I have always enjoyed books about strong willed women who can kick ass but yet is protective of her child. Alys Xoticos-Quinn is one of those women. It gook a bit for me to get into the story, once I was into it, I couldn’t get out. The characters are amazing, the writing brings you in the story and it’s like your right there with them. Great book, great writing and great author
Strong Female Lead despite the circumstances.
One can only hope to parent so fearsomely. Against all odds and boundaries. Protect the potential of your innocent. At all costs.
I read this book in one go. It sucked me in from the start and couldn’t stop reading till I finished.
This story was so different, but really intriguing. It’s unusual to come across dystopian and fantasy together. I really enjoyed it. Looking forward to reading more by this author.
I recieved a copy through voracious readers in exchange for an honest review.
This is a mix between fantasy and dystopian.
The author mixes the two together in such a unique way it will keep you reading.
I enjoyed this book and would read more
A unique interpretation of fantasy and the apocalypse. Lots of action and twisty. Reminds me of C. L. Wilson. A good read.
A unique and interesting world and characters have been created in 2646. Alys is a bound, indentured servant, rather than face a death penalty for murder. I can only guess that her crime may have been in self defense. She is given missions to complete, to right wrongs outside the Union settlements, that land her in precarious situations. She is also pursued by “aliens” that live in the sky. This story is intense, suspenseful and full of twists and turns. I enjoyed this book very much.
I really liked this book! I loved the characters, as well as the storyline. I enjoyed the mixing of dystopian and magic. I will definitely be reading the next book in this series!
A feisty angry young woman enslaved and deprived of her child, forced to serve in a version of the United States formed in the wake of a magical apocalypse – the author managed to check off a number of points that attract my reading interest in that very short statement. Better yet, the author delivered a dystopian science fantasy thriller/mystery/romance that keeps the action rolling with lightning, political intrigue and conspiracy, and the struggle to uphold law and order to an unexpected and amazing crescendo. If you enjoyed Melissa Sercia’s Blood and Darkness series, I think you will like this series too.
I received an ARC via Voracious Readers and I am voluntarily leaving a review.
For me, characters rule, and I loved Alys. I highly recommend this action-packed story, full of powerful magic and complicated political games, all wound up in a fascinating alternate reality.
In the 27th century, magic and technology have merged together to create a dangerous world. After her conviction for a heinous crime, Alys Quinn is forced to work for the Union as an indentured servant. She’s a problem-solver of sorts, meant to bridge the gap between the different factions of residents and the ruling class. Alys is strong, impetuous, stubborn and unapologetic, the type of heroine this brutal world needs. But when a complicated investigation reveals some stark truths about the Union’s machinations, she’ll be forced to do everything in her power to save herself and her son.
I loved Alys, her complicated attitude, and her worldview. Emory and Walker balance out her edges, giving the reader insight into her past and her present. The worldbuilding is a little unsteady, so it may take the reader a bit of time to become fully immersed in Alys’s surroundings, but after the first 1/4 or so, the story really takes off. A great new series for fans of fantasy/dystopian/futuristic tales!
Once again, like reading Circle’s End, this story did take a bit of time to catch my interest and keep it.
I think my biggest complaint on this one is the lack of a built world for readers to understand and comprehend better.
The actual story is awesome, and once I got maybe to the 20% point I was able to keep going without getting distracted or bored.
