe how awesome James was. And Harper was exactly right for him and he was even better for her. You could practically feel the chemistry between these two coming off the pages. I loved everything that James and Harper had to go through to get to where they are, it was perfect that they got to know each other and just realize how the other person just made them happy. This is a fantastic series and this was another great book. Definitely would recommend this book!
ARC for honest review with no compensation
Getting Off Easy is book. 4 in the Boys of the Big Easy series by Erin Nicholas about James Reynaud, hot, sexy, NOLA firefighter, jazz musician and Harper Brossard, beautiful, bookworm linguistic professor, who lives arose the hall.
This book encompasses so much emotion…laughter, tears, easy going, come what may, a little mystery, getting outside your comfort zone and a baby surprise too!! Another well written, fun book by the author and hopefully more books to come in this series!
I received a complimentary ARC – early release copy of this book in Kindle format from the author for review purposes.
This is part of the series but it easily stands alone. Prob more than any of the other stories as both main characters are pretty new to the series. This is James story and he is a young, 27 year old firefighter and Jazz musician and he has an apartment in New Orleans and meets his hot older neighbor and falls into instalust with her. She is a professor at the college and very together and more mature. She is a homebody and prefers hanging out on her couch and reading, she also is about 5 years older than James.
The story back tracks a little in the cutest way as it shows their meet cute and then how James starts to get to know her when he has her adopt things he ends up getting and needing to take care of. He forms this really cute friendship with Harper.
I loved that he is NOT a playboy. He has the biggest heart and I loved that he opened that heart up to his friends and Harper. Until one day he knocks on Harpers door with a baby he found and asks for her help and his friends help as well.
This story was pretty darned wonderful. It is sweet and fun and heart warming and prob one of my absolute favorites in the entire series and I am not a crier but near the end I had some tears in my eyes. Kudos to the author for such a wonderful story she added to this series.
Sweet, steamy and emotional.
I adored James and Harper’s story! They appeared to seamlessly progress from neighbours to friends to lovers to partners.
“Hot, young, cocky and a good guy. Yeah, her romance novels definitely talked about guys like him. All the time.”
James is such a hottie but also a sweetie. He has a beautiful heart and is a natural caregiver. I loved how he never questioned whether looking after something or someone was the right thing to do. I loved his little obsession with Harper – he seemed to live to make her smile. The guy who enjoyed his singledom immensely is suddenly not interested in anyone else but the sexy professor across the landing.
“He wanted to do everything with Harper. Yep, red flag.”
Initially, Harper doesn’t want anything to do with her gorgeous, charming neighbour. But with every knock on her door, he gradually breaks down her walls and her doubts. Just as she decides to go for it, his whole life changes and she’s not sure if she’s willing for her life to change, too, but James just keeps needing her and keeps pushing her into a place that she realises she possibly belongs.
“His lips moved over hers, steady and firm, saying you’re mine, as his thumbs stroked over her throat in a clear message of and you’re not going anywhere.”
This was a gorgeous, amusing, sexy read. I loved the chemistry between James and Harper. James really melted my heart with his attempts to win Harper over, as well as his golden heart. I adored how organically their relationship moved from one state to another. It felt like they were so connected and meant to be together. Thoroughly recommend!
What an outstanding read. Erin Nicholas has quickly become one of my go to authors. I love her flair for words, her wit and the down home charm her storylines portray. Ms. Nicholas books that I have read have all been romantic comedies with not only humor, but a touch a sassy, down home charm and usually a few OMG moments as well. Getting off Easy, fit the bill. I laughed, signed, honestly thought OMG a few time as well.
I don’t do spoilers, beside I feel the Blurb should be enough to get you hooked. I mean who can turn down a romance that involves a sexy firefighter, a gorgeous book work, a baby, a tree, a dog and a bearded dragon?
Kudos Ms. Nicholas a job well done. I Highly Recommend Getting Off Easy and the Boys of the Big Easy series. These are great make you smile, feel good romantic storylines. Grab them up, you won’t regret it. 2 Thumbs Up and 5 Stars.
I absolutely loved every second of watching James & Harper fall in love! I loved that Erin took us back to their initial meetings, and that we got to see how they slowly fell for each other! James is such a lovable goofball & watching him with Isaac was so sweet! Harper was endearing because she was so unsure of herself at moments, and watching her realize that she’s just as much of a nurturer as James is awesome!!
Wow just WOW!! I loved, LOVED this book. It was wonderfully written with amazing characters. It captured me from the very beginning. I couldn’t put it down. It had everything I look for in a book – wonderful storyline, incredibly amazing characters that were so right for each other, and wonderful scenes…some very hot scenes too! Definitely recommend you read this fourth installment to the Boys of the Big Easy series. You won’t want to miss it. Did I say I loved this book…and author!!!
