“Fury of a Phoenix takes the best blend of action adventure, urban fantasy, and the supernatural all with a dash of magic and the paranormal that leaves you unable to put it down.”~ Top 1000 Reviewer“I knew the sins of my past would call to collect what was left of my soul. If I’d known the price I’d pay, I would’ve sacrificed more to stay hidden from the magic.” In the middle of Wyoming–away … magic.”
In the middle of Wyoming–away from the abnormals of the world–I thought I was free and clear. I started a new life. Found a love I’d never known in a husband, and a son who was my everything.
And in a blinding instant, that life was stolen from me.
The rage of a grieving mother is an ugly beast. More so when she has the skills and killer instinct to back up the wrath and the knowledge that an accident was anything but.
Once more, I will pick up my guns. This time to hunt those who took my husband’s and son’s lives.
Let them see the assassin, trained to kill abnormals, stalk the shadows again.
Let them see the Phoenix rise from the fragments of a broken life as she burns with a fury that cannot be contained.
Let the killing games begin.
~An electric and gritty first in the series from the indomitable Shannon Mayer. I found myself laughing, and cheering for the sharp-tongued, edgy Phoenix as she hunted those who’d destroyed her world~ P.K Read

Audiobook review: A killer hidden for more than a decade comes back for one simple thing, revenge. Even though the stories are nothing other than revenge, I couldn’t help but think of the movie John Wick. As like many other Mayer books, Fury of a Phoenix is non-stop action. The person you should hate, a killer, you will actually be rooting for. A first for me! The narrator did a great job! I’m looking forward to book 2.
I love action packed, and a reason for it to be. This book is definitely it, and the series is now on my list to buy. The world created by Mayer is realistic, and hidden – which makes it all the more original. Remember how everyone cheered for the assassin in The Professional? Yeah, the reader is going to do that with this one. Every kill is worthy of applause, every hesitation worth the cringe. The MC is great, and you empathize. Loved every page.
I am a big fan of Shannon and this book didn’t disappoint. I was a little surprised how this book went. It was very deep in emotions. Nix is a very dark woman. I find she has a lot to hide. The story unfolds into a lot of different areas. I found myself rooting for her and some of the sidekicks she picks up along the way. I don’t know how I feel about her “friends”. This book has all kinds of action and bad ass fighting. It is a dark fantasy. You can’t go wrong with this book.
Amazing writing
Another amazingly strong and complex female lead from Ms Mayer. I love the back story here and am hoping to see more of Nix.
I can’t wait for the next one!
Unique female character. Some parts are a little predictable
I cannot wait for the next in this series.
Listen I laughed, I cried like a baby, I was ready for revenge just as much as Nix was and all I can say is if you aren’t reading this series what are you doing with your life?
I will admit this was not a book I would normal pick up or buy. I actually received it in a Caffeine & Legends book box and I must say I did enjoy it. First of all, my misconception was that crap was about to burn down because I was thinking phoenix like Jean Grey. Instead of mutants you get abnormals but I’m still trying to figure out if Nix is an abnormal or not. She is bad a$$ though.
So after Phoenix (Nix) husband and son are killed she turns back into her old self to seek vengeance against the people who killed them. As it turns out her husband had a secret that she knew nothing about which leads back to her secret past. She was raised as a mob assassin that killed abnormals for her father’s rise to the top of the food chain. When she got tired of being used as a puppet she ran away and decided to carve out a different life for herself hence the husband, son, and nice life in Wyoming.
I did enjoy the action but it was more of a build up to her skills which are not fully seen in this book. I know there are two remaining books in the series so maybe I will get the full experience of “The Phoenix” in the remaining books. One thing that did bother me was there was no elaboration on the abnormals because the freaky bird chick just didn’t sit right with me. However, overall it was a nice read.
This Is An Epic Supernatural Mob Revenge Read!
Extremely Tense & Emotional. 4.5 Stars
Fury of a Phoenix (Nix, #1)
Wow, this was unexpected & so emotional!
Bea is a very socially awkward Wife & Mum. She absolutely adores her son, Bear, he’s the most kind hearted human she’s ever met, her husband Justin, is kind & loving, he’d helped her adjust to her new life. Bear was the image of her Father though & he is the most vile human!! He’s a Human Mob Boss but wants into the big leagues with the Abnormals. He made an actual deal with the Devil to gain growing money & power as well as three Guardian’s!!
When she was a child she was called Phoenix. Her Dad had four older children by his first wife, three boys & one other girl, Bianca. It was her death that woke Phoenix up to just how diabolical & dire her life was. Her father had let her train to become his Enforcer/Assassin. She was deadly & ruthless & she was losing herself to it all. So she escaped & went into hiding with some help! But now they’d called her back, she’s not the quiet Bea anymore. Who ever came after her family should be running scared, because the Phoenix will be setting their World on fire!!
This is an unsettling but compelling read. I had so much compassion for Nix, from her childhood traumas to finding love & happiness, she’d had to constantly battle for a place in the world & to try & keep them safe! I’m intrigued to see where the Author takes this fascinating story!

If you’re faint of heart, this would not be a series for you. There are deaths throughout the book, and you can see where Mayer gets her reputation for killing off characters. Nix is wicked, cool, and inspiring in spite of everything she faces from the very first page of the book. Hvam is a fantastic narrator for this book because she puts so much passion behind it, and her voice just sounds fierce which matches Nix and the plot perfectly. There’s tons of mystery and intrigue and captivates you from the beginning. It really reminds me of a female version of the John Wick movies which I love. And when it comes to Mayer’s writing style, she’s unmatched in the way she wraps up each chapter. It amazes me how she ends each chapter with finality and, more often than not, powerful statements hooking you further into each chapter. I literally cannot wait to jump into the next book!
Awesome read as usual, on the 3rd book now, love the characters, monsters and journey Nix takes to work around her royally screwed up family and friends, most of us can relate too. She kicks some asses, takes names and sets on a mission to save her son from her sick twisted father…Nothing like justice being served, and a predator getting his or her due….love it! Oh and I cannot leave out the talking guns, love them….what a hoot!
This is my new favorite. Crying so hard it hurt and root for Nix our loud! Follow her as she destroys those who dare mess with her family!
First book in a brand new series in urban fantasy. This was a whole new experience to me and I loved it! It was a great mix of abnormal vs normal, mystery, thrill and action. It captivated me from the beginning to the end with all twists and turns keeping me on the edge guessing, hoping and proving me wrong most of times. That’s why I loved this so much!
I love Nix, the strong highly skilled assassin who escaped once that harsh world her father created but now she is back for revenge, and that is the dish better served cold!
All the characters are unique, even the talking tools Dinah & Eleanor and Lynx!
I’m glad I have the next book already so I only have to wait for final one.
Can’t recommend this book enough. I enjoyed it Thoroughly. Loved the talking guns. So realistic and completely engrossing.
I have read a lot of this authors work. This may be one of the best
My after read note says very bloody but well written.
I loved the book and was upset that book 2 is not a ebook for Barnes and noble.
Fun, easy read.
