Kayo’s in town and ends up buying a female slave, Blue. The world is different as in the social and political structures. There is poverty, squalor and oppression. He would love to set Blue free but he has no more money and when he loses his mine, his creditors will take everything. This is a great read. Loved the storyline and the characters were very intense. Plenty of mystery, intrigue, horror, lies, sacrifice and steam. An enemy to lover story. I received an ARC copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

I don’t think I have every read a book with slaves in it, I could be wrong but I don’t recall it at the moment. I enjoyed this book because it emphasized the importance of hope and love. If you have those you can overcome anything. Mines are a dirty and hard business that take a lot of strength and character. For the hero to carry on a mission that he really did not want because he found it morally repugnant, took a different kind of fortitude. The way it all worked out in the end was wonderful. I have read other Julie Cohen books and this one does not disappoint.

A number of possible triggers in this plot but for those who can read it I suggest you do as it’s a wonderful dystopian romance.

Julie is a versatile writer. I have read different series written by her, and they are all very different. Yet despite the differences, she has no problem drawing the reader deep into the story.

Freedom Mine
This book explains well exactly why Kayo became the man he was and what his objectives were.
After losing a war and being captured and enslaved, Kayo’s master frees him. When his former master dies, he buys the property and continues his work to buying slaves and eventually let them free. When it’s time to buy another slave, he can’t let the small beautiful slave be sold to someone else. But Alli (Blue, because of her blue eyes) has been sold and re-sold. She was endured mental and physical brutality and abuse.
But in time Kayo gets through to her and she’s get the feeling of free and safe. In the meantime Kayo’s creditors are on his back and the mine isn’t producing. If he can’t pay, she and the others will be taken and re-sold.
Read the book and you’ll know how it’s ends.
The two deserved happiness. After losing a war and being captured and enslaved, Kayo’s master frees him. When his former master dies, Kayo buys the property, and continues his work. Buying slaves and eventually accruing enough money to free them. When it’s time to buy another slave, he can’t let the small beautiful slave be sold to someone else. But Alli has been a slave and sold and re-sold, and endured mental and physical brutality, and abuse. She doesn’t trust him and is just waiting for her chance to escape, even though she risks death if she does. But gradually Kayo gets through to her and she starts feeling free and safe, but Kayo’s creditors on his back and the mine isn’t producing. If he can’t pay, she and the others will be taken and re-sold. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review
From the way this book began, I thought l was going to hate Kayo when he bought Alli (Blue), he appeared to be an insensitive man, however, looks and words can be very deceptive. This book was so refreshing to read, in so much as the story was allowed to develop well before any relationships were explored. Kayo is a good man with the interests of his ‘slaves’ very much at the centre of all that he did. This book explains well exactly why Kayo became the man he was and what his objectives were. I really hope that Jace gets his own HEA too, the same way that Kayo and Alli did. Loved this book.

I have read quite a few books from this author. I really enjoyed this book. Picked it up in the morning and tried my best to put it down( had things to do) but still had to keep picking it back up. Telling myself just one more chapter.
The ending wasnt rushed like some authors seem to do.
I’m awaiting the next book 🙂
