Back at Oxford for her reunion, Harriet Vane, Lord Peter’s beloved, finds herself in mortal danger
Since she graduated from Oxford’s Shrewsbury College, Harriet Vane has found fame by writing novels about ingenious murders. She also won infamy when she was accused of committing a murder herself. It took a timely intervention from the debonair Lord Peter Wimsey to save her from the gallows, and … from the gallows, and since then she has devoted her spare time to resisting his attempts to marry her. Putting aside her lingering shame from the trial, Harriet returns to Oxford for her college reunion with her head held high–only to find that her life is in danger once again.
The first poison-pen letter calls her a “dirty murderess,” and those that follow are no kinder. As the threats become more frightening, she calls on Lord Peter for help. Among the dons of Oxford lurks a killer, but it will take more than a superior education to match Lord Peter and the daring Harriet.
Gaudy Night is the 12th book in the Lord Peter Wimsey Mysteries, but you may enjoy the series by reading the books in any order.
This ebook features an illustrated biography of Dorothy L. Sayers including rare images from the Marion E. Wade Center at Wheaton College.

Long-winded
I’ve read the entire Lord Wimsey series and loved them all, but especially the ones including Harriet Vane.
Dorothy Sayer never disappoints! Love this book.
I love Dorothy Sayers, and of her Peter Wimsey books my favorites are those that include his courtship of Harriet Vane. This book is the culmination of that courtship and a very satisfying read.
There’s a reason people are still reading this author.
I enjoyed this book but if you’ve never read any of the Lord Peter Wimsey books, I wouldn’t start with this one. There’s a lot more philosophical discussion in this than the other books, probably because of the setting at Oxford. It is one of the Lord Peter and Harriet Vane books and does show some progress in their relationship. One thing now …
This is the best of the Peter Wimsey books by Dorothy Sayers. Maybe because Harriet Vane outshines Lord Peter.
In my top ten all time mysteriest
Like Dorothy Sayers, but I could not get interested enough to finish. It was boring
This is my favorite Dorothy Sayers mystery!
Not one of her better Peter Whimsy books.
A classic mystery vintage mystery from one of the greats. My favorite in the Peter Whimsey series
Absolutely LOVE anything by Dorothy Sayers! Books you can read over and over again and enjoy every time.
I enjoy the Lord Peter Whimsey books.. the history, the light who-done-it and the wit. Well written and fun
Love Sayers’ books.
A mystery is built on whether a woman should strive to build an academic career or be a wife and mother. Highlights the pros and cons of both and suggests a middle course. And Harriet finally begins to trust Peter!
A mystery, a detective story, and battles of heart vs. mind. All in an academic setting, with language to match. A favorite with staying power; have read this many times over the past 20 years.
I love the Peter Whimsey series and have read everyone from the library originally. I own a copy of each title in print, and have them in kindle for travel purposes, they are always worth a re-read, and my favorites are the ones with Harriet and Murder must advertise.
