The last epic journey before her life changes forever. Susanna Wilkins will do anything to make her father’s final dream come true, including trek along the path Lewis and Clark explored into the untamed wilds of the Rocky Mountains. Every mile is more crucial now that lung cancer is stealing Pa’s last days faster than she can come to terms with losing him. The journey becomes harder than she … journey becomes harder than she ever expected, but paddling upriver through fierce rapids and fighting hungry grizzlies isn’t what terrifies her the most.
Beaver Tail endured more than he can stand from the women in his Blackfoot camp, but the last disaster gave him the final shove he needed to join this band of brothers searching for one of their group who’s gone missing. The last thing he expected was to find a white woman and her sick father stranded at the base of a massive waterfall. His plan is to help them carry their oversize canoe and supplies, then leave them to their strange mission. Yet, the more he learns about the pair, the more he realizes his life is about to be derailed—again.
From a USA Today bestselling author comes another epic journey through breathless landscapes and adventure so intense, lives will never be the same.

Misty M. Beller just keeps writing better and better stories. I fell in love with Susanna and Beaver Tail. Susanna’s devotion to her father and getting him west to the mountains. What is there not to love about Beaver Tail, Caleb, French and Joel? Kind frontiersmen willing delay their journey to help Wilkins achieve his goal of getting to the mountains. The author gives us wonderful characters, story line and beautiful descriptions of the land. She has turned me into a reader of her descriptions of the land and environment. I can feel the cold, hear the waterfalls and see the magnificent mountains. I highly recommend this book.
This is an amazing story of courage and love. Susanna Wilkins has left her home with her ailing father to follow the trail of Lewis and Clark and allow her father to fulfill his dying dream of seeing the Rocky Mountains. Their trip has been plagued with hardships and setbacks and when she doesn’t think she can go on they are greeted by a man that seemed to appear from nowhere who takes it upon himself to help them.
Beaver Tail has left his home and is traveling with new friends in search of one of the mens brothers. He couldn’t stay in his village after what happened with his intended wife. He has sworn off women, that is until he meets Susanna and she calls to him like no other. He is determined to help her and her father to reach their destination.
This is such a great story and shows the love of a daughter to her father and what she was prepared to endure for him as well as the kindness of strangers that helped them along the way. It also gives us love that has grown between two unlikely people especially when neither thought they would ever find love. There are hardships this group has to endure as well as dangers they face along the way and heartache as well. This book is focused on Susanna and Beaver but it doesn’t end, it continues with their journey as well as the others and I can’t wait for the next book in this series.
I received an early copy to read and review and give my honest opinion. I loved everything about this book. I could feel for Susanna and her father and loved the other characters as well. I highly recommend this book.
Susanna is a very strong woman determined to give her father his last wish. This is one wonderful thing about this authors books…..the heroines are nicely strong women. Susanna does struggle but with God’s help, and that of a few mountain men and a half-breed, she manages to keep on moving. Very good book. Highly recommend.
I enjoyed the historical setting, but its my opinion the author imposed contemporary attitudes on the characters that were unlikely.
It’s was predictable
I absolutely loved it. Good reading just loafing around, we’ve had rain for days!
All historical fiction readers please pay attention. There is a new book out that you must read. This story is rich in history and adventure with land that only God could have made. The author is superb in making the story come to life and make you feel you are part of it. I loved reading how determined Susanna is in making her father’s dying wish come true. I worried that he would not make it as his health deteriorated. The terrain was rough and dangerous. I could here the bears off in the distance as they cried out to their cubs. I envisioned Susanna on her journey and she explores the land and hears the waterfall off in the distance. i love waterfalls and think they are soothing and a sign of God’s beauty.
Beaver Tail is an honorable man who stumbles upon Susanna and her father. It is clear they need help and I admired his strength and gentle spirit. The adventure really starts as they begin their long journey. At first he is not sure he wants to continue helping them but the more he is around Susanna the more he finds himself wanting to help. I really liked how the author took two people from different cultures and placed them together to show how everyone can get along. Susanna’s father shares his faith with Beaver Tail and I began to wonder if his heart would soften to God’s love. There is no lack of danger as they come upon snakes, bears and other animals in the forest.
The story is very clean and has a nice spiritual aspect that flows throughout the book. It details how people work together and perhaps find love along the way. Will Susanna’s father make it to his destination? Can Beaver Tail find happiness with Susanna? Don’t miss this exciting new series that is filled with a bit of danger and lives that are changed forever.
I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.
MY THOUGHTS ON THIS BOOK
I am so happy and honored that I could read and review the starting of this new series by Misty Beller. I love her books, and have read them all! In Freedom in the Mountain Wind, we follow Susanna Wilkins as she honors her Pa’s one last dream of exploring the wilds of the Rocky Mountains going the same route as Lewis and Clark. But would they be able to finish this fantastic but dangerous trip?
This was one of my favorite books that Ms. Beller has written. It is such a sweet and heartwarming story. The love between Susanna and her Pa runs so deep, it was a real pleasure reading the experience through the vivid descriptions. The characters in this story are such an amazing group, willing to help in every way, making them seem so realistic. Misty Beller does a phonomial job of researching the facts and then writing this story. The vivid descriptions of the exquisite scenes along the way makes this book one of the most colorful discriptive stories I’ve read. I’m not sure how I would survive in those wild Rocky Mountains, I’m not much for the wild animals and the food, but I would sure love to see the beautiful scenery. There is so much going on, so many emotions to deal with, so much work to be done to survive. And all of the guys were amazing, but Beaver Tail is my favorite. His knowledge of the land, his personality, sweet heart, all drew him to me more than the others. And I appreciate the way the author weaves in the Gospel, explains how to become a Christian, but does it in a subtle sweet way. If you enjoy a good clean, exciting, story within the wild Rocky Mountain trails, you will love this one!!
A copy of this book was given to me by the author or publisher. I am not required to write a positive review. The opinions here in this review are totally mine alone. I am disclosing this with my review in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255.
This is a must read book. Misty Beller always writes such good books, but this one is one of the best. The struggles that Susanna, her father, and Beaver Tail go through are written so well that you feel like you are right there with them. The landscape that Ms. Beller describes takes your breath away. I love Ms. Beller’s books, and this one is no exception. Follow along on the journey that Susanna and her father start and you’ll be hooked.
I haven’t read a book from this author that I haven’t loved! And this is the start of a new series The Call of the Rockies. I live in the Rockies and the mountains are amazing. So I have been trying to envision no freeways and good roads to get up there. I could never! So it is great to read of the adventures of Susanna Wilkins and her dying father as they make this last trek to fulfill her father’s last dream of following the trails of Lewis and Clark.
The danger are many, the adventure is high and the characters are endearing. (except for a few, of course!)
I couldn’t put this book down, such a great read! This is a good Christian book and full of emotions. Can’t wait to read the next book in the series!!
I received an ebook copy of this book from the author. All thoughts are my own.
