Jaxon Jennings. Cop. Homicide detective. Partner. He always had your back and rarely made mistakes.
Until the death of his son. Until the night he couldn’t save him. Until everything he held dear was taken away from him.
Now, a shell of a man, his reckless actions mark him as a burn-out. A Loner. A dangerous man whom many in the Fairfax County Police Department cannot trust. The criminals he … The criminals he pursues in the suburbs of Washington D. C. are nothing more than ways to bide his time until his next drink, next fix, next loss of control. His past haunts him no matter how hard he tries to hide from it.
So, when a boy’s body shows up floating under the ice of a quiet neighborhood pool, Jaxon finds himself immersed in a world where the ghosts of his past feel too close for comfort. A psychopath is using the innocent in ways that appear familiar.
Jaxon’s past is catching up with him. And the anger that seethes below the surface threatens to destroy not only his life, but the lives of a group of kids somehow connected with him. The answers are locked, frozen in the part of his past he refuses to confront. But people are counting on him. And he must do anything to save them.
Anything. Even if it costs him his life.

“Frozen Past” by Richard C. Hale will surprise you. At first it seemed like the book might turn out to be a suspenseful story targeted at high school kids. The intensity, however, started to shift about 6% of the way into the book. After that, Hale skillfully drew in adult characters whose destinies were aligned with those of the kids and who were …
I really enjoyed this book. However I did find myself putting it aside several times to read one of my other books and coming back to it, it wasn’t boring or bad, that’s not it, it just had that flavor of perhaps a young adult novel and I do read those but sometimes my brain simply has to be a bit more challenged.
The story premise whilst not …
Close to five stars but a couple parts just didn’t match.
Believable characters, and suspenseful.
Never finished it, so not believable couldn’t get past that fact.
I’ve had this book for a long time but never read it. It was a gruesome serial killer story but all the horrible carnage ties together in the end. I’m not a fan of serial killer stories, but if this was the one I was going to read, it was a very good one.
Just okay
Quality work
Good read
For me, it was a awkward start. I am glad I continued reading because it soon became riveting and couldn’t put it down.
A tale of terror I couldn’t put down! This book grabbed me while I read the prologue. You know what I mean. It was so scary I had to keep reading to find out what was going to happen on the next page. Wow. Great story with excellent characters. You really need to read this. Great job Richard Hale. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this …
An adolescent prank turns deadly in this well written mystery. Hard to put down.
Love all of Richard Hale’s books!
Action-packed crime thriller – a real page-turner, with wonderful characters, especially the kids. Great read!
Kept me interest, made me want to finish a chapter
Do
Did not want to put it down
Great read
Surprising ending
If your like lots of violence and a relentlessly “flawed hero” who makes you want to smack him up the side of head and tell him to grow up, you’ll enjoy this book. I personally found him tiresome, but soldiered on until the end. And I almost made it to the last page thinking I’d wrongly pegged a character as a villain at the begging and the …
Mr. Hale writes especially interesting tales. Have not read one that I did not find intriguing and this was no exception. Not a waste of time. Very engaging.
Really enjoyed this book. Found myself pulling for the main female character.
A really good read. Enjoyed the characters.
