The last epic journey before her life changes forever. Susanna Wilkins will do anything to make her father’s final dream come true, including trek along the path Lewis and Clark explored into the untamed wilds of the Rocky Mountains. Every mile is more crucial now that lung cancer is stealing Pa’s last days faster than she can come to terms with losing him. The journey becomes harder than she … journey becomes harder than she ever expected, but paddling upriver through fierce rapids and fighting hungry grizzlies isn’t what terrifies her the most.
Beaver Tail endured more than he can stand from the women in his Blackfoot camp, but the last disaster gave him the final shove he needed to join this band of brothers searching for one of their group who’s gone missing. The last thing he expected was to find a white woman and her sick father stranded at the base of a massive waterfall. His plan is to help them carry their oversize canoe and supplies, then leave them to their strange mission. Yet, the more he learns about the pair, the more he realizes his life is about to be derailed—again.
From a USA Today bestselling author comes another epic journey through breathless landscapes and adventure so intense, lives will never be the same.

I always love Misty M Beller novels. Historical, romance, authentic, with story lines that always grab my heart. The characters in this book soon won my heart, too. I love the way it takes me right into the heart of the Rocky Mountains in Montana. I loved traveling with these characters and seeing the mountains through their eyes.
I’ve always enjoyed books by Misty Beller but I must confess that this book is my favorite and I can’t wait to read more of the series. The author’s trademark descriptions of the wilderness and the mountains are still breath-taking and the harrowing trials in the wild still heart-pounding. The spiritual journey of Beaver Tail is raw, real, and heartfelt; the spiritual guidance and mentorship that Caleb and Mr. Wilkins provide is laced with love, gentleness, humility and respect. Mr. Wilkins, Susanna’s father, is a great example of a godly father, even with the terrible illness that makes him physically weak.
Beaver Tail is a tender-hearted, protective warrior with few words. Though he carries a burden from his past, he is still loyal to his band of brothers and remains honorable. He’s such a swoony hero! Susanna is a compassionate, brave, capable woman with a strong faith and determination. The emotions that run throughout the book are deep and there is a genuine undercurrent of grief that makes the characters very real and touchable. If you enjoy historical romance, you will love this book.
I received a copy of the book from the publisher/author via Celebrate Lit Tours and was under no obligation to post a positive review. All comments and opinions are solely my own.
Having read and enjoyed Ms. Beller’s Hearts of Montana series, I was excited to start her Call of the Rockies series. I was not disappointed! Through her signature rich descriptions and outstanding storytelling skill, Ms. Beller transports you to the wilds of the Great Plains in 1830 where you feel the story as you read it! This emotional story of adventure, romance, and faith is filled with poignant moments that bring tears and smiles. The characterization is beautiful with a hero and a heroine who are strong and endearing and a diverse cast of secondary characters who add depth and interest to the story. I look forward to seeing where life takes them next! I especially appreciate the strong faith element that flows naturally throughout the narrative. I recommend Freedom in the Mountain Wind as a must read for lovers of historical Christian fiction!
Misty is such an amazing author! I experienced so many emotions listening to this story and the tears I cried were the strongest proof of them!
Leonor did an incredible job narrating this story! I hope she is able to narrate the whole series!
Narrator Leonor A. Woodworth is one of my favorites. She makes the story come alive and I can feel the breeze and see the beautiful landscape. Likewise the author’s descriptions of the land, mountains and the water were so picturesque. Oh and the characters were so real for me that even I wanted to pray for Susanna’s father. Her love for her father and the way she wanted to give him every chance to see the beautiful mountains was amazing. She never thought of herself when it came to her father. Each of the characters had their own place in my heart as I could picture them so plainly. I don’t want to give anything away but lets just say Beaver Tail was so tough but yet so tender. Well I guess you can tell I loved this book.
I won this audiobook in a contest and was not required to write a review. All opinions are my own.
Do not know how anyone survived traveling West. Always fun to read the struggles.
Historical fiction, following Lewis and Clark trail. Strong female character.
Misty’s books are my favorite read.
I thought this book was great! The basic storyline starts with a dying father and his daughter trying to follow Lewis and Clark’s pathway, so that he could see the Rocky Mountains before he died. The characters were strong ones. The storyline was realistic and the book was clean…. A teenager could read it without issues. God was an underlying theme in the book.
I really didn’t want it to end …
It is a rare thing to find a book that is so impactful, so relevant to your own situation in life. This book was one such surprise for me! I connected with these characters and was able to relate to Susanna, in particular, on so many levels.
Author Misty M. Beller has a way with descriptive wording that just puts you right in the middle of another time and place and makes you want to stay there forever!
The struggles of the characters were as relevant to people of today’s age as they were to those of that time. I loved the adventure, the journey, the aspect of struggling with familial health issues and discovering how the characters were able to deal with that kind of a situation. Everything about this book felt so alive and real and I am ever so grateful that I had the opportunity to read and enjoy such an engrossing story!
This novel offers a bit of a different mountain adventure. I cannot imagine the strength and courage it took the main character, Susanna Wilkins, to travel with her father across the rugged wilderness following the path of Lewis and Clark just a couple decades after their historic journey. Not only do the Wilkins duo face a strenuous excursion, they end up doing it on their own at least part of the time. And, her father is dying from a serious lung disease. They encounter wild terrain, wild animals, and wild outdoorsmen, including Beaver Tail, a Blackfoot brave. Can they trust others to aid them? I found the story compelling and the characters intriguing. The author has a way of making readers feel like they’re right in the middle of the action. This is the start of a new series, but it does have some similarities with her past books as far as type of setting and dangers faced. If you like historical adventures, this is one you should enjoy. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.
I’m not quite sure if Misty Beller has lived in the great outdoors, but she sure can write about them. Every one of her books is full of adventure, surprise, romance, and angry wildlife! Beller packs a punch with Freedom in the Mountain Wind. Bears, otters and Indians, oh my!
Beller has once again been able to take me not only back in time, but in the wilderness as if it is in front of mine own eyes. It amazes me how I could almost feel myself fighting with that bear! That’s how good Beller is at drawing the reader into the story. You aren’t just reading, you are experiencing.
Susanna and Beaver Tail are such a great couple. Each strong and independent, and yet vulnerable and find that they work so much better together. Their chemistry was evident from the very beginning, and yet Beller took her time with their romance. I actually enjoyed the story more because of that. You got to see them fight their feelings, until one day it just kind of came out and there was no going back. (sigh)
Readers looking for an adventure with some romance are going to devour Beller’s latest release. I highly recommend!! I received a complimentary copy of this book. I was not required to write a favorable review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
What a wonderful start to another exciting series by Misty M. Beller. The author brings the story to life with her words, you can see all the scenery and feel all the emotions. Get ready for an epic wilderness adventure and a beautifully written love story that will keep you turning the pages.
Misty M. Beller has yet to disappoint me! I love how each of her books comes with a remarkable setting, and Freedom in the Mountain Wind is no different. The majestic country of the Rocky Mountains is painted beautifully and inspires the common thread of freedom throughout the story. I enjoyed retracing the steps of Louis and Clark with Susanna and Beaver Tail as they hiked around the falls of the Missouri river, wondered at the large herds of bison, and stared into the magnificent peaks of the Rocky Mountains. I love how you felt right beside them the entire journey.
Just like with other Misty M. Beller books, I fell in love with the characters right away. She has a way of creating such depth to her characters, and there is not a single exception in this book. Susanna is an amazing woman–so strong and full of love for others. I adored the relationship she had with her father and how they both yearned for adventure together.
Beaver Tail is a quiet man, but his heart speaks for itself. A protector. Loyal. Not to mention strong and handsome. He is a swoon-worthy hero, although his humble attitude and gentle nature may make him a little atypical. I loved following him and Susanna on their short journeys away from the camp when he would teach her about the land and its furry or scaly inhabitants. Their romance was so genuine and sigh-inducing. I just adored watching them grow closer throughout their journey.
The rest of their group–Joel, French and Caleb–were also well crafted and oh, so memorable. I can’t wait to get to know them all even more in future books! I’ll be waiting for the second book to release!
Freedom in the Mountain Wind is full of many journeys both physical and spiritual. It will tug at your heartstrings and make you yearn for a taste of the freedom the characters experience as they travel through a magnificent and dangerous wilderness.
Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone who loves Christian historical fiction, especially those stories set in the West.

Freedom in the mountain wind
Susanna is traveling with her sick father. They were in need of a travel guide. Beaver Tail happens to come along and ends up traveling with them. Beaver also has a couple of other guys with him. Susanna wasn’t sure about joining up with them.
The wilderness is made of wildlife and one of those is snakes. Susanna was really scare of them. I don’t blame her for that though. Susanna was the best caregiver for her father but also ends helping others.
I love reading historical books and the author does write some good ones. This is book one of a new series, I am looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
I received a complimentary copy of the book from the author through Celebrate Lit. This book review is my own opinion.
What I think you should know:
Freedom in the Mountain Wind is a historical Christian romance. It is the first book in the Call of the Rockies series by Misty M Beller. When Susanna and her Father start out on an epic adventure to follow Lewis and Clark’s travels they don’t expect to end up alone in the wilderness. After being abandoned in the wilderness by their guides Susanna is determined to continue their journey.
What you might want to know:
Susanna’s father is dying, the story includes him coughing up blood and symptoms of his illness.
What I think about:
I am a HUGE fan of Beller, I love her stories and how she is able to transport you back in time, I always feel like I am a part of her story and this one is no exception. The concept of the story is so unique, I wonder how many fathers would have been willing to take their daughter on such a journey. I loved how brave Susanna was and how willing she was to learn in order to not be a burden to Beaver Tail and his friends that help her along her journey. Beaver Tail was a great male lead, he brought a depth to the story and a natural way for Beller to weave in Faith. I really enjoyed the supporting characters and hope that we will see more of them in the rest of the series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Celebrate Lit, this in no way influenced my review. All opinions are my own.
My Thoughts on Freedom in the Mountain Wind:
I’ve read several books by Misty M Beller now, and I can say that they’re all fabulous. They may not make the hair on the back of my neck stand up in suspense, but they’re so good I can’t put them down. In fact, I now have a friend hooked on her books too! We’ve both read all the ones that are Kindle Unlimited so I was really excited to get a paperback of this one in the mail!
I love historical fiction. History has a special place in my life and I love to read and learn more. This book is amazing for that. Plus you’ve got some romance and a bit of danger and whew, it’s that good!
The romance is great. I loved the scenery descriptions. They made you feel like you were there. Of course, like with any good book, there are some hard things to get through and some of the characters need to grow and stretch. While they grow and stretch we fall more and more in love with them.
This is the first book in a new series and now I can’t wait to get to the next books! Hope they come out soon.

Freedom in the Mountain Wind reminds me of some of the television shows that I used to watch with my Daddy. It has a seriously ill father, the daughter who will do everything she can to fulfill his longing to see the Rockies, and the many obstacles they encounter as they travel to an unclaimed land. There are wild animals, uncertain weather, and unknown dangers, including the presence of Indians along the way. It is during this journey, however, that the Wilkinses meet Beaver Tail, the Blackfoot Indian who will forever change their lives.
I loved Beller’s description of this untamed land and she even included a beaver that seemed to travel along with the party and was named “He Who Is Brave”. Her characters are very realistic and lovable: Thad and Susanna Wilkins are good, decent people who know and love God and Beaver Tail is a good, decent man who doesn’t know their God. As he helps them on their journey, Beaver Tail is shown friendship and kindness and he begins to wonder about the faith that they both possess. This story isn’t just a journey to a new land, it is also a journey to a spiritual awakening.
Freedom in the Mountain Wind is a wonderful tale filled with faith and adventure. I thoroughly enjoyed it and recommend it to all who enjoy historical fiction and Christian romance.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author via NetGalley. I wasn’t obligated to write a positive review and these are my own thoughts and opinions.
While I was reading this book, I felt as if I were actually standing on a ledge in the Rocky Mountains and seeing the incredible view of mountains on every side of me and a river flowing in the valley below. Misty Beller does an incredible job of putting the reader right in the moment of the story. All the way through the book, the reader is pulled into the story of Susanna and her father and experiencing the journey with them.
Susanna’s dedication to and love for her father was touching. She was determined to honor his wish that he would see the Rocky Mountains before he died, and this is was, for me, the very heart of the book. The growing romance between Susanna and Beaver Tail was sweet, too. But the other thing that I loved was the godly influence that Susanna’s dad had on Beaver Tail. Beaver Tail began searching for God from the way that he saw Susanna’s dad live his life. I thought it was a reminder to all of us that it’s by our love for others that they see Jesus in us. I’m glad there’s another book to come to finish the story of their journey.
