Frozen in Time is a gripping true story of survival, bravery, and honor in the vast Arctic wilderness during World War II, from the author of New York Times bestseller Lost in Shangri-La.On November 5, 1942, a US cargo plane slammed into the Greenland Ice Cap. Four days later, the B-17 assigned to the search-and-rescue mission became lost in a blinding storm and also crashed. Miraculously, all … also crashed. Miraculously, all nine men on board survived, and the US military launched a daring rescue operation. But after picking up one man, the Grumman Duck amphibious plane flew into a severe storm and vanished.
Frozen in Time tells the story of these crashes and the fate of the survivors, bringing vividly to life their battle to endure 148 days of the brutal Arctic winter, until an expedition headed by famed Arctic explorer Bernt Balchen brought them to safety. Mitchell Zuckoff takes the reader deep into the most hostile environment on earth, through hurricane-force winds, vicious blizzards, and subzero temperatures.
Moving forward to today, he recounts the efforts of the Coast Guard and North South Polar Inc. – led by indefatigable dreamer Lou Sapienza – who worked for years to solve the mystery of the Duck’s last flight and recover the remains of its crew.
A breathtaking blend of mystery and adventure Mitchell Zuckoff’s Frozen in Time: An Epic Story of Survival and a Modern Quest for Lost Heroes of World War II is also a poignant reminder of the sacrifices of our military personnel and a tribute to the everyday heroism of the US Coast Guard.

Zuckoff is a journalism professor over at BU. He’s worked with BB directly since the beginning. Really excited to see one of his going to Bestsellers!
I am not a history buff but this was a great read for me. Found out a lot of things I had no knowledge about. Thumbs up!
Very exciting true story of WWll. I enjoyed learning of the soldiers experience and the exploration of the remains at the same time. Also the book was packed with photos which does not always happen in a kindle ebook. I have also looked on the internet for more up-to-date information regarding the explorations currently happening regarding the incidents written about in the book.
Good history/story book.
Excellent story about a little known event.
A well-written story of survival, rescue, and tragedy on the Greenland icecap in 1942 and the attempted present day retrieval of a Coast Guard aircraft and the boddies of the crew.
I couldn’t put this book down. Eagerly awaiting future updates.
The research into and telling the stories of the fliers struggling to survive in the Greenland winter was very well done. But I found the relating of the recent search for the planes and the remains of those who were not rescued to be a distraction at best. The author made the retelling of the events of the early ’40s not only interesting, but exciting. He was able to give the reader a feeling of having to gotten to know the men marooned in the icy winter. But the story of the trials of trying to move an expedition to find the planes and remains seemed to be pretty flat. That seemed strange given that the author was personally involved in those himself. Those people seemed very two-dimensional and difficult to relate to. I would much rather he had omitted the modern day story altogether.
Nature: 1 – Mankind: 0
The author lays out a compelling look at a WWII tragedy that played out far from any battlefield. Warplanes being ferried from the US to Europe had to cross the vast, frozen expanse of Greenland’s ice sheet.
Some of them didn’t make it.

I’ve been to Greenland , flew helicopters up there . The book is well written
Covers all theories of the cause.
An excellent record of brave soldiers frozen and trapped in Greenland in WWII and the efforts to rescue them.
What a story of daring on the part of the rescuers and strength on the part of the victims. Very inspiring!
This story of death and survival on Greenland’s icecap is totally based on research and reality. It is riveting and believable and informative. I was fascinated to learn so much about glaciers and how one might survive such a brutal climate.
AAAA!
The book follows the exploits of the early explorers of the Arctic – specifically those looking for the “Northern Passage” across the frozen seas above Canada.
Failures and tribulations haunted the original explorers and those that followed looking for them over the course of 100 + years.
Great book-combines exploration in below frigid Greenland with valiant efforts to rescue 3 downed planes. also much info about 1930 thru 1945 military and civilian planes.
Good character building and analyses of all main characters.
Interesting insight into the challenges of exploring the Arctic regions.
Either of the separate events in this book would make a fabulous movie! The downed aircraft of WWll and the rescue attempts or the more recent attempt to locate the site under ice. Great men equals a great read.
hard to put down
