In this extraordinary fantasy epic, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Dresden Files leads readers into a world where the fate of the realm rests on the shoulders of a boy with no power to call his own… For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies—elementals of … the furies—elementals of earth, air, fire, water, wood, and metal. But in the remote Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans’ most savage enemy—the Marat horde—return to the Valley, Tavi’s courage and resourcefulness will be a power greater than any fury, one that could turn the tides of war…

Read the entire Codex Alera series.
One of the best stories I have ever read. Enchanting. Couldn’t get enough. Best read of the year.
Loved this world and read all the Furies books. Have recommended them to family and friends.
Intriguing, world with interesting characters and powers. Unfortunately It’s disappointing when all the main characters almost die in extreme action. But they are always miraculously healed again and again.
A varied cast of characters that go from the frying pan into the fire throughout the book. Imaginative writing that’s so involving, you can’t wait to turn the page to see what happens next.
The whole series is uplifting and adventurous. Please read them you will love them.
HBO could do worse than this series as a potential Game of Thrones replacement. Lots of intrigue and a different kind of magic system.
Excellent character development. Entirely different from Butcher’s DRESDEN FILES books, but this shows the same skillful plot, character, and world development.
I really liked this fantasy from Jim Butcher, even though it is very different from his Dresden books. As soon as I finished one, I could hardly wait to go on the the next. My only regret was finishing the whole series too quickly. Wanted more like these!
As a Jim Butcher “Harry Dresden” fan, I was curious to see if this was truly a totally different kind of book. IT WAS! Ancient times, wonderful creatures, well rounded and complex characters. The action is non-stop. I read this books several years ago in hardback, I’ve now purchased it for Kindle and plan to re-read it soon.
Love anything by Butcher but this series is definitely one of my favorites
Great book! Have read it 5 times.
I will read anything Jim Butcher writes.
This book is a great introduction into this series. It opens the world before you, shows you the rules of said world and helps you invest in characters that you will come to love… or love to hate! One of my favorite book series, and this is the one that starts it all!
Started slow but got better towards the end. Solid story. =)
Excellent series, well worth your time, characters abound, you fall in love with them and the jeopardy, is continuous thrilling, and very real, couldn’t ask for better villains their awesome!
Have read much of this series and found them all entertaining.
A really good story with engaging characters. I’ve read the series several times and always feel like I’m revisiting friends
Butcher rocks! Totally different from The Dresden Files but just as well written and developed.
One of the best opening books of a series i have ever read. Character development is awesome. I have read and listened to all six books and all I can say is Mr. Butcher where is number 7????
