From Flame and Ash takes place a year after From Breath and Ruin ends. Its a little slow at the beginning but once it takes off it hard to put down. Great action and suspense, the explanations of the new territories Lyric visits in this book are extraordinary.
Lyric, now 18, has spent the last year in the human realm training with Alura and going to college. Although, going to college is kind of pointless since her destiny is in the Mason realm. Its time to go back though and she is as nervous and unsure about her future as she ever was. Lyric has spent the last year reading about the history of the Mason realm through a book Rosamond gave her and training with the elements that she does have. She has missed Rose and Rhodes and while she has kept in contact with Rosamond through letters she hasn’t heard from Rhodes or Easton for that matter.
Lyric spends a good while in the Fire Estate training and learning from new friends Wyn, Teagan, Arwin and of course when Easton decided that she was worth the time. When Lyric is summoned to the Lumiere Kingdom is when things take a turn for the worse. Things are never how they seem and when she enters the water kingdom something is off as a sense of takes hold of Lyric and the others. It seems that not everyone wants the Spirit Priestess there and Lyric along with others have to fight for their lives and the lives of everyone in the Mason realm.
While some questions from From Breath and Ruin were answered in book two so many more questions have come up….
From Flame and Ash is Book 2 of the Elements of Five series by Carrie Ann Ryan. While most of her books can be read as a standalone, this series should be read in order. This story picks up where Book 1 left off after Lyric took off some time to recuperate and is now returning to the Maison Realm. It was a fast-paced, edge of your seat, action-packed story that I didn’t want to end. I have 3 words for Ms. Ryan with regard to this series: “must write faster!”
This is the continuation of Lyrics journey and I absolutely loved the way it unfolded. I loved the way Carrie Ann Ryan makes a reader fall into a journey. I loved everything about this book. So many enjoyable moments and the characters are amazing.
Lyric’s journey continues and it is full of danger and mystery because nothing is ever as it seems in the strange realm of the Wielders. I loved seeing Lyric make new friends in the Obscurité kingdom and reconnecting with those on the Lumière side. All the secondary characters are wonderfully written and engaging in their own right. Except for the ones that have gone over to the dark side, so to speak, corrupted by their hunger for power.
Neither Lyric nor the reader’s emotions are spared in this second book in the series. Things always get worse before they get better, never more so than when you’re faced with a prophecy on the scale of the one about the Spirit Priestess and Lyric gets that lesson impressed on her in the worst way. For every question she gets resolved, more new ones pop up. As soon as one enemy is defeated, an even more dangerous one comes out of the woodwork.
The world-building and mythology in this series is amazing! I very much enjoyed this story and am more than a little curious to see how everything will turn out in the end. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Lyric’s love interest, please let her have (that particular) someone by her side.
The not-knowing is killing me. I need the third book ASAP!
This is book two in the Elements of Five Series and you should read this series in order. We pick up where book one left off. This series is for sure a page turner. I love Lyric and how strong she is with all she has to deal with. You never know what to expect from one page to another and what you expect will most likely be wrong. I love that Carrie Ann keeps us on our toes. I adore Easton and Rhodes and how protective they both are of Lyric and the tight knit group that has formed around her. I can’t wait to see where we are lead next in book 3 of this series.
OMG…From Flame and Ash is awesome! This is book #2 in the Elements of Five series and it picks up a year later when Lyric returns to the Maison Realm. If you love adventure…From Flame and Ash is a must read…it has action, dragons and new mystical creatures. Lyric unlocks more of her elements and nothing is the same. I cried, cursed and sighed in wonder throughout the book. New friendships are built and I can’t wait to see where they are headed next. Thank you for writing such an epic adventure, Carrie Ann Ryan and I can’t wait for the next book From Spirit and Binding!
Do you love Fantasy? YA? Did you read the first book? Then you need From Breath and Ruin!

This is definitely getting added to my favorites list!!! I loved EVERYTHING about this book. I’ve really been jonesing for something paranormal or fantasy and this definitely gave me my fix! I absolutely LOVE how Carrie Ann has written this series. You really feel like your are amongst the characters and living in this realm. It doesn’t feel like I’m reading anything that is fantasy either, because there’s such a “norm” about the way she writes their life and world.
We were left on an edge with the last book. Not a cliff, but a firm edge. We weren’t really sure where the story was going to take us. I love how we got to dive right back in, even if it was a year later. The transition was done beautifully! I was so excited to have Lyric go back to the Maison realm and figure out what her place is. She is so perfectly determined to help! The dedication she gave from the human world was so awesome. I love how she continued to train and learn. Seeing her grow was really beautiful. Then when she gets to the Maison realm, I was even more in love! It was as if she never left, and I absolutely adored the new characters Carrie Ann introduced. Wyn is definitely a favorite!
With this new transition also brought us more of Easton. I was super curious about this, and I still am!! There are SO MANY layers to Easton and his relationship with Lyric. We are sent in many spirals with these two!! Everything in the Obsurities Kingdom had me so excited. We met so many new characters and we learned so much. One of my favorite things about this series is the dedication of all of the people. These warriors are so special and believe so much in Lyric. Having that kind of support is so special, even if she doesn’t always see it that way.
All of this being said, there are so many secrets and so many insane things that happened. When we finally met up with Rhodes and his family so much happens!!! Seeing Rhodes again brought so many feelings, I really felt like I was in Lyrics shoes with her!! With the craziness that his family brought, this book took an AMAZING turn!! Seeing Lyric evolve throughout these events was mesmerizing. I really NEED to know where Carrie Ann is going to take us next. There’s a lot left out in the open and we aren’t really sure where things go. I CANNOT WAIT for more!!!
When I started reading I couldn’t put it down.Carrie Ann Ryan is magnifysent and amazing writer.I cannot wait to read more of there books.Keep up the great work. You should definitely read this book. Can’t wait for the next book.
I got totally pulled into this book world when we met Lyric in the first book, she was finding out more about herself in that one and now we get to see just what else this realm has to put her through so she can learn the other three elements .
Carrie Ann Ryan has an awesome way to build these worlds and make you want to live in them
Carrie Ann Ryan did it again, book two is even better than book one in this series. I loved this book. Very well written, wonderful characters and action packed. I would recommend reading this series.

WOW! From Flame and Ash is phenomenal. This book captivated and consumed me. Carrie Ann Ryan has outdone herself with this book. I loved this book, a definite one click.
Oh my book two was even better then book one! another fantastic book that I could not put down. Lyric is back in the Maison world to find her other elements and get the training she needs. She goes on another adventure. This time she has Easton and new friends at her side. This book is so intense, so good. I couldn’t out it down. I keep telling myself that some of the fallen will come back. At least one of them has too! I can not wait for book three and Lyrics next adventu
From Flame and Ash is book 2 in The Elements of Five Series. This is the continuation of Lyric’s story as she goes back to the Maison realm to learn more about her powers and to save her friends. This series is amazing and sucks you in, can’t wait for the next part.
Just as soon as I finished From Breath and Ruin, I knew I had to get my hands on this book! I absolutely could not wait to find out what happened to Lyric and her friends. As I’ve stated before, I’m not a huge fan of YA novels, but this author captured my attention, and dragged me in to this series! This story (actually, both books in the series, so far!) has to be one of the most intriguing, well written fantasy books that I’ve read to date.
This book takes place about a year after the ending of the first story. And Lyric is confused, adrift, not sure where to go, or what to do from here. It’s a waiting game, but she’s doing what she can to prepare herself for what she knows is coming. She knows it’s something big, momentous, dangerous, she just doesn’t know what is waiting for her, or if she is going to come out on the other side of it. She has been told that the is the prophesied one, the one to save their world, but she isn’t sure if she believes it, or if she is capable of doing what they are expecting of her. But she is going to try.
This book was absolutely amazing. The author did a fabulous job of conveying Lyric’s feelings of confusion, and helplessness throughout the book. I could completely feel what she was feeling, feel the anticipation for what was coming, feel the fear of the unknown. The events of this book kept me on my toes, kept my heart pounding from the first word, until the explosive ending that totally blew my mind! (I never, in a million years, saw that ending coming!) I will be waiting on tenterhooks for the next book in the series to hit my kindle!
The second book in the Elements of Five series is intriguing and at times overwhelming. Lyric’s journey continues in From Flame and Ash and is packed full of angst, highly emotional and will have you glued to the pages. A story that draws you into the magic and enigma of both worlds. Hold on tight as you experience the love and loss with Lyric as we wait for the next instalment of this amazing series.
I’m in awe with this world that Carrie Ann Ryan has created. This book takes place a year later from the first book, From Breath and Ruin. Every word, all the intricate details, its just phenomenal. Lyric has been on a path to find herself, come into her own, and heal from past traumas. Now things are getting real, much more real that what she was first thrown into from the first book. All of this pressure on her shoulders, but she’s still the 18 year old girl who deeply ponders about love and what her future might hold. She holds so much power, power that she doesn’t fully understand yet. But she’s not alone, despite her trying to keep everyone at arms length to protect them. This story is truly a captivating experience, a wild ride, and a young love story all wrapped in one. You don’t want to miss out on this one! Must read!
Book 2 in Carrie Ann Ryan’s new fantasy YA is now live & it’s a page-turner! “She thought she knew her place. Her future. She was wrong.”
Ohhh, the feeling of finding a phenomenal, fantastical, and utterly addicting new YA world. I LOVED getting to sink my teeth into Lyric’s journey in Book 1 of the Elements of Five, and Book 2 was just as engaging and entertaining a read for me. This time, Ms. Ryan jumps right into the guts of the story, though weaves in enough of the backstory to ensure that you have enough information from Book 1 to keep yourself on track with the plot. Lyric is pulled into the Obscurite realm pretty quickly, and finds herself having to trust a whole new group of allies to help her on her quest. While the tone is definitely fun and quippy and full of epic one-liners, there’s also enough of a maturity here in the writing to appeal to “bigger readers” like me. But the biggest plus for this book, at least for me, was the great cast of characters. Everyone was presented so well, and had inner lives of their own despite the POV being from Lyric’s head. Such a well-done world. I’m so hooked on Elements of Five!
