A sexy opposites attract, single parent romance!New Orleans firefighter, James Reynaud’s true love is hanging out in the jazz clubs on Frenchmen Street and playing piano with some of the best musicians in the city. But driving his cute, bookworm neighbor Harper Broussard crazy is right up there on his list of favorite things. The buttoned-up linguistics professor across the hall is a little older, … buttoned-up linguistics professor across the hall is a little older, a lot smarter, and way too good for him. And she knows it. But wow is she beautiful when she blushes.
She’s equally gorgeous when she’s saving his butt. Because now things just got serious. A baby has been, literally, dropped off on his doorstep and to say he’s in over his head is an understatement. Not that Harper knows anything about babies either. But at least they now have something in common.

I was glad to see James and Harper finally get thier own happily-ever-after! I’ve been waiting for this ever since her character first made an appearance in Nice and Easy. (Although that scene plays out differently here than I remember from there. Not to mention that I was very disappointed that we were never made privy to the list she provided for the guys’ book club reading!) Harper is a bit quirky, but is also amazingly delightful and supportive. The whole premise of their major interactions through the course of this book was very off-putting to me. But most of their time together was adoreable, making this a fun book to read. The ending did fall a little flat for me, but it was a nice one, so I guess it worked out okay.
Smart, fun and sexy…I really, really enjoyed James and Harper’s story. Their neighborly friendship is absolutely the best dynamic to jump from into a true and sincere love. James’s charm, wit and desire breaks through Harper’s more serious and controlled demeanor as well as the sweet innocence of a little Baby boy to her surprise.
This story is so full of understanding, acceptance and love that you won’t want to put it down.
I loved Getting Off Easy. The spark and connection between this pair made for great reading.
James was a sweetheart and I liked that the professor had him thinking about what and who he really wanted in his life.
Harper could so easily have been too quiet for the firefighter next door but she ended up intrigued by her neighbour -that would be down to all the effort James put in to getting her attention and interest! – and once she was involved she was determined to help him however she could.
The story had sweetness, humour, heart and heat. This pair together were fab and I was rooting for them from the minute Harper started softening towards James.
This is a really good series – I have to admit I’ve only read a couple of the books so far – but I’m looking forward to meeting and catching up with more of Erin’s Boys of the Big Easy!,
A solid 4* read.
Getting off Easy is book one of the Boys of the Big Easy series. Coming from Erin Nicholas, I knew it was going to be fun, laughable, unique and all out good. Not to mention, when you put the Big Easy in the mix, all bets are off.
James is the boy next door that is all man. As I read, a new appreciation came about for this fireman. Not only is he that alpha male, but he is smart also…almost to the point of being calculating.
Harper is the girl next door and the best way to describe her would be “strong independent woman.” She carries herself as she needs to and maintains her life as she needs. Of course being a professor requires her to keep all her facilities properly aligned.
So when the boy next door met the girl next door, what CAN’T happen? Their coming-to-know-each-other moments were many and varied, but as they grew to know the other, their sparks only grew stronger. It was heartwarming to see them lean on each other for support when needed, and push the other when required.
Erin Nicholas has done an excellent job of bringing passion and the allure of New Orleans to this story while driving me to cheer for these two as they grew together. I look forward to the next installment of this series and happily give 5-stars to this story.
Getting Off Easy by Erin Nicholas is the fourth book in her Boys of the Big Easy series. Set in New Orleans this is the story of firefighter and jazz musician, James Reynaud and his adorable neighbor, linguistics professor Harper Broussard. James has made a habit of asking his neighbor for help whenever people give things to take care of. A ficus tree, a lizard, a dog, a baby… (record scratches…) wait – you say – a baby? Yes – James finds a baby on his doorstep and pulls Harper in to help. The ensuing emotion and drama that unfolds… Who is the mother… Is James the father… Can Harper and James really become parents to this newborn? Sexy and emotional, told in dual POV and wrapped up in a beautiful but different happy ending – Erin Nicholas has fast become a must-read author for me! Enjoy!
The latest from one of my favorite authors is another winner. I enjoyed everything about this book from the characters to their banter to the plot and the twists that went with it. Let’s just say it’s not your usual straightforward romance. It’s witty, clever, and oh, so steamy. I continue to enjoy visiting New Orleans with this author and look forward to the next time. Don’t miss this one. For further thoughts, please visit my blog at Fireflies and Free Kicks Fiction Reviews. This review was written based on a digital ARC of the bool.
OMG I loved every single moment of this book so much and that’s kind of rare! I mean there is usually a moment or two in a book where I’m like really? But that did not happen here AT ALL. Erin Nicholas is one of my favorite romance authors and every time I think I’ve found my favorite couple of hers, she introduces another one even more amazing. Not sure how she does it, but I am game for her to keep it up!! I am so glad James got his own book!! From the get-go I could see that the kind of relationship James (the hot firefighter/musician) and Harper (the French college professor) were headed for was going to be one for the ages. From the flirting and banter for months and how he would approach Harper as a neighbor looking for help, I just knew there was no way I could not love them. I honestly adore them and their whole story and everything they did for each other and the others people (not even just people) in their lives. What an amazing couple who are totally perfect for each other!! Just wow!! I loved this book!
Every book in this series is an absolute delight! Erin Nicholas is sweet talking her readers once again with book four in her much adored Boys of the Big Easy series and GETTING OFF EASY continues to thrill!
James Reynaud is one of those characters that keeps a reader smiling the whole way through the story. He’s funny, he’s sexy and he’s got just about the best heart around.
Harper Broussard kept us guessing for a little while to figure out if she was going to let James woo her into loosening up her uptight attitude or not … and once she did, she added so much to his story!
I recommend this book and highly recommend the entire series to anyone wanting a down home feel to a cast of great characters with lots of sass, lots of heart and a whole lot of sexy goodness! This wasn’t my favorite book in the series because I found myself wanting a little more here and there, but it was still so much fun to read and added a nice dimension to the series as a whole.
New Orleans firefighter jazz pianist and man about town, James Reynaud, is a fixer. But now he’s fixated on his neighbor linguist Professor Harper Broussard. She’s clearly not so fixated on him. James is spending much more time than normal in woeing Harper. And he’s slowly becoming important to her. Their lives are becoming interwoven. Harper is a quiet introvert but she’s intelligent, capable and organized. James is extroverted, loved by all and the first one people come to to make things right. So when a baby in a basket appears on his doorstep will it be one too many rescues? A touching, loving and heartwarming love story. Steamy, funny and unexpected it will leave you wanting more of James, Harper and their unconventional family and friends.
For those who’ve read the Boys of the Big Easy series before this new release will be like revisiting family with getting an update on beloved characters and previous HEAs. For those who are new to this world you’ll find yourself quickly captivated by this sweet and sexy tale of opposites attracting. From the first page to the last you’ll find a charming storyline and a crackling couple who are oh so good together despite their differences.
James Reynaud is a sexy and charming firefighter, dependable and supportive, someone who always seems to get what he wants when it comes to women. Women are drawn to him and he’s had numerous relationships over the years, but when it comes to the slightly-older Harper he feels uncertain as she’s nothing like the women he normally falls for. Because of that theirs isn’t an easy road to HEA as they spend some time dancing around each other, dealing with all the roadblocks fate throws their way. The biggest issue he needs her help with involves a baby left on his doorstep, a baby whose past is a mystery that is dealt with during the latter part of the book in a satisfying mystery that brought them even closer together. From the first page to the last I found James utterly endearing, a bit flirty, with a quick and easy smile. He’s nurturing too and was the perfect person to take care of a baby as I loved the soft side it brought out in him, a side that made him even more manly in my eyes.
The baby was also the perfect lure to bring Harper Broussard fully into James’s life. To herself and the outside world Harper is an intelligent, clinical college professor who plans for everything. Her attraction to James though wasn’t planned for and it throws her for quite a loop as she fought her attraction from the start and had him jumping through a few hoops along the way. She’s also rather inexperienced when it comes to men, preferring romance books to reality, which has her overthinking their connection at times. She never saw herself as nurturing either but caring for the baby alongside James brought out a gentle and caring side to her, a side she thought herself incapable of. With each turn of the page I grew to like Harper even more, I liked seeing her become more empowered and self-assured in a relationship that made both of them better.
This was a fast-paced story with a near-perfect hero and a heroine who’s very worthy of him. Their connection is crackling with an entertaining dance of opposites attracting that had me turning the pages frantically. Along with a sweet and sensual romance was a bit of suspense that nicely kept me on edge in a HEA that was tied up beautifully courtesy of an epilogue full of heart and soul. Alongside the delightful main couple were the couples from previous installments. I loved their playfulness and their support, a feeling of family that they engendered and that brought a tear to my eye. This story was a wonderful way to end Ms. Nicholas’s satisfying series, and after a quick re-read of these four books, I look forward to what comes next!
Love James and Harper, their court ship is so adorable and sexy. All those door knocks lead to adventures and love
This is the first book I have read by Erin and I really enjoyed it!! I will definitely be checking out more books by her especially the one’s that are in this series!! And even though this is technically book 4 I didn’t feel as I was missing anything so they are definitely stand alones and I’m going to guess surrounding individual couples. I feel so hard for James from the very beginning and am so glad he stayed such a good guy all the way through. And although Harper is a professor, which most of us are not..lol. She does love her books like we all do so we do feel that kinship with her. And even though I kinda figured out what might possibly be going on it was still a great book. I definitely would recommend this book!! – By Tina
I loved everything about this book. From the characters to the heartwarming story line.
This was the first Boys of the Big Easy book that I have read. As with other Erin Nicholas books, This was a very good and enjoyable book. James, a firefighter and musician, enlists his neighbor Harper, a professor, to help him take care of things…. a tree, lizard and a dog.. as a means to see her and flirt with her. So when a baby is left outside his door, he is again knocking on her door. I really liked these characters- James is a caretaker and will do what is necessary, while Harper sees herself as a planner. This story is their journey coming together to take care and fall in love with the baby in addition to each other. Definitely worth the read.
5 Stars
This story has it all, the sexy firefighter across the hall who seems too good to be true and the smart and intriguing professor who enjoys his sense of humor and easy going personality more than she imagined. As these two are constantly thrown together (thanks to some very inventive situations by James) both of them begin to see things in one another, and themselves, that weren’t so obvious. This book has a sexiness and humor about it that will keep you turning pages nonstop. My favorite thing about this couple though is the sweetness, laughs and beautifully written self discovery each of them experiences while falling in love with each other, and a baby they never knew they wanted in their lives.

Erin Nicholas has never written a word I didn’t love. Hell, I’d probably love her grocery list. She is a BORN storyteller and Getting Off Easy is proof of that.
Love…love…love this sweet heartwarming romance read.
A hot firefighter and a linguistics professor, yup I love this couple, and because I’m a sucker for a firefighter, I’m in love from the first chapter, and then there’s an olive tree and a bearded dragon and a dog and last but not least there’s a super cute baby, oh yeah this book has complicated written all over it and I enjoyed every chapter of it.
Sweet story, amazing characters, lots of laughters and sweetness and touching moments, yes this book definitely a MUST-READ if you’re a romance lovers.
James Reynaud is half in love with his too good for him, too smart for him neighbor, Harper Broussard. He loves digging beneath her prim outer facade and seeing her blush, seeing her soften toward him every time he manufactures a reason for knocking on her door with another request for help. Somehow, someway, they’ve developed a friendship based on her helping him care for things, for pets, while he’s on shift at the fire station, but it just may be too big a request to ask for her help with the baby that’s been left on his doorstep.
Harper’s at her best when she’s got a plan. So when James needs her help with a baby (a BABY!) of all things, she’s really not sure if she’s up for the task as she’s been up for the task of caring for his plant, his lizard, and his dog. But as the days wind by, somehow she and James seamlessly become parents to little Isaac and their hearts are becoming entwined, not only with each other, but with little Isaac too. What will happen if Isaac’s mother shows up? Is James Isaac’s father? And how will that affect their newfound love?
Awwww, that’s what I was doing while reading James and Harper’s love story. He’s got to be one of the sweetest, swooniest characters I have read in a good long while. I love how easy-going but determined he is with Harper, and how he gets her to see herself the way he sees her, that she is as much a nurturer and good with going with the flow as he is. I absolutely love these two, their love story, their friends, their baby, and the community they surround themselves with. The Boys of the Big Easy is such a great series and I cannot wait for more!
This book was such a fun read! I absolutely loved James and Harper, their banter and sizzling chemistry kept me turning the pages and never wanting it to end. Erin Nicholas has become an automatic one-click author for me and Getting Off Easy was a big example of why.
Wonder add to Bad Boys of the Big Easy!
Fun read!
