“A thoughtful and powerful page turner.”—PeopleElvis Cole is just a detective who can’t say no, especially to a girl in a terrible fix. And Jennifer Sheridan qualifies: Her fiancé, Mark Thurman, is a decorated LA cop with an elite plainclothes unit, but Jennifer’s sure he’s in trouble—the kind of serious trouble that only Elvis Cole can help him out of.Five minutes after his new client leaves his … minutes after his new client leaves his office, Elvis and his partner, the enigmatic Joe Pike, are hip-deep in a deadly situation as they plummet into a world of South Central gangs, corrupt cops, and conspiracies of silence. And before the case is through, every copy in the LAPD will be gunning for a pair of escaped armed-and-dangerous killers—Elvis Cole and Joe Pike.
“Elvis Cole provides more fun for the reader than any L.A. private eye to come along in years.”—Joseph Wambaugh

Good read. Like Elvis, love Pike.
Jennifer comes to Elvis for help. Her boyfriend, a decorated cop, is in trouble and won’t tell her what is wrong. She wants Elvis to find out what is wrong and fix it.
She gives him $40 and says she will pay him $40 a month for the next 49 months.
Elvis is a push over and accepts the job. Then, as usual, things get out of control.
I discovered Robert Crais last year and have read all of his books. If you like Michael Connelly and David Baldacci, you will also like Crais.
I LOVE this series!
Love this series!
Any Crais book is excellent. Elvis and Pike are great characters. If you are in to detective style books that have it all, Crais is for you.
I have loved all of his books, need to make a TV series, would be like Bosch. Easy to read with great characters, perfect for taking you away from everything for a while, keeps you going so great for the winter ahead.
Definitely a book to recommend. You will find yourself wishing for another 10 chapters as you realize you are reading the last in the book.I highly recommend this and all other books written by Robert Crais.
Robert Crais is by far my favorite author…even when he introduces a new character they just fit right in…I just went back and re read all the cole/pike books…love Maggie and Scott also….I wish he wrote faster….like at least 10 to 12 books a year would be nice!
Cole and Pike are on a par with Spenser and Hawk.
I first read this book in the early 1990s and have reread it since. It is the quintenessial Elvis Cole – Joe Pike story where they start from nothing and get to the end protecting their clients with fast-paced action and incredible insight guiding them.
Looking forward to reading more Crais!
I have loved all the books in this series. This one was not quite as good as the others, only because he did not have enough of Elvis and Joe together. I also saw this as his opportunity to make Joe just a little vulnerable, but he didn’t. Wait so long for these books, maybe we could clone Robert Crais.
I love the series, and this one doesn’t disappoint. Really good stuff.
Great read as udusl
Could not put it down. Memorable characters, fast moving action.
One of the better early ones showing the functioning of the partnership.
Great Author
Another great Cole and Pike adventure. Fast paced, as always.
Elvis Cole and Joe Pike are some of the most interesting characters in literature. Even the weird cat who hates everyone is fun. I love how realistic the story is, the descriptions of supporting characters and happens are so I can picture the scenes in my mind.
I thoroughly enjoy this series. Sympathetic characters and exciting, if a little bit predictable, plotting. I try not to miss any of these novels.
