Eight-week-old Australian Shepherd Kaya is kidnapped by a nasty coyote to be food for his mate and puppies. Instead, the loving mother raises Kaya with her own pups. But as hard as she tries, Kaya can’t completely fit in—she can’t kill prey or stay awake for night hunts. Why can’t she make herself a true coyote? Constantly criticized by her coyote father, Kaya finds support in her new mother and … and siblings. She also figures out how to contribute through teamwork with her brother and sister. Trapped by a dog rescue, Kaya re-enters the human world and learns the differences between how dogs and coyotes live. When freed to roam again, does she return to her forest freedom—or remain with her farm family? Can Kaya forever straddle between the Wild and the Mild?

Told from Kaya’s point of view, From Wild to Mild by Sunny Weber is a wonderfully sweet and easy reading adventure story of a kidnapped puppy and how he makes hard decisions in order to find his place in the world.

Kaya is just a pup, too young to be afraid of the creature that approaches her, and the coyote snatches her up, proud of an easy meal to take home to his hungry family. Things don’t go so well when his litter mate refuses to eat her and instead takes her in. That saying, you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, also applies to Kaya the pup. She has dogs instincts and can’t seem to find her way in the wild life of her coyote family, no matter how hard she tries. Things become even more complicated when Kaya is returned to the world of humans and has to learn a whole new way of living.
I became so wrapped up in Kaya’s story that I often forgot the character’s involved were animals. I could easily relate to her confusion, fears and determination as she tries to find out where she belongs.
From Wild To Wild was an emotional and uplifting read. As with the first two books, I was teary eyed many times. I also felt proud of Kaya. She wasn’t a quitter and kept trying until she finally found her place. And, as with the other books, I’m happy to be able to recommend this to readers of all ages.
Thank you IRead and the author for a complimentary copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
From Wild To Mild:
A Dog In Two Worlds
By: Sunny Weber
From Wild To Mild is the third book from Sunny Weber my ten year old son and I have read together. We have loved each book, and From Wild To Mild was as enjoyable as its counterparts. This review is broken into two sections: my thoughts and my son’s thoughts.
* MY REVIEW*
In this story a puppy, Kaya, is stolen by a male coyote and intended to be a meal. The coyote’s mate, however, takes Kaya in to raise as one of her own. Kaya is happy with her coyote siblings but never truly has the feeling of belonging. Through unforseen events, Kaya ends up with humans. Although she imagined the worst, the humans are actually kind and loving, and Kaya enjoys living on their farm where she meets other friendly animals. One day, Kaya is reunited with her coyote siblings. Although she is happy to see them, Kaya is torn between two worlds. Does she belong in the wild roaming free? Does she belong with her human family? Maybe Kaya is a bit of both worlds. The wild coyote life will always be part of Kaya’s identity, as will her current farm life. I love the insightful lessons Sunny Weber weaves into every story. We all come from somewhere. The place where you grow up and the people who raise you become home-a fundamental part of who you are. You might move far away and meet great new people, but home goes with you. The trick is finding a balance between past and present, so you can become exactly who you are supposed to be in the big wild world or at home.
*MY SON’S REVIEW*
From wild to mild is a great book, just like the other books in the series/trilogy. Kaya is taken from a shelter, then from her owners,by a mean male coyote for food for its mate and puppies,but the mother coyote won’t have kaya eaten. She ends up adopting it, but later on kaya gets captured in a trap and is adopted by more humans, who have a farm. The people are very nice and so are the other animals on the farm. They later adopt an abused baby sheep, but the mean coyote father wants to eat the livestock. The other coyote puppies meet up with kaya one day, and they are so glad to be reunited. The rest you’ll need to know yourself. I recommend this book for anyone, but this a little sad of a book in the end, but turns out okay. Thanks for reading this review,my fifth review!
